Patti Garrett officially joined the ranks of the Decatur City Commission when she was sworn in at the first meeting in January, 2010.  Patti was elected to a four-year term and replaced Mary Alice Kemp who did not run for re-election.  Patti is pictured immediately after the swearing in when she took her place at the table.  Within minutes she was seconding motions!

Commissioner Fred Boykin was also elected to his 3rd four-year term and was sworn in by City Attorney Bryan Downs.  Fred owns Bicycle South and is active in the Safe Routes to School Program.  He begins his 9th year as a City Commissioner.

Bill Floyd was re-elected to his position as Mayor and Jim Baskett as Mayor-Pro Tem.  The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are elected by their fellow Commissioners for one year.  The City Commission renewed the contract for Peggy Merriss, City Manager.  Peggy has served the City since 1983 and has been City Manager since 1993.  Peggy is pictured with Mayor Bill Floyd.

Walking To School In Decatur

Yes, we know we are a healthy community striving to become more and more healthy through our active life style. Now everyone can read about the planning that got us here.  As part of its nationwide efforts to reduce childhood obesity the International City/County Management Associate (ICMA) developed a case study about the City of Decatur’s efforts to encourage active living. Click here to read all about it. I promise you will find it interesting!

The Decatur City Commission presented the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Project with a special Hometown Hero Award.  The project connects the community to the health, safety, and well-being of Decatur’s senior citizens, while literally building value in the neighborhood.

The project began as a partnership between the City of Decatur and the Decatur Preservation Alliance (DPA) in 2003 as a half-day project on Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday with a little over 100 volunteers doing home repairs and yard work at 8 senior citizens’ homes.  The DPA board initiated the project in order to help fixed- and low-income senior citizens who were unable to maintain their homes.  DPA board member Robert Soens, Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson, and Volunteer Decatur Coordinator Lee Ann Harvey planned the first project.

Today the MLK Service Project is a 3-day weekend and in 2009, over 1,000 volunteers participated making significant repairs on 14 homes and doing yard work on an additional 18 homes.

Pictured after receiving the special award are Robert Soens, Elizabeth Wilson, Lee Ann Harvey, and Susan Cobleigh.

What's Coming Up?

Being the event planner for the City of Decatur brings the same question from people I run into: “What’s coming up next?”. Since it is January and (to quote Bing Crosby) the weather outside is frightful, or at least very cold to us Southerners, there are no big events scheduled on the Square for a while. However, there ARE things to do in Decatur!

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love will be speaking at Agnes Scott College at Presser Hall on Monday, January 11 at 7 pm. She has written a new book, Committed, A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage in which the author, who had sworn off marriage, searches for its  true meaning and chronicles her journey.  I look forward to not only attending, but to buying and reading the new book. For more information, click here.

On Thursday, January 14th, Elise Witt and the Mezzanine Band will be playing at the Decatur Library Auditorium located at 215 Sycamore Street in Decatur. The free show begins at 7 pm, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. From Karen Skellie at the Library: “Elize Witt is a performer to remember with international savvy & personal charm. A concert with Elise takes listeners on a glorious and rollicking journey, visiting lands of gypsy jazz, smoky cabarets and funky swing.”

Decatur encourages community interaction and tries to maximize communication among residents, businesses, and government.  In January, 2010 Decatur will launch its third blog – The Decatur Tax Blog.

The Decatur Tax Blog joins The Decatur Minute and 231 Sycamore Street and will offer fresh, informative, non-partisan content about tax and housing developments.  It will also provide timely reminders about tax deadlines for homeowners, local and national news on property taxes and real estate, topical educational posts about your tax bill, and special announcements.

The Decatur Tax Blog wants to hear back from the community and keep the conversation a two-way street welcoming feedback, concerns, and questions about property taxes, or just suggestions on ways to improve the blog.

Check out the Decatur Tax Blog and say hello to Russ Madison (aka “the tax man”) today.

DBA Celebrates Successful Year

The Decatur Business Association held its annual Holiday Party in December.  In addition to honoring Decatur’s Hometown Heroes, they celebrated a successful 2009 by honoring outgoing officers and electing new officers for 2010.

The Decatur Business Association contributes to our community in many ways including producing several successful events and festivals such as Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Beach Party, Bonfire/Marshmallow Roast, Breakfast With Santa, and the Easter Egg Hunt.

The organization consists of volunteers, including their officers and committee chairs.  A big shout out goes to outgoing treasurer Laura Bevins, who served the organization as a volunteer for 10 years.  She is pictured with her very own street sign as a special parting gift.

2009 President Ann Berg also received a special sign for her contribution as president and president elect of the organization.  She is pictured with incoming president Scott Drake.

It is membership time for DBA so take a minute to check out the Decatur Business Association website for information about all they do to make our community a better place.

This is just a friendly reminder that regular trash services for Friday, Jan. 1 will be on Thursday, Dec. 31. Thursday services will be on Wednesday, Dec. 30.

This Saturday, Jan. 2 is the official “Bring One for the Chipper” event. City of Decatur residents can drop off live Christmas tress at the Christmas Tree Recycling Center in the Agnes Scott parking lot (the entrance is between 184 and 206 S. Decatur's Hometown Heroes Rock!

Decatur announced its newest 2009 Hometown Heroes at the Decatur Business Association Holiday Party at the Holiday Inn Decatur Conference Plaza.  Hometown Heroes are those folks that work, mostly behind the scenes, to make our community a better place to live and work.  And they work for free!

Decatur started its Hometown Hero program at the close of the 1996 Summer Games after our Hometown to the World Festival during the Olympics.  We put on a 10-day festival thanks to hundreds of volunteers who helped make it happen.

This year marks the 13th year of honoring volunteers and we now have 217 Hometown Heroes.  You can see the photos from each year at City Hall – they are on the wall that goes down the steps to the City Commission Meeting Room.

Pictured here with our City Commissioners are our newest Hometown Heroes – Bill & Vicki Ainslie, Michelle Bray, Bill Bryson, Greg & Nicole Coleson, Mary & Bill Flad, Gary Kronick, Dot Moye, Mercedes Pasqualetti, and Vernita Pinto.

Thanks for all you do for Decatur!
