The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management just sent us the following information:

Due to the forecast for rain early next week, the Department of Watershed Management (DWM) contractor will begin paving on tomorrow, Saturday, February 20, 2016, several days earlier than previously scheduled.

The street paving will take place between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.  We ask that you please remove all vehicles from the street by 7:00 AM on Saturday, February 20, 2016, prior to the start of paving.

Please call the Project Hotline at 1-800-986-1108 or email projectinfo@dekalbcountyga.gov to report any problems associated with the street paving.

We appreciate your patience during this period and will attempt to minimize the inconvenience.

Happy Arbor Day!

gaarborday

Today is Georgia’s Arbor Day (National Arbor Day is in April). India Woodson, City of Decatur’s landscape infrastructure coordinator, is visiting all of the city buildings today with Fred the tree puppet to celebrate. She’ll be heading over to the Rec Center later this morning to read children’s books about trees. Then, she’ll be planting trees in the Decatur Cemetery this afternoon and in residential neighborhoods tomorrow.

Make sure to wish India and Fred a happy arbor day when you see them around town today and tomorrow!

Update: Here are a few photos from India and Fred’s day

Do you love marathons, but hate running? Are you looking for a fun, easy way to get involved in your community? Do you think your neighborhood streets could use a little temporary pizzazz? If you answered yes to any of these questions (or none of them, for that matter), then this is the volunteer opportunity for you!

Here are the details:

The Publix Atlanta Marathon will pass through our City on Sunday, March 20th and we need your help laying out a welcome mat for the runners.  We’re looking for area residents willing to adopt a portion of the route and set out the tongue in cheek “Burma Shave” rhyme signs along the route (see example pictured above).  Specifically we are looking for folks to adopt sections of College Avenue between Wahoo Grill and South Columbia Drive; downtown Decatur along Commerce Drive from the Columbia overpass to Ponce de Leon Avenue; E. Ponce de Leon to Clairemont and then Clairemont to Commerce; and finally Clairemont Avenue to the YMCA.  Signs are easy to install and can be placed on Saturday or early Sunday morning.   Each set contains five separate signs and we have over 50 sets that need to go out along the route.   City crews will pick up the signs after the race on Sunday.  If you, your neighbors or your neighborhood association is willing to lend a hand, contact Shirley Baylis at Shirley.baylis@decaturga.com or give her a call at 678-553-6573.

The community is invited to the Arbor Day 2016 tree planting and tree maintenance on Friday, February 19.  Meet at 9 a.m. at the Decatur Cemetery Office.

Individuals and groups are welcome.  Come help Decatur grow a stronger and healthier tree canopy and celebrate Arbor Day at the same time.

Contact India Woodson, City of Decatur Landscape Infrastructure Coordinator/Arborist with questions at india.woodson@decaturga.com.

Russ MadisonHomeowners are invited to an information session on Homestead Exemptions and how they save you money on your taxes. Russ Madison, Decatur Revenue and Technology Director, will answer questions about the various exemptions and how to apply on Thursday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St. If you have a neighbor who is a senior citizen and unable to drive to the meeting, please bring them with you.

The deadline to apply for City of Decatur exemptions is April 1 but you are asked to apply by March 15. You will find out about the documentation you will need to provide to obtain these exemptions. You might also be eligible for a Homestead Exemption to reduce your DeKalb County taxes. Please be sure you have applied for those exemptions too.

This information session is presented by Decatur’s Lifelong Community Advisory Board. For more information about the Decatur for a Lifetime initiative or the board, contact leeann.harvey@decaturga.com or 678-553-6548.

Oakhurst will soon have a mural filled with people, flowers, and bees painted by local artist Olive47.  The mural is part of a “Feed A Bee” Public Service Announcement.  The project is designed to bring awareness to the decline in bee populations and will feature the artist creating a mural of people, flowers, and bees.  It will also have people planting flowers which along with the mural will be left behind for the community to enjoy.

The mural will be painted on private property on a wall that faces Harmony Park (on the side of the building with One Step At A Time).  They will build a raised bed on the granite slab and plant flowers that draw pollinators such as bees and butterflies.  This mural is not an advertisement and will not have advertising on it.

The public education campaign associated with the painting and filming of the mural is designed to help people understand the importance of helping feed bees.
