Amanda Thompson's not-so- secret other life!

Amanda Thompson's not-so- secret other life!

I hope all of you had a chance to read the article in last Sunday’s AJC that reported on Decatur’s Planning Director Amanda Thompson’s “other life” as a modern dancer.  Decatur Metro posted about this article last week, but have they actually seen Amanda dance?  I have and I will tell you that Zoetic Dance Ensemble is stunning to watch.  These women are so powerful that they seem to leap into the audience.  No teeny, fragile ballerinas in this group!

Here’s the link to the article and for those folks who meet with Amanda on planning issues, I have a piece of advice – don’t step on her toes, figuratively or literally.

Cheer’s to Decatur’s own “dancing queen”.

Don’t Panic!  A portion of the front wall of Trackside and Fifth Earl will be demolished this evening.  This work is necessary because the fire earlier this year destroyed critical structural components and a segment of the front wall had pulled away from the building and was collapsing.  This retail strip is made up of several individual buildings which were cobbled together over time into a small retail center.  So, while Trackside and Fifth Earl appeared to be in two buildings, they actually occupied at least three individual buildings that had been joined together and then subdivided over the years.  The damaged wall section being demolished includes the far right side of Trackside and the left section of Fifth Earl.  The eastern-most lane of College Avenue adjacent to the building will be closed to traffic from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. as the demolition work is completed.  Plans are still underway to restore the building and reopen the businesses.  The demolition work marks the first step in the reconstruction.

Mayor Floyd addresses GMA

Mayor Floyd addresses GMA

Decatur’s Mayor Bill Floyd was sworn in as President of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) this past weekend in Savannah, GA.  He takes the helm of this statewide 500+ member association at what he called a challenging time for cities.

Mayor Floyd noted that because of the close connection city officials have to their communities, they have the capability to help steer the state in the right direction saying, “We’re the ones that feel the pulse of this state better than any other elected official.”

Two other Decatur officials were elected to the GMA Board of Directors.  Decatur Commissioner Kecia Cunningham was elected to an at-large position, and City Attorney Bryan Downs is serving as president of the City Attorneys Section.

In addition, Decatur resident Jim Finch, deputy commissioner for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), received GMA’s “State Government Service” Award.  The Award is given annually to state employees who exemplify integrity, diligence and energeic service to the citizens of the state.

GMA is based in Atlanta and is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and technical assistance services to its 500 member cities.

Congratulations to all of our Decatur honorees – you do us proud!

homeEdelman Productions is searching for a home in the area for their new Home Makeover show. They will begin filming next month and are accepting applications for the next week. They have selected one home in Decatur and maybe yours could be the second!!

From Alyssa Kaufman at Edelman Productions:

We are currently casting homes and homeowners in the metro Atlanta Area to
be featured on HGTV’s new makeover show.

We are looking for desperate homeowners and their homes that are willing to
be on camera and have their (exterior home) makeover taped for our show –in
return you will get a funded and spectacular makeover from our talented and
professional team.

Homes: Should be the eye sore of the block. Maybe the house is painted
neon yellow, or the paint is peeling, the landscape is overgrown or dead,
the drive way is cracking, the shutters are missing, can’t find the house
numbers, or over time the house has lost its charm and has been stripped or
covered in layers of different architecture styles.

If this is you (or someone on your street) please submit your/their
information right away. All homeowners must be willing to participate.

Bonus: When the eye sore home is selected several other homes on the
street will get “mini” makeovers by our team.

Please submit the following:
1) Photo of the outside of home from street
2) Photo of just the house
3) photo of homeowners
4) name of homeowners
5) cell phone numbers
6) neighborhood & city you live in; including address
7) why your home is the eye sore of the block

Nominate 2 or 3 other neighbors that need “Mini Makeovers” (change front
door, maybe mailbox, house numbers, light fixtures, etc) on the block. These
neighbors must be willing to participate.  Please provide phone numbers.

Please send info to sberry@edelmanproductions.com as soon as possible.

Good luck!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Annual Decatur Beach Party, held this past Friday on the Square. It was the largest crowd ever, and I think everyone who was there had a good time. One of the ways we start off the day preparing for the Beach Party is meeting the dump trucks that drop off the sand at 7 am. Thanks to the Public Works Crew that meets us there and helps to push the sand into the parking spaces. They come back at 2 pm to spread out the sand and create “Decatur Beach”. Tony Kemp and his crew do a great job and seem to enjoy helping make this happen.

The sand is donated by Vulcan Materials, and this year they gave us an extra truck full.

Thanks again to everyone who volunteered or attended and made this another successful Decatur Event!

Richard is one the valets at the Valet Service that if now being offered in downtown Decatur. You can drop off your car, walk easily to any of the shops or restaurants on the Square, and pay only $3.
