We love it when we hear stories like this one: a local restaurant and store hosting an event for a Decatur-based non-profit.

On January 12 and 13, The Pinewood Tippling Room and Decatur Package Store raised $11,710 with a “Pappy Van Winkle Degustation” event.

The Pinewood — best known for their extraordinary cocktails and reinterpreted regional fare — hosted the event and served a seven-course meal. The courses were paired with a seven-whisky prix fixe, courtesy of Decatur Package Store, and featuring the infamous Pappy Van Winkle whiskeys.

Throughout the night, participants silently bid on each bottle being served, as well as the elusive 23-year-old Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye. Pappy, as it’s called by its legions of fans, is easily the most coveted bourbon in the world.

Reeves is completing installation of the new storm sewer on Church Street south of East Maple and will start construction of the new system on East Howard Avenue.  During this phase, East Howard Avenue will be closed to all traffic between North Candler Street (at the Dairy Queen) and Church Street.

Starting next week, on-street parking will be available on Church Street and traffic will again run in both directions, except for the area closest to the CSX railroad. Download a schematic plan illustrating temporary traffic changes here.

Following completion of the work on East Howard, Reeves will start installing the new storm sewer north from East Maple towards East Trinity Place.

The Valentine in October

There is something so fun and mysterious about this little puzzle. Who dresses the Valentine couple for each season? How often to they do it? Is it really a secret or am I just out of the loop?

The proposed Decatur Tree Conservation Ordinance is available along with the administrative standards that will be use to implement the new provisions. Several elements of the proposal would significantly change the City’s approach to tree conservation as compared to the current ordinance, and we want your opinion.

In October 2013, the City Commission passed a 90-day moratorium on tree removal.  Additionally, they fast-tracked the development of a new tree ordinance that would reflect current best management practices in the industry.

That effort has been underway with the assistance of tree consultant, Connie Head of Technical Forestry Services, and the City Commission is scheduled to consider the recommendations at their regular meeting on January 21st at 7:30pm.  Please review the materials and provide your opinion using Open City Hall.  The forum for this discussion will be open from January 16th – January 21st (noon).

Decatur Tree Conservation Ordinance

Administrative Standards

Draft recommendations were presented to the City Commission during a work session on January 6th.  A recording of the presentation is available online here.

What are the major changes proposed in the new ordinance?

  • Hire a full time City Arborist.
  • Switch to measuring tree canopy instead of tree density.
  • Set a city-wide canopy coverage goal.
  • Create one class of protected trees.
  • Define boundary trees and establish rules for their protection.
  • All protected tree removals or disturbance will require a permit.
  • Permit applications will require consultation with a certified arborist.
  • The existing canopy coverage of a property and proposed scope of work will determine replanting requirements.

We welcome all comments and questions.  Please review the materials and provide your opinion using Open City Hall.  The forum for this discussion will be open from January 16th – January 21st (noon).

Forty five percent of us usually make New Year’s Resolutions, but typically only 8% are successful in achieving their resolutions.  What if in addition to or instead of weight loss or a new hobby, you resolved to keep you and your family safe in 2014? Here are five simple resolutions that you’ll have no trouble keeping.

  1. Ensure your family is prepared for an emergency.  Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan how you will contact one another in different situations. Additionally, stock an emergency kit, discuss your family emergency plan and sign up for emergency alerting in your area.
  2. Be sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half.  Make sure to test and change the batteries every 6 months.
  3. Run regular checks on all family vehicles to prevent breakdowns or accidents. Winter weather poses a lot of risks and you best chance for safety is a well running vehicle. The most important aspect of tire maintenance is proper inflation of your tires.  Seventy five percent of drivers wash their cars monthly while only 14% correctly checks the tire pressure.
  4. Take care of yourself before you can care for others.  It’s important to take preventative measures like washing your hands regularly, wiping down work stations and covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze and cough. If you do get the flu, stay home. If you go to work, you will be spreading your illness to your co-workers and increasing your chance of getting pneumonia.
  5. Sign up for Smart911 to give 9-1-1 valuable information about yourself, family members, your home, pets and vehicles that will automatically display on the 9-1-1 call taker’s screen when you dial 9-1-1. It’s private and secure and you control what information is in your profile. These details can save valuable seconds or even minutes during an emergency. (www.Smart911.com)

Although 8% of Americans do not keep their New Year’s resolutions, we hope you are able to commit to safety and keep these five resolutions throughout 2014. Be sure to check out the Emergency Management Services page on the City’s website for additional information and tips.
