Kelly from Renewal has sent in the following information. Congratulations to Renewal!

Decatur’s Historic Preservation Commission presented the annual Decatur Design Awards on May 3rd at the Old Decatur Courthouse. These awards recognize projects that preserve, enhance and contribute to the historic character of the City. Recipients were given a certificate signed by Mayor Bill Floyd, as well as an honorary plaque.  Renewal Design-Build received an award for Best Addition.

The judging commissioners thought the scale of the winning project – a major two story addition – was very compatible to the adjacent properties, and that incorporating sustainable materials also added a great deal of value. According to Regina Brewer, the awards’ organizer, “They also felt you could discern that the addition was new, and that it did not create a false sense of history.”

Once a small home in disrepair, this completely remodeled home is now a Tudor style cottage with double the square footage. And, the homeowner of the winning project couldn’t be more pleased. “My home is beautiful; it’s my dream come true,” says Dr. Dallin Randolph.

The Renewal team is humbled by such an award. “It is such an honor to be recognized by the City to whom we owe so much of our success,” says Renewal CEO, Peter Michelson. “Our goal is to continually contribute to the beauty and character of Decatur.”

Renewal Design-Build, 124 S. Columbia Dr., Decatur, is an award-winning firm providing complete solutions for renovations, additions, kitchens, baths, small projects and repairs.  For information, call 404.378.6962, or visit www.RenewalDesignBuild.com.

greenweedkiller

City of Decatur facilities maintenance superintendent, Felix Floyd, impressed us all when he told us about the eco-friendly herbicide he mixed together to use on the MARTA plaza. Some of you might already know about this recipe, but for those of you who don’t, here’s how you can make your own chemical-free weed killer:

  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1/8 cup dish soap

Of course the MARTA plaza needs more than one little spray bottle of weed killer, so Felix makes his in bulk. He estimates that for every gallon of vinegar, he adds 2 cups of salt and 1 cup of soap. It takes a couple of applications for the stuff to work, but I’m sure the plaza will be weed-free (and chemical-free) by Decatur Arts Festival weekend.

It looks like the rain is going to hold off until this afternoon so that means the first Blue Sky Concert of 2009 is still on! Bring your lunch to the square at noon and enjoy the music of Leslie Dysinger.

For more information about the May concert series visit the Decatur Business Association’s events webpage.

The 21st annual Decatur Arts Festival poster will be unveiled this coming Thursday evening at the Old Courthouse on the Square from 5 until 7 pm. This year’s poster was designed by Decatur artist Judy AS. O. Lynn. Judy, whose business is called Mirabelle Studio, is influenced by nature, her surroundings and her personal perceptions of life. Judy’s work can be found at local at festivals, regional galleries and in Europe. She has been making books, decorative boxes and block prints ince 1991.

I look forward to seeing this years’ poster and I hope you will join us at the Old Courthouse on the Square. See you Thursday!

In accordance with the City of Decatur’s Emergency Response Plan, the City’s Emergency Management Team continues to monitor the information related to the outbreak caused by a new influenza virus, H1N1, of swine and avian origin.  Decatur residents are urged to take the preventative precautions recommended by the CDC including:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.  Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.  Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • If someone is ill and has recently traveled to an area affected by swine flu or has been in contact with someone who has been infected with swine flu, have them contact their health care provider immediately.

For more details about swine flu, go to  http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/swineflu_you.htm

If the situation changes, we will post updates as necessary on the website at www.decaturga.com, on the blog at www.thedecaturminute.com.  Important updates will also be distributed through Twitter for those who follow DowntownDecatur.

Okay Decatur!

The consultants have finished the photo survey portion of the Historic Resource Survey.  I thought I’d share some photos of what they discovered.

They say that every man or woman’s home is their castle.  These lucky folks are livin’ the dream.

Okay, this has to be one of the nicest mailboxes I’ve ever seen.  No, we’re not counting it in our inventory, but it was too cool not to take a picture of it.

Zip Trip to Decatur

Better Mornings Atlanta is hitting the road…they are going on a zip trip…looking for some of the most interesting zip codes in metro Atlanta. On Thursday, April 30 BMA and Corinna Allen will be live in Decatur from 5 – 7 a.m. Yes, I said 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. (that’s morning for all you late-night folks).

They are showcasing everything that makes our community a great place to live, work and play. They are spotlighting our businesses, shops, restaurants, events, and people, throwing in a bit of history and asking people what they love about our community.

How hip is our zip? Let’s show Better Mornings Atlanta by turning out from 5 – 7 a.m. at Parker’s on Ponce, 116 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., and showing our community spirit. The more the merrier. We’ll have free coffee, soft drinks and bagels (maybe even some Watershed cookies & pimento cheese – yum) to wake you up – plus the Rain Barrel Man, an Asian Cajun fashion show, and more. Please join us in showcasing our fabulous community – we need you.

See you Thursday morning!
