Most of us were spared from an extended loss of power a few weeks ago but do you know what you would do if such an event were to occur in the future? Our friends at the Ready Campaign think you should know the following tips and we do, too!

  • Fill plastic containers with water and place them in the refrigerator and freezer if there’s room. Leave about an inch of space inside each one, because water expands as it freezes. Chilled or frozen water will help keep food cold during a temporary power outage, by displacing air that can warm up quickly with water or ice that keeps cold for several hours without additional refrigeration.
  • Be aware that most medication that requires refrigeration can be kept in a closed refrigerator for several hours without a problem. If unsure, check with your physician or pharmacist.
  • Keep your car tank at least half full because gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.
  • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it. Garage doors can be heavy, so know that you may need help to lift it.
  • Keep a key to your house with you if you regularly use the garage as the primary means of entering your home, in case the garage door will not open.

While it seems we’re done with the polar weather for a while, it’s never too late to plan for the next storm event.

Yesterday’s announcement of Decatur as one of 34 cities under consideration for the next round of Google Fiber expansion resulted in an outpouring of enthusiasm from residents, business owners and, well, just about everyone. City leaders and staff are busy taking the next steps in the joint planning process, and updates will be posted here as they become available.

Google wants to know that there is grassroots support for Google Fiber in Decatur. Here’s what you can do to help:

1)      Visit https://fiber.google.com/newcities/ and click on the “Get Updates” button. The more people who sign up for updates that live or work in Decatur the better, so be sure to use a City of Decatur address.

2)      On Twitter? Tweet your enthusiasm to @GoogleFiber and @Google using the hashtag #DecaturGA

3)      Express your support on the Google Facebook page in a comment that tags the Downtown Decatur Facebook page.

4)      Follow the Fiber Google+ page.

5)      Get creative! Google has a corporate culture that values forward thinking, so reaching out to the company in creative and innovative ways is encouraged. How would Google Fiber improve your life, your business or the entire Decatur community? Let Google know “Decatur wants Google Fiber!”

Today, Mayor Jim Baskett announced that Decatur is on a short list of cities working with Google to explore the possibility of bringing the ultra high speed Google Fiber broadband network to the city.

Improving broadband speed and choice for our residents has been a priority for Decatur for years, including applying for Google Fiber in 2010. Today’s average American broadband speed is 9.8 Megabits per second. In contrast, Google Fiber could bring Decatur residents access to “Gigabit” Internet connections up to 1,000 Megabits per second—or up to 100 times faster than basic broadband.

“The City of Decatur is proud to be on Google’s short list,” said Mayor Baskett. “Decatur is known for being forward thinking in our commitment to sustainable, long-term planning. We now have the opportunity to demonstrate that we are fiber ready and future ready. Our entire community of homes, schools and places of worship would benefit from Google Fiber’s unbelievably fast internet speeds, in ways we can’t even imagine. We look forward to Google’s building the infrastructure for this technological investment in our community.”

“Communities with abundant high-speed Internet grow stronger because there’s greater potential to create jobs, drive economic growth, and help students and families get access to essential resources” said Kevin Lo, General Manager for Google Fiber. “The Decatur City Commission is stepping up to see what they can do to make their city ready for the fiber-optic networks that are the future. We look forward to working with the City of Decatur in the coming months to see if we can build the next chapter of the Internet together, on gigabit speeds.”

There is huge consumer demand for faster Internet speeds, because no one likes to wait on the web. Unfortunately, many of the things people love to do online (like gaming, watching movies, video chatting) require a lot of bandwidth, which means that, using today’s connections, consumers often get stuck waiting for pages to load or for videos to buffer. Statistics show that people walk away from slow-loading sites. And gig networks aren’t just about meeting today’s speed needs. The next 100x leap in broadband speeds — to gigabit Internet — will lead to innovation that’s unimaginable today, just as the shift from dial-up to broadband did.

Starting this week, Google will work closely with city leaders and staff on a joint planning process to explore what it would take to build a brand new fiber-optic network capable of delivering these gigabit speeds throughout the city of Decatur. Google will begin compiling a detailed study of local factors that might affect construction plans. Simultaneously, city officials will begin meetings with Google to discuss what it would take to plan and prepare the city for a fiber project of this scale.

Google will provide an update on which cities will get Google Fiber by the end of this year. Google Fiber is an Internet and TV service that provides Internet connectivity that is up to 100x faster than the basic broadband, along with hundreds of HD TV channels. Google Fiber is currently available in Kansas City, Kan., Kansas City, Mo. and Provo, Utah and will be available in Austin, Texas later this year. For more information about this announcement, visit the Google Fiber blog.

Additional information for the news media (including b-roll and graphics) is available on the press website.

The Fall In Love Indie-Catur/Terrific Thursdyas event is cancelled for the evening, but there’s still plenty of reasons to come out:

We’ll be updating this list throughout the day.

All city of Decatur offices, including City Hall and the Design, Environment and Construction (DEC) division of Public Works, are closed tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 13).

Municipal Court hearings for tomorrow evening are cancelled. Call 678-553-6655 to reschedule once offices re-open.

Trash and recycling pick up for Thursday is cancelled. If tomorrow is your regular trash day your trash will be picked up on Friday, Feb. 14 instead.

Overall, things have been quiet in the city of Decatur during this winter weather. There have been no wrecks, no injuries, and no power outages. Public safety personnel and volunteers continue to check on seniors and other vulnerable members of the community.

Temperatures are dropping and more snow is on its way this evening (up to 3” is possible). This will continue to make travel difficult and dangerous. Please stay safe indoors. If you do leave the house, be aware that roads and sidewalks are slippery and frozen. If you or your children choose to sled, please avoid sledding into any roadways.

Thank you to everyone in the community for staying off the roads last night and today. It continues to be fairly quiet in the city, and most city offices are closed. Winter storm and ice storm warnings are still in place across Georgia today through Thursday morning, and more precipitation is expected to fall tonight.

Remember, if the power goes out or you see a tree or other object fall on power lines, contact Georgia Power at 1-888-891-0938. Continue to charge medical devices, phones and other electronics so you are ready in case there is a power outage.

Staff members from the City’s Public Works department are out clearing city sidewalks of slush, and the tractor (pictured above) is busy clearing streets. Please do your part by clearing the sidewalk in front of your home or business.

As always, call the police non-emergency number (404-373-6551) if you require assistance or 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

If there is a loss of power, the city may use the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to communicate with the community. Please take this opportunity before a power outage occurs to register your phone number here.

About CodeRED:

CodeRED Emergency Notification System is a telephone communication service that allows us to quickly notify citizens of emergency situations requiring immediate action.

All residential phone numbers in the BellSouth/AT&T system should be in the telephone database. All city of Decatur businesses should register, as well as individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the last year, and who use a cellular phone as their primary home phone.

The system can dial up to 50,000 phone numbers per hour and deliver a recorded message to individuals or their answering machines.

Conditions as of this posting remain above freezing in the City of Decatur, but the temperature is expected to drop late tonight. There is a serious threat of accumulation of ice on trees and power lines tonight and tomorrow, and this combined with expected heavy winds could result in power outages.

As a precaution, please go ahead and fully charge cell phones and medical devices now. If the power does go out, contact Georgia Power at 1-888-891-0938 to report the outage. Georgia Power has crews pre-staged in the area to respond to any losses of power. Please only call 911 in the event of a life-threatening emergency, not simply to report a power outage. You may also call the Decatur Police non-emergency number if you require public safety assistance: 404-373-6551.

If there is a loss of power, the city may use the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to communicate with the community. Please take this opportunity before a power outage occurs to register your phone number here.
