Join us Sunday morning

run

Each year, the Publix Georgia Marathon runs right through downtown Decatur. This event brings thousands of runners ( and probably new visitors) though our great City. We do our best to welcome them with cheering crowds, upbeat music, and fun noisemakers and signs. We want everyone who runs through Decatur to come back and visit us,so we need to make a lasting impression. So what can you do to help? Call some friends and neighbors and plan to join us along the race route. The runners enter our city limits around 8:30am so come on out and make some noise! We will be there with plenty of noisemakers, pom-poms, and doughnuts to share. Join a group in front of Felini’s , the Old Courthouse, or near the Eastlake Marta Station. fix a leak week 2015

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (Metro Water District) is encouraging Decatur residents to find and fix leaks during Fix a Leak Week, March 16 – 22. Fix a Leak Week is sponsored nationally by the U.S. EPA WaterSense program. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than one trillion gallons of water are wasted every year in U.S. households from easy-to-fix leaks. This amount roughly equals the annual household water use of more than 11 million homes.

Make time to check, twist and replace this week.  If you do have a leaky toilet, faucet, showerhead or irrigation system around your home, grab a wrench or contact your favorite handy person, plumber or WaterSense irrigation partner. Below are some simple steps to help you get started saving both money and water:

  • CHECK for leaks. Look for dripping faucets, shower heads, sprinklers and other fixtures. Also check for toilets with silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank and waiting 15 minutes to see if color appears in the bowl before you flush. Don’t forget to check irrigation systems and spigots too.
  • TWIST on a new aerator. To save water without a noticeable difference in flow in your bathroom, twist on a WaterSense labeled faucet aerator. Also, tighten hose and pipe connections.
  • REPLACE the fixture if necessary. Look for WaterSense labeled models, which are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.

Georgia Tech is researching methods for collecting, analyzing, and interacting with data pertaining to people’s interaction with their environment.  We are planning to deploy a system of sensor units in Decatur to collect real-time data about pedestrian-driven traffic (e.g., foot, skateboard, bicycle, pets) and environmental conditions (e.g., weather, air quality, noise).  The sensor units will send anonymous data to a server at Georgia Tech, which will merge that data with social media feeds (e.g., tweets, check-ins, reviews), which may be relevant to activities in Decatur. Through a novel visualization and sonification (i.e. transforming data into sound) system, our hypothesis is that researchers, city planners, and the public will be able to query this dense amount of data to explore questions about how and why people interact with Decatur by seeing and hearing patterns and correlations in urban infrastructure use and surrounding environmental conditions.

We will be holding an event as part of the Atlanta Science Festival in Decatur Sq. on March 27 to let people to preview the project as well as hear an artistic rendition of city data collected during the week of the festival.  More details about the long-term research project will be presented at the ASF event.

Tour deCatur this Weekend

xorbia event page image

Chick-fil-a reminds you to  join them as they raise money for the Madison Lewis Softball and Scholarship Fund before the Tour deCatur on Saturday, March 14. A portion of the proceeds between 8:00-10:00 a.m. will be donated to the fund! Enjoy breakfast before or after the big race and make a difference for a Decatur High School student in memory of Madison Lewis, Decatur High School softball player and graduate. www.madisonlewisfund.org

March 14th is Pi Day because Pi (the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet) is the symbol for the ration of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
Pi = 3.141592… (it keeps going forever)
This is the ONE and ONLY time in this century that the date will be the first 5 numbers of Pi!  How cool is that!

The 13th annual Tour deCatur benefiting the Decatur Education Foundation will be held Saturday, March 14th – Pi Day and will once again start at Decatur High School.

Janine Kupersmith asked me to share the following fundraiser information. Her son has been shaving his head for seven years and has raised nearly $20,000 for childhood cancer research:

Hi everyone,

As many of you know, my son Evan grows his hair out every year just to shave it off.  Why? It has to do with an organization our family has been involved with for years…St. Baldrick’s.  The mission is straightforward: Conquer Kid’s Cancer.  Over the years I have seen friends in deep pain as their children fight for their lives because of cancer.  Some have lost the battle.

Through St. Baldrick’s we can help let kids be kids. The concept is people raise money and then shave their hair in honor of the kids losing their hair during cancer treatment.  2015 marks the 7th year Evan is shaving his hair to help conquer kid’s cancer.  Please take a look at Evan’s donation page and consider making a donation.  Any amount helps, but it seems like the more money he raises the thicker his hair comes back!

https://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/mypage/748018/2015

The shaving happens on Sunday March 15.  If you are in Atlanta please come by Kavarna in Decatur between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.  Any interest in shaving your hair?  You can still sign-up! Thank you in advance for helping us wipe out this nasty disease.

If you have any questions please contact Kupe at jkupersmith@gmail.com or 404-939-5873.
