It is time to announce the winners of Decorate Decatur for 2009! Thanks to all who have decorated their homes for the holidays. The judges enjoyed viewing all the lights and festival decorations. If you are looking for a fun way to spend an evening then walk, bike or ride to see the winners. Might be a good time for those out of town guests looking for fun, free entertainment! Some photos are included below, but these homes really show off their decor at night when the lights are shining.

205 Adair Street

The winner of the coveted “Commissioner’s Cup” is Nancy Wilkinson & Susan Phillips at 205 Adair Street.

This raucous display always fills up the home’s front yard. New this year is a “snow packing” center complete with a train (with working smoke stack) to haul the crates of snow. Judging by some green-clad kicking legs sticking out from under a crate, an elf appears to have had a workers safety mishap. Good thing elves are magical! Other features include a lighted bike, a snowman in box, a waving Santa and a working railroad crossing sign. The judges note that the decorations are beginning to migrate to nearby yards as evidenced by the lighted cow cutout that graces the facade of the across-the-street neighbor’s home. Indications are promising for next year’s exuberant holiday displays.

The  following were winners of Decorate Decatur and received signage in their yards.

142 Adair Street: What is it about Adair Street? The folks there are always cooking up something new for the holidays, and this year is no different. You’ll want to walk or drive by twice to get both messages on the “Burma Shave” signs that accompany the tight-rope walking snowman.

122 Woodlawn Avenue: An extensive holiday menagerie fills the large front yard of this home and extends to the side yard in a dazzling display of lights. You could even say it glows.

107 2nd Avenue:  Two giant inflatable nutcrackers guard the gift-wrapped front entrance of this bungalow, accented by the plentiful lights that illuminate its small front yard near busy East Lake Drive.

112 Paden Circle: The colorful lights on the facade and the front yard of this house are like a holiday beacon welcoming drivers and passersby on the way in to Oakhurst.

211 Willow Lane: This home has a generous lot with a gracious plenty of lights festooned across the many shrubs and ornamental trees. The display extends to the back of the home. The judges found the visual effect to be quite dazzling, especially when approached from Church Street.

Happy Huladays!!

302 Ponce de Leon Place: Happy Huladays! The more you look, the more you see in this hula-themed display. There are lights galore, lit Hawaiian versions of Season’s Greetings, a jolly inflatable snowman wearing a hula skirt, and so much more. The judges are careful to point out the team of pink flamingos pulling a sleigh.

151 Superior Avenue: These homeowners did not miss an inch of roofline — in front or out back — when they put up their lights. The house and garage are outlined in string lights accented by garland around the front door and porch. An inflatable polar bear with purple sweater presides over this  holiday presentation.

252 Kings Highway: It’s impossible to miss the giant full moon planted on this front lawn with Santa and his sleigh zooming across the expanse. But that’s not all there is to see! Lights and other decorations round out the tableau. Be sure to roll down your window or take out your earbuds to hear the holiday music playing.

428 Sycamore Street: This grand historic home is picture perfect, beautifully decorated with greenery, ribbon and lights, with every detail covered including delightful “house” luminaries lining the front stone wall.

There were several businesses that contributed to the Decatur holiday spirit and the judges wanted to mention them as well.

Steinbecks and U-Joint: Festive lights at these two anchor businesses contribute to the holiday bustle, welcoming patrons in need of refreshment during holiday preparations or a cozy place to celebrate the season.

Little Shop of Stories: The return of the beloved downtown Decatur Christmas tree is a special gift enthusiastically welcomed by the community.

Best Streetscape Experience – Shops on West Ponce: Passersby on W. Ponce de Leon Avenue are beckoned by the glittering white lights that fill the row of trees in front of the Shops of West Ponce Place. Just around the corner along the main thoroughfare, festive holiday decorations in the windows of Cakes & Ale, Kaleidoscope, Heliotrope, and Boogaloos Boutique are a visual treat for shoppers and strollers.

Neighborhoods that went all out:

Lamont/Vidal: Best overall neighborhood presentation with luminaria lighting the way along the rolling streets, and many houses harmoniously dressed up in beautiful white lights and garland.

Ridgeland Avenue: Delightful cluster of homes decked out in a right neighborly display of colorful lights.

Special Mention! The judges want to recognize the City of Decatur for the new LED string lights covering the ornamental streetscape trees around the MARTA Plaza and anchoring the ends of E. Court Square and N. McDonough Street, as well as the lit garland on City Hall and the lighted bandstand.

The outdoor severe weather sirens are now installed and it’s time to make sure that everything is working properly.  Starting December 28, you will hear the sirens going off from time to time. The installation testing will not occur on inclement weather days, same as for when the sirens will actually be in use. The testing period will conclude on January 15, 2010.

