Three of Decatur's Communications Officers L to R: Jennifer Guthrie, Lynette Hardmon and Terria Brown

Beginning Sunday, April 11th until Saturday, April 17, 2010 it is National Telecommunicators Week.  National Public Safety Telecommunications Week  has been set aside so everyone can be made more aware of the Communications Officers hard work and dedication, which provide a vital link to the public safety services on which we have come to rely every day.   Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. It was first conceived by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Office in 1981 and was observed only at that agency for three years. Members of the Virginia and North Carolina chapters of the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) became involved in the mid-1980s. By the early 1990s, the national APCO organization convinced Congress of the need for a formal proclamation. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) introduced what became H.J. Res. 284 to create “National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week.”

A big thanks to the City of Decatur’s Communications Officers for their hard work and commitment:

The Decatur Farm to School Initiative is hosting two events in April to raise money to integrate Farm to School principles into the curriculum and the cafeteria. The first event, in conjunction with Earth Day, an April 17th viewing of the film Dirt! The Movie in the new Decatur High School Auditorium.  Dirt! The Movie is an Official Selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival (visit www.dirtthemovie.org for more details).  Tickets are $5 per person and benefit Decatur Farm to School.  Ticket sales start that evening at the DHS auditorium from 7-7:30pm and a brief discussion session will follow the movie.  Be sure to check out our concession stand of locally made goodies, including special treats provided by Nectar, and Farm to School t-shirts for sale.

The second event is a Dine Out for Farm to School on Tuesday, April 20th from 5-9pm.  Leon’s Full Service, Steinbecks, The Iberian Pig, Cakes & Ale, Brick Store Pub, and Universal Joint will host this event and will donate a percentage of the night’s proceeds to Decatur Farm to School.  Make plans now to come out early with the family, or grab your friends for a night out!  Each restaurant will serve up Farm-to-School menu items using local ingredients, and Cakes & Ale will also have a kids menu item from 5-7pm.

We need everyone to come out to help these two events raise funds for healthy foods in our schools, so make plans now to see Dirt! The Movie on April 17th and to dine out on April 20th!

Volunteers and restaurants owners who are interested in supporting the event can contact Kristin Allin of Cakes & Ale at kristin@cakesandalerestaurant.com for additional information.
Additional information on the Decatur Farm to School initiative can be accessed at www.decaturfarmtoschool.org.

Decatur Farm to School partners include Georgia Organics, the Oakhurst Community Garden, the Decatur Education Foundation, and Decatur Active Living.

Update from Little Shop of Stories Owner Diane, 4/13/10:  At Little Shop of Stories, we believe that healthy eaters make healthy readers, and that’s why we are supporting the Decatur Farm to School Initiative.  Eat at participating restaurants on April 20th and then bring in your receipt to get 20% off your Little Shop purchase.

Thursday, April 15 • 7 p.m. • DHS Theater
$5 adults/$3 students at the door
Proceeds benefit the Decatur High PTSA’s Cultural Arts Committee

A celebration of visual art, singing, photography, dance, drama, music, culinary arts, video, and creative writing – the largest showcase of creative arts in Decatur High School’s history!

The idea for this showcase came from a Decatur Master Arts Plan focus group conversation in which participants confessed that they didn’t know anything about what the school system offered arts-wise. Well, here’s your chance!

We will hold one last public input session for the Cultural Arts Master Plan on Monday, April 12 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore Street.  Come and hear a presentation from the consultants and have a chance for additional comments and suggestions.  The entire community is invited – even if you have not participated in an earlier session.

Now is your chance to enter to be a part of the annual Atlanta Celebrates Photography exhibit at Worthmore Jewelers.

Worthmore has just announced they are accepting submissions for  “The Story Teller”, their 2nd annual juried exhibition in partnership with Atlanta Celebrates Photography. Exhibition dates are October 2 – November 6, 2010 and the deadline for submissions is Friday, May 21. To receive an entry form email worthmore.gallery@gmail.com.

After openings its doors a couple of months ago, Sammiches N’ Stuff, located below Eddie’s Attic, has gone live with its website. You can check out their menu (I personally love all their breakfast sammiches), place a catering order and best of all, place an individual order online here. Sammiches N’ Stuff is currently offering a 10 percent discount on all online orders. The eatery will also be open on weekends starting this Saturday.

Sawicki’s just launched its new website, www.sawickisfood.com where you can order your favorite gourmet items online. I’ll still be stopping by to get my roasted pork sandwiches, but it’s nice to know I have the option of ordering delicious cheeses, olive oils and chocolates from the comfort of my home.

Tornado Siren Test

As it is the first Wednesday of the month, we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m today. The test should last approximately one minute.

Taco Mac by Dawn Kinney Martin

Atlanta artist Dawn Kinney Martin will be featured at a reception at the Decatur Gallery this coming Saturday, from 5 until 10 pm. Dawn is an Atlanta-based artist with national and international collectors. Each year she photographs landscapes and structures during her travels and paints from these photos throughout the year. Dawn has also become a favorite for her depictions of local landmarks such as Taco Mac and the Highland Pub.

The Gallery will provide light hors d’oeuvres and beverages during the reception. Plus if the weather is pleasant, they will open their outdoor artist market in front of the Gallery and try and coax Dawn into doing a painting demonstration! Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday evening in Decatur!

Just in case you need a reason to visit one of our fine restaurants or pubs…….

From yesterbeer.com:

At 12:01 AM on April 7, 1933 – after 13 years of prohibition – legal beer went on sale in 19 states and the District of Columbia.  In the first 24 hours an estimated 1.5 million barrels of beer were enjoyed by the exuberant masses!  Proprietors sold beer at five cents a glass or ten cents a bottle.  Grocery stores sold beer for $2 a case of 24 pints.  Night clubs held special parties and cities hosted midnight celebrations to welcome the return of legal beer.  Official repeal followed 8 months later – but April 7th will forever be known as “Brew Year’s Eve”.
