Iberian Pig Logo w outlineWalking back from lunch today we noticed some “action” in the old Sage Restaurant space could not resist peeking in to see what was going on. We had the pleasure of meeting Nancy Castellucci. Nancy and her family will be opening a new restaurant, The Iberian Pig, in the space. The Castellucci Family owns Sugo, which is located in three sites around Atlanta, and are very excited to be expanding to Decatur with a new concept.  The Family has been in the restaurant business for a couple of generations.

The Iberian Pig will feature slow roasted pork as well as a plethora of other items. They are busily creating a new menu for the restaurant and I, for one, look forward to dining there.  One of their sons is a somelier, so the wine list will be awesome as well.  (Of course we had to to ask about the wine! ) They hope to be open by the end of August. If interested, you can visit their website to find more information www.sugorestaurant.com.

Welcome to Decatur Castelluccis!!

rec monRound up your children and head over to the Decatur Library on Thursday, July 16 to hear “Recess Monkey”, a show for children of all ages. “Recess Monkey” weaves puns, jokes, stories and shenanigans into their kid-inspired songs.  No play on words is too much of a stretch, and no rhyme schemes are out of bounds for their genre- bending set of catchy, singable and dance-able ditties that NPR called “inventive, brilliant, multilayered” and Cookie magazine called “fast paced and goofy.”  The band is exceptional because the band actually has children help compose, record, and design their CDs.

The show begins at 7 pm.

Are you at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma?  Would people describe you as energetic, enthusiastic, and having a passion for working with children?  If so, you might be the perfect candidate to work as a counselor in Decatur’s After School Program.  The 2:15 – 6:15 p.m. hours leave you time to pursue your college degree while giving you the opportunity to hone your education and experience working with children.  And, you can get paid for being a positive role model for children while building your resume at the same time.

Decatur’s After School Program is nationally known and consistently receives accolades and awards.  My daughter, who is now a middle school teacher, learned some of her best tricks of the trade under the tutelage of the dedicated staff during her tenure as a part-time counselor years ago.  Plus, she had a great time with the kids!

But, you don’t have to be a college student to apply.  You might be a retired educator who misses hands-on time with children.  Or, you might be someone who likes being with kids and has experience dealing with groups such as girl scouts or soccer or anything related to activities with children.  You might even be looking to change careers and want to see what it is like working with children.  The possibilities are endless.

I didn’t even mention the advantage of  part time employment close to home.  If you are interested, check out the job description and requirements on the City of Decatur website to see if you might qualify.  But hurry, the program begins August 5.

cemeteryYou are invited to the Second Sunday Strolls this Sunday, July 12, at 2:30 p.m. in Decatur Cemetery.  This 30-45 minute historic walk is led by volunteer and Cemetery expert Cathy Vogel.  Whether this is your first visit or your 30th, you’ll learn something you didn’t know about metro Atlanta’s oldest public burial space.  Meet at the well house gazebo off of Commerce Drive.

There is quite a bit of history and interesting sites at the Cemetery, so grab your walking shoes and join the stroll!

If you can’t make this Sunday’s walk, the remaining dates for 2009 are August 9, September 13, and October 11.

Sponsored by the Friends of Decatur Cemetery, a project of the Decatur Preservation Alliance.

Watching the Atlanta Dream

Watching the Atlanta Dream

The FitTeens Foundation of Metro Atlanta and the Atlanta’s WNBA Dream aligned for not only a win over the Detroit shock, but also a win for several teens and the fitness programs for their respective schools.

On Friday, June 26th, several teenagers attended their first professional WNBA basketball game at Phillips Arena, thanks to a great partnership with the Atlanta Dream. The Dream pulled out an impressive 96 to 86 win over Detroit and a portion of specific ticket sales went to the FitWit Foundation.

The FitWit Foundation is a 501c (3) that empowers young people to live healthier and successful lives. The Foundation provides free fitness and nutritional programs to metro area high schools, where the largest increase in diabetes and obesity is taking place. Teens from both Maynard Jackson High and Decatur City High attended the game and an autograph session after the game to meet the players up close and personal.

For more information about FitTeens please contact thefitwitfoundtion.org or michelle@fitwit.com.

One of the fun things that I get to do in my position as Special Events Coordinator is to go “behind the scenes” to watch and learn how things are done. So, just in case you are wondering about the set up for a fireworks display, here are some photos from “behind the scenes”!
First, Drew Strauss and his crew bring the fireworks to the top of the Dekalb County deck:

Here members of the “crew” pack the shells that will be used for the Grand Finale. Notice how they are tied together to give the “finale effect”.

Firefighters are on top of the deck to ensure the safety of the crew as well as the buildings around the deck. Hoses and firefighters are ready to go into action.

The “Grand Finale” going off is always exciting!

After the show is over, the “shooters” walk the perimeter of the deck to the cheers of their “fans”.

Much thanks to our wonderful pyrotechnics crew for putting on a safe display and to our wonderful Firefighters for ensuring the safety of our citizens. Putting on the 4th of July is a collaboration of Special Events with the Police and Fire Department. Thanks to everyone for a great holiday!

Not like you ever need an excuse to stop by The Cookie Studio, but it will stay open one whole hour later tomorrow evening. That means you can stock up on delicious cookies, cupcakes and cookie bars for the holiday weekend any time between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. tomorrow. So even if you don’t get Friday off, you can still make it over to The Cookie Studio for a sweet treat after work.
