December Siren Test

Can you believe it?! Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of December which means we should be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. But since the weather is currently forecasted to be uncooperative tomorrow, the test has been postponed until Thursday, 6 December 2012 at 5:00 p.m. The test should last about one minute.siren

If you have questions or want more information about the siren system, check out the Siren page on the City’s website or contact Assistant City Manager Tony Parker at 404-370-4102.

Santa Claus is comin' to town!

Tonight is the night! The big man himself, Santa Claus, helps us welcome the holiday season by lighting the tree atop the Little Shop of Stories on the Square.
Festivities begin at 7pm with caroling, hot chocolate, snacks and a magical surprise-you don’t want to miss it.
Come out early to stop by the Keep It Indie-Catur tent for free gift wrapping and remember to bring us your receipts from local Decatur shops-we’ll give you a $20 restaurant gift card for every $200 you’ve spent in November.

See you on the Square tonight…

Small Business Saturday was a rousing success last weekend.  We gave out over 75 gift cards to Decatur restaurants, folks got their gifts wrapped free, and enjoyed the music playing from the bandstand.  It was so successful that we decided to keep the tent and open it on this week’s Terrific Thursday, Nov. 29 from 5 – 9 p.m.

If you spend $200 in a Decatur shop in November and bring us your receipts, we will give you a $20 gift card to a Decatur restaurant.  Hurry, though, because Friday is the last November shopping day!

See you Thursday at the tent!

After over a year of study and deliberation the Zoning Ordinance Update Task Force (ZTF) will be presenting their final recommendations for consideration to the Planning Commission on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. and to the City Commission on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 7:30 pm. The proposed recommendations can be found at http://www.decaturga.com/index.aspx?page=641

Based on the direction of the 2010 Strategic Plan the proposed recommendations encourage community gardens, allow for shared parking in commercial areas, update regulations dealing with accessory dwellings and provide new standards for transitions between residential and commercial properties.

Thank you for your past participation on Open City Hall and at the public meetings held throughout this year. The task force members encourage you to attend these final hearings to share your thoughts and if you have written comments please email them to Amanda.thompson@decaturga.com

This Friday and Saturday you have the opportunity to tour seven of Decatur’s most beautiful and unique homes on the 30th annual Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes.

Proceeds from the Tour benefit four outstanding Decatur non-profit organizations: the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund, the Decatur Education Foundation, the DeKalb History Center and the Wylde Center.
