The Green Umbrella program will serve to bring together all of the local and regional environmental organizations whose work impacts our city.  The program is brought to you by the Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board.  It is our goal that the Green Umbrella meetings will foster collaboration and sharing, and ensure that our City continues to be a model for sustainability.  These meetings will be hosted quarterly.

Date: May 4th, 2010 (tonight!)
Time: 7:00pm – 8:00pm (Presentations)

8:00pm – 8:30pm (Roundtable Discussions-optional)

Location: Decatur City Hall

City Commission Meeting Room

509 North McDonough St.

From 7:00pm-8:00pm, local organizations have been invited to give brief presentations which outline their background and objectives for the upcoming year.  The goal is to learn just enough about each group to become familiar with their mission and needs. Roundtable discussions will be held from 8:00pm – 8:30pm for people that wish to continue talking with other green-minded folks.

Several groups have already submitted PowerPoint slides, however, we welcome all late comers!  If you want to just come and listen, or if you want to present, please join us.  There is plenty of room under the Green Umbrella.

For more information please contact Decatur’s Resource Conservation Coordinator, Lena Stevens at lena.stevens@decaturga.com or 404-370-4102.

Congratulations to Officer Deborah Strawn who was presented with the Thomas O. Davis Award at last night’s Decatur Business Association meeting!

Officer Deborah Strawn

Decatur’s Thomas O. Davis Award honors a public employee who has helped strengthen the bond between government and the community, served as a role model for others in public service, contributed to the well-being of the community, inspired others to get involved in public service, and served the public with respect. The award is named for Decatur’s long-time city attorney.

Officer Strawn, who has worked with the City of Decatur Police Department for 25 years, was honored for her service and commitment to her job and the community. Strawn supervises the School Crossing Guards, is in charge of the Evidence Room, and works most of our special events. It is a pleasure to work with someone as dedicated as Deborah Strawn.

2010 Census Follow-Up

Beginning on May 1, 2010, for a period of 6 to 8 weeks,  census takers will visit households that did not complete and return the census questionnaires that were mailed to their residences. This “Non-Response Follow-up” operation will ensure that everyone in Decatur is counted in the 2010 Census.

A few things to keep in mind during this time:

  • Census takers are your neighbors (people from your community), hired by the Census Bureau, to go door-to-door and collect census information from residents who have not returned their 2010 Census forms.
  • Census takers will contact residences up to 6 times, each time leaving a door hanger. The door hanger will have a phone number (404-239-2160) on it so that residents can call to schedule a visit and be counted.
  • Census takers visiting households will have a black census bag as well as a 2 1/8” X 3 3/8” non-photo identification badge.

Plan on attending the annual Decatur Green Fest, to be held this Saturday, May 1st from 3 until 9:30 pm. The event helps to kick off the Concert on the Square series and celebrates “being green” with sustainable product vendors, artists working in recycled materials, organic foods, children’s activities and a full schedule of musical entertainment. Night Driving in Small Towns kicks off the event at 3 pm, followed by Decatur’s own Mike Killeen at 4 pm, Sydney Eloise Ward plays at 5 pm, Jeff Hix and the Heretics begin playing at 6 pm, and the Concert on the Square from 7 until 9:30 pm features The Holland Dutch.

Atlanta Light Bulbs, Inc. and the City of Decatur have partnered to bring a light bulb exchange to the event. Attendees will receive 1 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb in exchange for signing an agreement to discard 1 regular, incandescent bulb when they get home. However, if attendees bring an incandescent bulb to the event, they can receive 2 CFL bulbs!

Hope to see you on the Square!

“When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you …. when you’re laughing, the sun comes shining through!” the song says.  On World Laughter Day you can laugh with the whole world, especially your friends and neighbors in Decatur.  This will be the 4th year that the Decatur Bandstand has been the site of a World Laughter celebration from 2:00-3:00 on the 1st Sunday in May.

Jean Woodall Leads Laughter Day in 2009

Jean Woodall, a Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, will host the event along with a few other Laughter cheerleaders.  We could all use more laughter these days, and there are no yoga poses when you join in  the merriment.  It’s good for what ails you and it’s free.  Bring your kids and your silly bone and laugh more in one hour than you did all last year.

Laughter Yoga started in India, but it’s so contagious that the laughter epidemic has spread around the world.  If you have questions, call Jean at 404-378-1673.  If you want to read more about World Laughter Day visit www.laughteryoga.org.
