Due to the 100% chance of rain tomorrow, we have decided to reschedule Touch A Truck for April 30 from 10 am until 1 pm. The Public Works folks have cleaned all the trucks in anticipation of the event, so if you see them around be sure to tell them how nice the trucks look!

See you on April 30th.

Kismet Now Open

Kismet, a jewelry store next to Taste on Church Street, just opened today. I popped in to meet the owners, Tony and Sylvia Gezgin, and tried a few pieces on. The scorpion and elephant (its ears and tusk move!) rings caught my eye.

And I had to take a photo of this giant owl ring:

Tony and Sylvia are incredibly friendly. Stop by and welcome them to the neighborhood. If you stop in soon, you might be able to snag a piece of Turkish Delight – they have two open boxes on the counter for visitors – yum!

The event will be held in the Callaway Parking Lot, 120 West Trinity Place from 10am until 1pm. Just in case it rains, the rain date is April 30th. The event is free to the community.

Hope to see you at Touch A Truck!

I spent a few days last week at the SFEA Conference held out at Stone Mountain Park and look what happened while I was there…

Regional Festivals Honored at Industry Event

2011 Kaleidoscope Award Winners Recognized

MARIETTA, Ga. (February 22, 2011) The best and brightest were spotlighted at Southeast Festivals and Events Kaleidoscope Awards. Hosted at the Stone Mountain Inn, St. Mountain, Georgia, February 21-23, the ceremony was held in conjunction with the annual Southeast Festivals and Events (SFEA) conference.  Top festivals and events throughout the southeast were recognized for their outstanding contribution to the events industry.

“The quality of submissions continues to go up each year making it more difficult to choose only one winner,” mentioned Carolyn Morris, executive director for SFEA.  “It is a shame that only one can ‘win gold.’ It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your event or community and award those who have worked hard creating the perfect event or festival. The recognition a festival gets for winning is priceless.”

The name “kaleidoscope” was selected due to the colors in the image that represent the many different festivals and facets within events. This year a new logo accompanied the plaques and certificates that were handed out to the recipients.

The ceremony recognized diverse items such as best t-shirt, best volunteer to best event. The awards acknowledge special achievement in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.  The awards program is sponsored by RCS Productions.

Have you ever wondered what you could be doing to improve water management on your property or in your community? Perhaps you’ve taken a stroll around Glenlake Park and noticed all the lovely stream bank restoration efforts that were included in the renovation?  Well, you’re in luck.  The City of Decatur is hosting a Green Umbrella meeting on Thursday, March 3rd for you to learn all about green infrastructure.

Green infrastructure methods imitate nature’s own systems to manage water using engineered soils and specific plant materials on a regional, community and individual site scale to reduce flooding and improve water quality.  Attendees will gain an understanding of the role of green infrastructure in our cities, parks and even our own back yards. Topics will include:

  • Rain gardens
  • Bioswales
  • Structural soils for urban trees
  • Utilizing the existing natural landscape to reduce flooding and improve water quality

Our presenter will be Steve Provost (RLA, LEED AP), from jB+a, inc. and an Environmental Sustainability Board member.  Following the presentation there will be Q&A as well as networking time.  We hope you can join us!

Date:  Thursday, March 3rd

Time: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Location: Decatur City Hall

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of March so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m.   The test should last approximately one minute.

Ashram Wellness just opened it’s doors in Oakhurst in the former Nectar space. Stop by and take advantage of their opening specials:

We need your help!

For the fourth year, Decatur will host a water station for the Publix (was ING) Georgia Marathon on Sunday morning, March 20.  Once again, we will provide water, Gatorade and encouragement to 3,000+ marathon participants as they pass through Decatur at the halfway point in their 26.2 mile personal challenge. Fifteen veterans have volunteered to return to staff the water station, most for the fourth year.  But we need another 20 to do the job.  We set up on Clairemont across from the Holiday Inn with Mr. Entertainer and Decatur DJ, Doug Aholt, providing the soundtrack! The music alone is worth it.  We arrive at 6:00AM and are finished about 10:30AM.  If you are up for a unique Sunday morning experience and for helping to show Decatur’s hospitality to these marathoners, please join us.  Volunteer sign-up instructions follow.  Sign up as soon as possible so we will know that we will have a full crew. If you have trouble signing up, email water station coordinator, Michael Harbin, at mharbin9@gmail.com or call 404.405.3618.
