DYC Presents Carpool Cinema

The Decatur Youth Council is hosting a free outdoor movie activity at Decatur Legacy Park on Saturday, April 24th. Admission begins at 7:00 p.m. Showtime is at dusk (around 8:20 p.m.)

We will be showing Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.

If you plan to attend the outdoor movie screening be advised that:

  • You must view the movie from your vehicle. Walk up viewing is not allowed at this activity to help us maintain a safe, socially distanced environment.
  • You must practice social distancing at all times if you exit the vehicle.
  • Parking spaces will be first come, first serve.
  • Portable restrooms will be available in a designated area of the park.
  • Concessions will not be available to purchase. Each ticket includes a snack bag for four with popcorn, water and candy.
  • Consider picking up dinner from a local restaurant to enjoy while you wait for the movie to begin.

Basketball Goals Reinstalled in Decatur Parks

The City of Decatur has reinstalled the basketball goals in all of its parks and opened the park restrooms as of Monday, April 5. The community is invited to shoot baskets while remembering to wear a mask, wash hands and remain socially distant. Please review the CDC guidelines related to sports cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/playing-sports.html. Reminder signs will be posted near the goals. Restrooms are scheduled to be cleaned twice a day on a regular basis. Please bring your own equipment and water.

Decatur Strategic Plan Update: Drafting the Vision

Decatur’s 2020 Strategic Planning process has reached a new milestone with a draft release of the Vision and Mission Statements that will frame its soon-to-be-released recommendations for the next ten years. Public review and comment is encouraged through Sunday, April 4.

Those discussions – both in person and online after the pandemic restrictions were in force – were designed to move from broad-ranging ideas to more focused topics. Key among the emerging themes were concern for addressing community affordability; racial equity and diversity; a full range of transportation options; and the challenges of climate change.

As the conversations progressed, the advantages of thinking comprehensively emerged. Since so many problems – housing affordability and equity, for instance – are interconnected, why not prioritize solutions that are interconnected, as well?

Over the next few months, City staff and the consulting team hired to help will draft strategies in keeping with the Vision and Mission Statements. With additional community check-ins along the way, a final draft Plan will be presented for public review this summer.

Next Steps for Decatur’s Recently Adopted Storm Water Master Plan

In December 2020, after two years of community engagement, the City Commission adopted a new Storm Water Master Plan Storm (SWMP). The plan is directed toward mitigating flooding, solving existing drainage problems, improving water quality and the quality of life in Decatur. According to the SWMP, $38 million is needed to implement high priority capital projects by 2040. 

The City has made major storm water infrastructure improvements in downtown Decatur over the past two decades. Infrastructure in most residential neighborhoods is generally more limited, older and not designed to modern standards. Ponding and flooding are observed in many of Decatur’s neighborhoods during significant storm events. 

The City Commission will consider the proposed storm water fee schedule at its regular meeting on Monday, March 1, 2021.

HOW WILL WE PAY FOR THIS?

Funding for storm water improvements can be raised equitably with an Equivalent Residential Unit (ERU) fee system for commercial and non-single family properties and a 4-tier fee system for residential properties, based on a property’s impervious area, as follows:

The proposed fee schedule is the SWMP‘s recommendation to generate funding needed to complete  proposed high priority projects over the next 20 years. 

The present fee of $100 per ERU was adopted in 2016 and will not provide the revenues to meet the infrastructure needs of Decatur’s aging storm water system. 

WHAT’S MY NEW STORM WATER FEE? 

Property owners can use this search tool determine their proposed storm water fee.  Credits are available for a portion of the fees by reducing run-off and saving tree canopy.

WHEN WILL I PAY THE NEW STORM WATER FEE?

The City Commission will consider the proposed storm water fee schedule at its regular meeting on Monday, March 1, 2021.  If approved, the new fee will be due on June 1, 2021.

2021 State of the City Address + State of the City Schools Online Event

Join us, Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. for the January meeting of the Decatur Business Association. The program will feature the 2021 State of the City Address presented by Decatur Mayor Patti Garrett. Tasha White, CSD Board Chair, will also provide the State of the City Schools address.

Reminder of MLK Holiday Sanitation Schedule

As we prepare to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18, this is a friendly neighborhood reminder of the holiday schedule for City of Decatur Solid Waste and Recycling Services: Regular services for Monday will be on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and regular services for Tuesday will be on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
