Do you ever think about how your City tax dollars are spent?  How are decisions made to fund City services?  Where does the money come from to pay for these services?  How is the City faring during the economic recession?  If you’ve ever pondered these questions or any others about the City’s budget and finances, come be a part of the City’s Budget Focus Group for the 2010-2011 budget year.  You’ll have the opportunity to meet City budget staff, learn about the budgeting process and give your opinion on budget priorities.

Meetings are scheduled for the following dates:
March 9th
April 13th
May 11th

All meetings will be held at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough Street, at 7:00 p.m.  Please notify Andrea Arnold, Assistant City Manager, at andrea.arnold@decaturga.com or 404-370-4102, if you plan to attend.

You can follow the progress of the budget process on our website at www.decaturga.com by clicking on ‘Residents’ and ‘Annual Budget’.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gaurav Malhotra yesterday, owner of Nectar in Oakhurst.  Gaurav is very passionate about sustainability, and has undertaken several measures to ensure that his business is as “green” as possible.   For those of you who may not be familiar with Nectar, they serve fresh raw juices, smoothies, handcrafted sandwiches and gourmet ice cream.  I highly recommend their smoothies!

Nectar’s goal is to “serve food with love and without compromising the integrity of our planet.”  They were recently featured on My Fox Atlanta, which highlighted their partnership with the Oakhurst Community Garden to compost food scraps.  They also strive to buy local food whenever possible, recycle, and use environmentally friendly take-out containers.  For you wheatgrass fans out there, you can enjoy it guilt free because it’s locally grown!

Try a piece of banana bread made from bananas that were slightly too ripe for smoothies.

Want some ice cream? Why not take it to go in a compostable container?

I give two big sustainable thumbs up to Nectar for their efforts.  If you have questions about how your Decatur business could be more sustainable, or want to know more about other efforts in the City of Decatur, please see my contact information below.

The Decatur Arts Alliance has a great Fine Arts Exhibition that is part of the annual Decatur Arts Festival. The exhibition is held at the Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott College and has a well attended Opening Reception in conjunction with the May meeting of the Decatur Business Association. They offer cash prizes to the winning artists as well as provide an opportunity for artists’ work to be seen by the community. The exhibit ends with a “Last Call!” closing reception which includes insights into the art by some of the artists.

Time To Design a New Logo

The 2009 Winning Design: Mr. Firkin!

The Decatur Craft Beer Festival may be months away, but it is time to start thinking about the 2010 logo. Last year we had over 30 entries and each year the committee has a harder time selecting from all the great designs. There is so much talent in this city!!

The selected logo will appear on the 2010 festival t-shirt, commemorative glass, and marketing materials. For information please visit the Decatur Craft Beer Festival website. All entries must be received in the Special Events office by 5 pm on June 15, 2010. How creative can you be?

Congrats to Harris Botnik, owner of Worthmore Jewelers on the square, for making it into the AJC’s My Style section this past week! Even though Harris owns shops in other areas of town, he is a great local community member and always seems to be hanging out Decatur. In the feature, he gives a shout out to Rockit for being his favorite store – located just across the MARTA plaza on the square.

Check out his other outfits and photos of his extensive watch collection here.
