Worthmore Jewelers is holding its annual care package item collection drive through Sunday, Nov. 10 to benefit U.S. troops through the organization Operation Stars and Stripes.

WorthmoreJewelers_Stars&Stripes

For this year’s drive, Worthmore is pitting its Decatur and Midtown stores against each other to see who can gather the most donations of candy and other supplies. Support the troops and help your neighborhood win by bringing in donations to the Worthmore Decatur Square location (117 East Court Square) starting Nov. 1. All who donate will be entered into a random drawing to win a $50.00 Worthmore Jewelers gift card.

Suggested donation items include: unwanted Halloween candy, toiletries, entertainment items, prepackaged snacks, and warm weather clothes. A full list of items accepted at the drive can be found here: operationstarsandstripes.org/?page_id=33.

Worthmore has been working with the Operation Stars and Stripes organization for the past five years. “These collection drives are a simple way for us to show our troops that we support them and appreciate their sacrifice,” said Harris Botnick, Worthmore founder and owner. “For every care package sent, we have received a heart-warming thank you letter back. Sometimes these packages are the only things our servicemen and women receive all year.”

Let’s help Decatur win! Bring in your donations by this Sunday.

Halloween in Decatur

Every Halloween, the Decatur Police Department has additional employees on duty throughout the entire City. To supplement regular staffing, additional Police Officers, Investigators, CAPS volunteers and Command Staff will patrol neighborhoods, parks, school properties, the Decatur Cemetery and business districts in marked patrol cars, unmarked cars, bicycles and on foot.  During Halloween there is more vehicular and pedestrian traffic in residential neighborhoods, including many children who may be distracted and not paying attention.  So please be extra cautious and aware.

Remember, if you have given out all your “treats” or you do not want to participate, turn off the front lighting at your home.  Also, if you see or hear things that seem stranger than what you would expect from Halloween fun or it is later in the evening, call the Decatur Police Department at 404-373-6551.

We want everyone to have a safe, fun and spooktacular Halloween. For safety tips, check out the following link to the “Playing it Safe on Halloween” brochure published by the National Crime Prevention Council.

Happy Halloween!

storm water

Reeves Contracting  has installed about 200 linear feet of new 48” storm drainage pipe through the parking lot at 215 Church Street. Next week, Reeves will continue work towards Decatur Fire Station No. 1 (shown in the background of the photo below).  Crossing East Trinity Place and installing new inlets at Fire Station No. 1 will be the next big challenge.

Once the new storm line is in place at the firehouse, Reeves will begin installing a new storm line and inlets on Church Street.

Both East Maple Street and Church Street are open to regular traffic at present.  Once work begins on the new Church Street storm line, traffic will be limited to one-way in the southbound direction where construction activity is taking place.

Halloween Safety

With Halloween right aroung the corner, check out these helpful Halloween safety tips from our friends at Smart911 –

  • Take a digital photo of your kids. While it’s great for the scrapbook, it’s important to have a recent and detailed description in the event of an emergency.
  • Make sure you child’s costume is safe. Is the fabric fire retardant? Does their mask have proper eye, nose and mouth openings? Can they walk easily in it?
  • Use a buddy system. If you are headed out with a group, make sure there is a buddy system in place. It’s easy for a child to get left behind or mixed in with other groups.
  • Know who your kids are trick or treating with. Exchange phone numbers with your child’s friends and their parents. In the event of an emergency, you can notify them.
  • Check the candy bag before letting your child dig in. Look for any opened or unsealed candy or treats and dispose of them. Stay away from homemade treats.
  • Sign up for Smart911 at www.smart911.com to give valuable information about yourself, family members, bedroom locations, utility shut off information, and pet information that will automatically display on the 9-1-1 call taker’s screen when you dial 9-1-1.

Updated information is now available regarding the proposed temporary moratorium on single-family residential structural demolition and large tree removal as a part of construction or renovation.  This proposal was initially made available on October 14, 2013 as a single ordinance.  However, after public review and feedback, the two issues have been separated into individual ordinances that can be discussed and acted upon separately.

The City Commission will discuss the proposals during the work session and regular meeting on Monday, October 21, 2013 at Decatur City Hall, 509 N. McDonough St. Both meetings are open to the public.

  • 6:30pm- Work Session
  • 7:30pm- Regular Meeting

If either or both proposals are adopted, the properties affected would be limited to those  zoned R-60 and R-85 Single Family Residential. Each moratorium would be effective through Jan. 24, 2014.

The Low-Down on Ponce de Leon

As you drive around downtown Decatur today, you may notice traffic cones, blocked meters, and signs on the light poles. Although we are in the throws of getting ready for tomorrow’s (sold out) Decatur Craft Beer Festival, all of this prep is actually for the Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk that will come through downtown Decatur around lunchtime today.  Traffic may get a little slow and there will be lots of extra people walking around but lets give everyone our warmest Decatur welcome- they are walking a long way for a very good cause!

And in case you are planning to come through downtown tomorrow, you should note that Ponce de Leon between Clairemont Avenue and Church Street will be closed as will N. McDonough Street and E. Court Square. The Decatur Craft Beer Festival is considered one of the best beer festivals in the country and raises more money in 5 hours than any other fundraising effort around town. Do you want to know where the proceeds are going this year? Take a look at this impressive list!
