Quick sheep update

For those of you wondering when the sheep in Decatur Cemetery will arrive, good news: the sheep are here! They should be at the cemetery for the next 7 – 10 days, depending on how quickly they eat. (The rule of thumb is 100 sheep can clear one acre in one week.) The community is welcome to come see the sheep and their guardian dogs anytime the Cemetery is open.

roadwork

Beginning at 7 pm this evening, the intersection of West Trinity Place and Commerce Drive is going to be milled and repaved overnight. The intersection will remain open during construction and there will be police officer assistance with traffic control, but try to avoid the area if possible. Work will be complete by Tuesday morning.

This Saturday the Decatur Business Association is pleased to welcome Roxie Watson back to the Community Bandstand for what is sure to be an awesome Bluegrass concert. And what is better than a free outdoor concert with all of your friends and neighbors?  FIREWORKS!  That’s right, this Saturday the City of Decatur will be making up our rained-out 4th of July fireworks show.  The show should begin around 9:15 or so-immediately following the concert.

Just a few logistics for you- E. Court Square and N. McDonough Street will remain open, however Trinity will be closed from N. McDonough down to Commerce.  Parts of Commerce and the parking lot at SunTrust & Cook’s Warehouse will also be closed from 7:00 until the Fireworks are over.  The DeKalb County parking deck will be open for people to park- just not on the top two levels. If you park there, allow plenty of time after the fireworks before you will be able to exit the garage.

Due to the rain, the Concert on the Square has been cancelled for tonight.

Don’t forget next week’s Saturday concert will be followed by fireworks!

storm water

Reeves Contracting completed installation of one junction box in Church Street and will finish the second box early next week.  Once both junction boxes are installed, new catch basins and inlets will be installed to connect existing storm lines to the new drainage system.

Reeves also will complete the replacement of the old water lines on East Maple Street.  This will require shutting water service for a period of time.  This work will be done after midnight to minimize the inconvenience.  A notice will be emailed when this work is scheduled.

Traffic control measures have been established on Church Street until it is reopened, so expect traffic delays in this area.

storm drain

Trees Atlanta will use a herd of about 75 sheep to help control Japanese hops, kudzu and other invasive plants on the steep slope between Section 14 and the creek at the Decatur Cemetery.

“Sheep offer a low-impact solution for controlling invasive plants on sites,” said Trees Atlanta Forest Restoration Coordinator, Brian Williams. “As long as the sites do not contain sensitive or endangered plants that we want to keep safe, sheep can graze and help us eliminate invasive plants until they are gone,” he continued. Trees Atlanta is completing a 5-year woodland restoration effort in the stream corridor on the east side of the Cemetery.

The sheep are expected to begin work at Decatur Cemetery, starting on Monday, September 23. The sheep in this program are protected by a human shepherd and livestock guardian dogs, and the sites are surrounded by solar powered, low-voltage electrified fencing to keep the sheep safe and on-task while they are working. The work is expected to take 7 to 10 days at the Cemetery.

Trees Atlanta has used sheep to help eradicate invasive plants at Chastain Park, Kirkwood Forest, Morningside Nature Preserve, Candler Park, Herbert Green Nature Preserve, Perkerson Park and other green spaces in metro Atlanta. The sheep are provided by Ewe-niversally Green, a local firm that specializes in environmentally sound conservation techniques.
