Better Mornings Atlanta is hitting the road…they are going on a zip trip…looking for some of the most interesting zip codes in metro Atlanta. On Thursday, April 30 BMA and Corinna Allen will be live in Decatur from 5 – 7 a.m. Yes, I said 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. (that’s morning for all you late-night folks).

They are showcasing everything that makes our community a great place to live, work and play. They are spotlighting our businesses, shops, restaurants, events, and people, throwing in a bit of history and asking people what they love about our community.

How hip is our zip? Let’s show Better Mornings Atlanta by turning out from 5 – 7 a.m. at Parker’s on Ponce, 116 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., and showing our community spirit. The more the merrier. We’ll have free coffee, soft drinks and bagels (maybe even some Watershed cookies & pimento cheese – yum) to wake you up – plus the Rain Barrel Man, an Asian Cajun fashion show, and more. Please join us in showcasing our fabulous community – we need you.

See you Thursday morning!

The City of Decatur, Agnes Scott College, City Schools of Decatur, Decatur Business Association, Georgia Organics, and Oakhurst Community Garden have come together to form the Decatur Agriculture Initiative (DAI) designed to bring together community partners around the issue of growing food locally.

The first step is the creation of a Master Plan that identifies and coordinates existing community-based efforts into one unified plan.  This comprehensive approach should result in providing a variety of agricultural products, including food, which would be available through local producers and markets.

Examples of some possible outcomes might include:  stronger community support for farmers markets, co-operative purchase of environmentally sensitive products, education programs designed for children and youth to be able to plan and support their own gardens, and more.

The possibilities are exciting and all of the partners are looking forward to collaborating on this brand new DAI in Decatur.

I love to shop and I love bargains, so Decatur is the place for me! Walking through Decatur, I have seen  many signs for sales and other items that I think would be perfect for Valentine’s Day gifts.

Whit’s End on Ponce de Leon has deeply discounted their winter items to make room for the new spring merchandise. And let’s face it, this warm weather in February will not last. This is a great opportunity to pick up something new and fresh to wear for the remaining cold weather, or to keep your loved one warm for Valentine’s weekend.

rockit-50-offRockit Boutique on the Square is having a 50% off Winter Merchandise Sale. I can’t wait to wear the new skirt I purchased. It will take me right into Spring! Of course I had to buy some hoop earrings to accessorize.

Boutique Karma on Church Street is also having a sale. Many items in the store are marked down 25 to 80%.  The Boutique has women’s bouti-karma-sign1clothing, shoes, accessories and more. Stop in for a look and I bet you will find an item or two that you want to take home.

Squash Blossom has a great window display wishing you “love” in many languages. I know many women who would love to receive a gift from here. The sign outside says they have received  new HOBO and Free People. Stop in and check it out.squash-blos-window

Both Squash Blossom and Kaleidoscope Boutique have a sale section in the back of the store so if you are looking for more bargains, head to the back. I know, it is hard to make it to the back when so many of the new fashions tempt you!

There are many more shops in Decatur, and if you know of any other sales, please let us know. We will be out and about this week searching for Valentine’s gifts for our loved ones.

Hope to see you around town.

Crosswalk Complete

dscf2110

For those of you who haven’t made your daily run to Starbucks, Brickstore or Sweet Melissa’s yet, here’s a preview of the crosswalk you’ll be using. As mentioned in an earlier post, the E. Ponce de Leon crosswalk was replaced with a new and improved design. The stamped brick material is only slightly raised (so it’s still handicap accessible) and two white lines will be added on either side to make it more visible to drivers.

Has anyone paid for parking on N. McDonough and E. Court Square using their cell phone yet? As mentioned in a previous post, starting this week you have the option of paying the meters on the square with your cell phone. Click on the link below to read more about the system. For those of you who have tried it already, let us know what you think!

Starting this week you’ll be able to pay for parking on N. McDonough and East Court Square with your cell phone. Eric Groft, from StreetSmart, has been out since 7:30 a.m. this morning testing all the meters with his cell phone. We’ll be in testing mode during the next couple of days, but once the new instructions are posted on each meter, all 54 meters on N. McDonough and East Court Square will be ready to accept payments through cell phones.

Decatur is the first municipality to test the Pay-By-Cell service. You’ll still be able to pay with change, but the cell phone option allows you to pay for your meter, get a text message receipt and a reminder when the meter is about to expire all with one quick phone call.

The first time you use the Pay-By-Cell service will be free. If you choose to use the service again, you’ll be asked to register at www.goparknow.com to create an account.

We’ll post more details on the system once all the meters on N. McDonough and East Court Square are live.

First off, my grandsons rock!  Who knew being a grandparent would be so rewarding (besides other grandparents)?  My 2 year old grandson and I spent an afternoon out and about in Decatur.

We visited the newly opened Greene’s Fine Foods   where he tasted his first soft peppermint candy (don’t tell his parents!).  He took a “ride” in the childsize firetruck at Salon Red Kids.  He was mesmerized by Nemo on the small, individual screen and didn’t even squirm while getting his hair cut.  We checked out Hoopla where I had to buy the toy tractor pulling a wagon of animals with the farmer singing an extra short version of Old McDonald Had A Farm…

We finished our day at Little Shop of Stories where we picked up a copy of Pete the Cat and His White Shoes.  I love James Dean (you can find his originals and prints at The Seen Gallery), the artist who did the illustrations.

On the way home we played the CD that comes with the book featuring Eric Litwin, or Mr. Eric as he is known on the Decatur Kids Sing CD’s.  We sang “I love my white shoes” over and over and over and over and over and over.  I gladly left the CD with my daughter, kissed my grandson good-bye, and took the tractor with me.

As I drove home, I began to plan our next Decatur Day.  If you have any ideas for fun things to do with a 2-year old in Decatur, please let me know – in the meantime, I’m checking out the Decatur Mom blog regularly for special listings for grandparents…

Kiosk Fun

One of my favorite things about the wayfinding system is the kiosks on the square. Three out of the four kiosks have a city map on one side and a magnetized bulletin board on the other (the fourth kiosks has a map on both sides).

We use the bulletin boards to announce upcoming special events. Right now you’ll find information on the Concerts on the Square, The Garden Tour, Great Decatur Beer Tasting Festival and the Old House Fair.

I can’t tell you how excited we all get when we see someone looking at the map or reading the posters on the kiosks. I’m not over exaggerating when I say that these are the kind of things that make us happy in the Community & Economic Development department. So go ahead. Check out the kiosks. It’ll make our day.
