Happy Birthday Heliotrope!

heliotrope-1

I just received an email from Tommy, Marc and Jessica of Heliotrope announcing the store’s 2nd Anniversary party this Saturday,  Nov. 15 starting at 6 p.m. There will be a drawing at the door for discounts from 10-50% and a chance to win a $200 shopping spree. Also, they’ll be hosting local pianist and composer George Skaroulis, and Badda Bing is catering.

A party at Heliotrope sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday evening, so stop by and wish the gang a happy birthday!

Make sure to check out the Emergency Management supplement in this month’s Decatur Focus. Its packed with all sorts of information on ways to get prepared and potential threats to the City. There’s even a clip and save page to help you and yours create a family emergency plan.

I am very much looking forward to shopping this evening at Terrific Thursdays in Decatur. I have already been doing some window shopping in anticipation. By Hand South is having their holiday open house, the one opportunity all year to get a discount on the wonderful, one of a kind jewelry that I love. Be sure to stop by to get yourself a gift, as well as to see the wonderful decorations.

Melrose on Ponce has a lot of holiday decor which will make you want to rush home to decorate. In the front room, is the Gingerbread House and one of the back rooms is in the “White Christmas” theme. There are a lot of nice decorations for you to take home at various price points.

I am in the habit of looking for a new purse, whether I need one or not, and spied a few options this morning. Salon Red on Ponce de Leon had some big purses displayed outside the store, and Squash Blossom has a wonderfully tempting window display. I will also  wander down to Kaleidoscope and Boogaloos before making up my mind.

Catherine and I will be out and about this evening and we hope you join us in supporting the local businesses!

The City is installing an improved pedestrian crosswalk on E. Ponce de Leon near Starbucks.  This new design should improve visibility of the crosswalk and help slow traffic.  We want to test this new design in this location before we consider expanding it to other pedestrians crosswalk areas in the City.  In an effort to limit disruption of businesses in the area, the installation will begin on Sunday evening November 9th around 7 p.m. and be completed before the start of rush hour traffic on Monday morning.  A section of E. Ponce de Leon Avenue from East Court Square east to Church Street will be closed overnight to allow the installation to be completed in one evening.  East Court Square will remain open to traffic but traffic exiting from East Court Square will only be allowed to turn left onto Ponce de Leon.  Work will be completed and the closed section of E. Ponce de Leon reopened to traffic by early Monday morning.

Halloween has come and gone (as well as an historical presidential election), which can only mean one thing…the holiday shopping season is upon us! I know most of you dread holiday shopping – the crowded malls, rows of aisles filled with the same old stuff, fighting for this season’s “it” toy, endless evenings of gift wrapping…

Luckily for us there’s Decatur’s Terrific Thursdays. Every Thursday in November and December (except for Thanksgiving) participating shops and restaurants stay open late, offer discounts, complimentary beverages and other holiday treats. It all starts this Thursday, Nov. 6. So, good-bye hectic, impersonal mall shopping and hello leisurely shopping for unique gifts while sipping wine and hot chocolate.

For a list of this year’s participants and discount details, visit the city’s Terrific Thursday webpage.

One of Georgia's Best

Make sure to check out the November edition of GeorgiaTrend magazine. The City of Decatur has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Georgia for 2008. Function, a marketing and design firm in the City, also made the roster.

Now everyone can know that Decatur is not just a great place to live, it’s also a great place to work!

Happy Halloween!

Have a safe and happy Halloween.

The first ever Decatur Old House Fair was a great success.  Nearly 200 people showed up to learn about their old houses and meet folks who can help them fix those old houses!  Ed Daugherty’s Historic Landscape lectures was so popular we had to break it up after it ran overtime by 20 minutes.  We love Ed!  The wood window restoration workshop was a big hit and our expert window craftsman, Tom Bretherton, may actually be taller than Mayor Floyd!

The award for the most clever exhibitor give-a-way goes to Jim Sabol at Plumbworks.  They gave away “Joe the Plumber” dolls to our happy participants.  No word on whether the “Joe the Plumber” doll was voting for Obama or McCain.

The most creative candy display award goes to the daughters of M. Cary and Daughters Plumbing Contractors. Not many people would offer people free candy in a low flush toilet. Yum-o!

Has anyone paid for parking on N. McDonough and E. Court Square using their cell phone yet? As mentioned in a previous post, starting this week you have the option of paying the meters on the square with your cell phone. Click on the link below to read more about the system. For those of you who have tried it already, let us know what you think!

There seems to be a misperception that shopping in Decatur is expensive and only for the young and trendy.  My husband is hardly the type of guy to get his clothes from a boutique.  He dropped out of the corporate scene years ago because he didn’t want to spend his days in a coat and tie.  Give him a pair of Royal Robbins shorts, a Columbia shirt and a pair of Merrells and he’s covered (literally) seven days a week, twelve months a year.  Everything he needs can be found at Whit’s End in Decatur.  Ok, when it gets really cold, he’ll add socks and a Columbia fleece but Whit’s End has this covered too.   Yes, we can go to REI or Bass Pro to clothe him but Jeff and Greg will order anything that we need.  And, trust me their prices are very competitive.

My 20 something daughters are picky shoppers but can always find the perfect dress at Boogaloo or Kaleidiscope.  Sure, they have some pricey ones but there are plenty that cost less than the offerings at the mall.  We can support Decatur and know that 10 other young women won’t be wearing the same dress.  In fact, when my daughter was looking for a small purse for prom a few years back, we decided to try Decatur and found several good options at Mingei World Arts and at Boutique Karma.  The one we ended up buying was probably half what we would have paid at the mall.

As for me, Squash Blossom and Boutique Karma are the best for the kind of casual wear I prefer.  I like the fact that they’ll pull together entire outfits.  Ask local real estate agent Emilie Markert, who as my mom would say always looks very “put together,” where she got her outfit and I’ll bet it came from Boutique Karma.  So I encourage you to take the time to try shopping in Decatur.  Don’t assume that prices are high because a shop is small.  Take a day to discover the great retail options in Decatur, enjoy the friendly service while you save gas and support our local economy.
