leeland-books Don’t get too excited, it is not a new bookstore in Decatur, Leeland Books is part of the set of the filming of Halloween 2. The inside shots will be at the Wordsmith’s Books location and exterior shots will be in front of Leeland Books. I am quite impressed with the amount of detail put into the store front.

For those of us who thought Hollywood was glamorous, I have been persuaded otherwise after seeing the amount of work the crew has put into the filming of this scene. They have been working all hours of the day and night to get ready. It reminds me of getting prepared for a special event.

The crew will be moving to the Decatur Cemetery for some night shots this evening. They have made a donation to the Friends of the Cemetery to help to restore the old section of the cemetery. This filming does benefit our city in many ways!

Filming at the Old Courthouse on the Square

You may have noticed the tents and other equipment around the Old Courthouse on the Square today. A crew from FTP Productions is filming a pilot for ABC; “The Untitled Daniel Cerone Project”. According to www.hollywoodreporter.com,

“The Cerone project, from ABC Studios, centers on a low-level detective (Jimmy Wolk) whose genius 11-year-old brother (Goyo) helps him solve crimes. “

Halloween 2 ( H2 ) will be filming at the Wordsmith’s location tomorrow and in the cemetery tomorrow night. Maybe there will be a Malcolm McDowell sighting; let me know if you see him!

Cornerstone Bank Opens with Ribbon Cutting

Cornerstone Bank Ribbon Cutting

Cornerstone Bank opened its doors this morning with a “Ribbon Cutting” held at their new Decatur location in Decatur Two Town Center . President Charles Yorke welcomed the attendees and expressed his happiness at being a part of Decatur. Also on hand for the ceremony were DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis and Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd, who welcomed Cornerstone Bank to Decatur.

The bank is tastefully decorated and welcoming. They have a large community room that they are offering to the community. Great place to hold meetings and workshops.

Celebrate St. Patty's Day at The Grange

Come out to The Grange this Saturday in honor of St. Patty’s Day. The city of Savannah might dye its river green, but Decatur has a pub owned by real Irish people! That’s right. For those of you who didn’t know, The Grange Public House is owned by the Comers who were born and raised in Ireland.

Halloween 2 aka H2 Filming in Decatur Next Week

Halloween 2 aka H2 will be filming in the City of Decatur on Saint Patrick’s Day. The movie is directed by Rob Zombie, who did the remake of Halloween and features Scout Taylor, Tyler Mane and Malcolm McDowell.

First Zombieland, and now H2!

On another note, ABC will be filming a pilot at the Old Courthouse on the Square next week also. I think it is quite exciting to have all of this filming going on in our great little city.

"Turn Out" for Earth Hour, March 28

Earth Hour is approaching and I am encouraging everyone to sign up to participate. “What is Earth Hour?” you may ask. According to the organizers, the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour is “a global event created to symbolize that each one of us, working together, can make a positive impact on climate change.”

March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm tens of millions of people in hundreds of cities around the world will come together once again to make a bold statement about their concern about climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in the fight against climate change.

The City of Decatur has signed up to participate and will turn off lights on the MARTA Plaza as well as non-essential lighting in city buildings. You too can sign up as a school, organization, or individual by visiting www.earthhourUS.org. The site also has some fun activites for children, teachers and families. There is a Memory Game that helps children understand how they can make a difference, a Geo-Bee, and more. Also on the site are ways that families can learn to reduce their carbon footprint and increae energy efficiency at home and at school.

Time Change: Touch a Truck Day

Touch a Truck Day is coming up the weekend after next, so make sure to mark your calendars. The event has been moved from 10 a.m. to noon and will run until 3 p.m. Kids and grownups are invited to see and touch a variety of hard-working city vehicles. Come and check out a fire truck, dump trucks, tractors, police cars and sanitation vehincles. The event is free and open to the community. Chick-fil-A will have lunch on site for purchase.

The Seen Gallery Re-opens on Church Street

The weather was great in Decatur this past weekend and crowds of people joined Bill and Amy at The Seen Gallery to celebrate their “Grand Re-opening” party. The gallery moved to Church Street in downtown Decatur next to Mingie World Arts and Java Monkey. Several of the artists represented attended and seemed excited about the new space.

Bill and Amy have done a great job of displaying the artwork and seemed very excited about the space. Bill mentioned that they would be cexpanding their hours to include more time during the day, so be sure to stop by, say hello, and support your local artists!

Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson Honored at "Salute to Civil Rights Leaders"

Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson was honored on Thurday, February 26 at “A Salute to Civil Rights Leaders” held at the Old Courthouse on the Square. The event, put on by the Dekalb History Center, honored Ms. Wilson, along with Thurbert E. Baker, Dr. Eugene Walker, and the Reverand Hosea and Mrs. Juanita Williams. Commissioner Michael Thurmond presented the awards.

Ms. Wilson, who came to Decatur in 1949, has always been a civil rights activist in Decatur and has distinguished herself in community service. Mayor Wilson founded the Oakhurst Community Health Center in South Decatur and also served as Executive Director. In 1984 Ms. Wilson became the first African-Amercian to serve on the Decatur City Commission and in 1992 was elected by the commission as Mayor Pro-Tem; in 1993 she became Mayor, serving until 1998.

Elizabeth Wilson has been an integral part of the Decatur community, and remains active today. In 2008, Agnes Scott College honored her with a Doctor of Laws degree. Ms. Wilson considers herself retired, but her community involvement continues unabated.