Building the Fire Pit

Grounds Crew Building the Fire Pit

A BIG thank you goes out to Public Works for building the fire pit to be used at the Bonfire & Marshmallow Roast tomorrow night. Gerry Knotts and his crew were out on the Square today in preparation for the event. Join us tomorrow night from 7 until 8 pm to roast some marshmallows. Firefighters will be on hand to tend the fire and Santa will be there to visit with the children.

Charlie Stiggers keeps an eye on the workers!

Both Greene’s Fine Foods and Decatur CD are hosting great events today.

The Dutchess and The Duke are performing in one of Decatur CD’s epic in-store concerts this evening at 5 p.m. tonight. The details are on this poster:

Then head over to Greene’s  for National Chocolate Covered Anything Day! Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Greene’s invites everyone to bring in one item smaller than an apple and they will chocolate cover it for you! The best idea I’ve heard so far is bringing in a piece of bacon – yum!

Greene’s Fine Foods

The Whiz Biz is having their Grand Opening tonight from 6:00pm-6:30pm at Glennwood Academy prior to Glennwood’s winter concert which starts at 7pm.  They will be selling items from their sustainable product line, including bags, purses, pillows, and jewelry.  I’ve seen a few samples, and they are very cool.  They have a bag made from a Doritos bag!  The plastic is ironed between wax paper, and then sewn together.  Who knew?

Example bag from the Whiz Biz sustainable products line. So cute!

The Whiz Biz (short for ‘Whiz Business’) started out of a 4th/5th grade afterschool program called Whiz Kids, which awards kids with Accountability Bucks for doing the right thing.  The program  operates a bank, a post office, and a kid-run Whiz Kids Store.

The store operators were not satisfied with the store structure because they realized the store was not offering a chance to earn any profit.  The children decided they wanted to create their own business with their own sustainable product line.  They developed a business plan, and decided that all the profits would be donated to Invisible Children, a charity which supports children affected by war in Uganda.

If you can’t make it for that narrow window tonight NEVER FEAR!  Whiz Biz has many other wonderful things planned in the coming months and there will be ample opportunity to visit them at the program.  I will keep you posted.

You remember when we mentioned that Andrea Berry of eLife Magazine was putting together a community holiday card? Well, the final product is here! We love everyone’s submissions. See if you can spot some City of Decatur employees.

A big thank you to Andrea for putting this all together!

Storefront Art

The Decatur Arts Alliance is making great use of the window space left behind when By Hand South owner Brenda Leder retired. The window has become “Decatur Street Gallery” showcasing the work of local artist Gail Vogels. Glad to see that this wonderful window has become part of the street scene on Ponce.

Artists interested in an opportunity to have their work displayed should contact Executive Director Angie Macon at 404-371-9583.  Kudos to the Arts Alliance for their efforts to support local artists! Consider joining the organization and getting involved.

Decatur Street Gallery

The annual Bonfire & Marshmallow Roast will be held this Thursday, December 17 from 7 until 8 pm on the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur. Santa will there to join in the fun. The event is free thanks to the Decatur Business Association and sponsoring businesses.

Decatur’s fire fighters will be there to light and tend the fire. The fire will be extinguished at 8 pm using reclaimed water from the Holiday Inn. This is usually a highlight for the children as it produces lots of steam.

This Thursday will also be your last chance to participate in Decatur’s Terrific Thursdays. Shops offer treats and special discounts. Why not make it a night out in Decatur? Have dinner, eat roasted marshmallows for dessert and shop for those one of a kind gifts. Oh yeah- visit with Santa too. Something for everyone in the family!

You may have noticed that the tornado outdoor warning sirens are being installed around the City. These sirens will be sounded to alert citizens who are outdoors that a tornado may be imminent. However, they are not designed to be heard within a home or other building that has been built to today’s construction standards.

There is a siren for each quadrant of the City. In addition to the one located on Agnes Scott’s campus, the others are located at Westchester, Oakhurst Elementary, Winnona Park Elementary, and Glennwood Academy. In the event that the National Weather Services issues a tornado warning for the Decatur area, the Decatur Police Communications Center will sound the siren for three to five minutes per issued warning. During the sounding, the siren head will rotate.

The City will conduct a test of the system at 3 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. If the weather is inclement on the first Wednesday of the month, the test will be postponed until the following day, the first Thursday of the month.

A test of the new siren system will take place once all of the sirens are installed. The installation testing schedule is still pending but as soon as we know, we’ll let you know. If you have any questions about the tornado outdoor warning sirens, please contact Assistant City Manager Tony Parker at 404-370-4102.
