First Pint at Leon's

leonsauction

We know everyone is getting excited about Leon’s Full Service and now the owners have given us one more reason to look forward to the opening (which will be Sunday or Monday). They’re auctioning off the right to buy the very first pint at Leon’s with all the proceeds going to the Trackside Tavern/Fifth Earl Employee Fund. If this doesn’t epitomize why Decatur is such a great community, I don’t know what does!

A big thanks to Daren Wang (of the Decatur Book Festival) and The Brickstore guys for thinking this up.

For more details see the posts over at Decatur Metro and In Decatur or click here to start the bidding!

Update from Daren (2/5/09): But wait, there’s more! Immortality is within your grasp! LEON’s will create a custom drink and name it for the winner. Forever more, people will walk into this fine establishment and order up a “Your name here.” “I’ll have a Purdy.” “Give me a double Draper.” “Man, I had one too many Kells last night.” People will be cursing you behind your back for years.”

ken-will-morton1Ken Will Morton will be performing a free show at Twain’s on Thursday, February 5th at 8:30 p.m.

With four releases under his belt, his music has been praised by No Depression, Harp, Paste Magazine, An Honest Tune, American Songwriter, Stomp & Stammer, Southeast Performer, Performing Songwriter, Relix and more.

In June of 2008, Ken Will released two records on the newly formed Rara Avis Records:  Devil In Me is a straight-out rock record, while Kickin’ Out The Rungs is more acoustic based and includes a song he co-wrote with Kristen Hall (ex-Sugarland).    CD reviews have already been secured for Southeast Performer, Georgia Music Magazine, Vintage Guitar, and American Songwriter.

Ken was recently reviewed in Creative Loafing:

“He’s a little bit country and little bit rock’n’roll, a fact reflected on his new releases, Kickin’ Out The Rungs and Devil In Me.   The former works an acoustic vibe that runs from folksy Dylanesque ballads to ambling backwoods roots rock, and the latter mines Morton’s hell-bound predilections with barroom stomps and garagabilly grime and rumble.”

Check out this video for the song “Muscadine Wine” off Kickin’ Out The Rungs.

It was such a beautiful afternoon, that I went for a walk around the Square to see what was going on in Decatur. If the weather stays this nice, it will be a great weekend to get out of the house and walk around downtown. There are some sales going on that you may not want to miss. Unfortunately, the 50% off sale at Squash Blossom is over, but they have another special going on. Buy one item and get another of equal value free- what a deal!

Another store you may want to visit is Vivid, who has items at most every price point, plus has a sale going on!

cod-plate-at-poterry-paceIf you are looking for something fun to do with your family or friends, stop by That Pottery Place on Church Street and paint a one of a kind pottery item. They have a lot of pottery items to choose from. I especially like the City of Decatur logo platter that is on display there. That Pottery Place is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 am until 7 pm, Thursday through Saturday until 8pm and open noon until 6 pm on Sunday. Check out the website www.potteryplacedecatur.com.

Walking down Church Street, I noticed that The Seen Gallery has begun to move in the space next to Two Stix. They are having a “Sneak Preview” of the new space  on Friday, January 23 beginning at 7 pm. I am eager to see the new space and welcome them to the downtown area.

For those of you who will walk to the square and have your pets with you, stop by Worthmore Jewelers. The owners offer free treats for both pets and people, plus have a great inventory of unique jewelry and watches. If you don’t see what you want, they would be happy to order it for you.

Enjoy your weekend in Decatur!

$50 or Less

There’s been a lot of discussion on the local blogs about the common misconception that local boutiques only carry expensive items. Since this topic surfaced, a number of Decatur shop owners have done a great job changing customers’ perceptions. For example, Alexia Gallery’s sign:

alexia-sign_edited-11

Over 700 items under $50?! Not bad for beautiful,  hand-crafted jewelry.

Also, we’re happy to report that  it sounds like we don’t have to convince anyone about the benefits of keeping it local. This season many of Decatur’s shop owners have told us that customers have been more determined than ever to do all their holiday shopping locally. Thanks for the local support, everyone!

Tomorrow evening will be the first Terrific Thursday in December, which means two things:

1.) Santa will be out and about, visiting the shops and handing out candy canes! and…
2.) Two Terrific Thursday shuttles (Cliff buses) will be circling Decatur to take shoppers around town. The route and all ten stops can be found on the map here.

shuttlesigns
Each stop is marked with one of these fancy Shuttle Stop signs. Special Events Coordinator, Cheryl Burnette, is an expert at getting the signs in the ground – in heels no less!

We’re also excited about our brand new Terrific Thursday signs featuring a festive flamingo and penguin (we figured reindeers and polar bears were overused this time of year). Five of these signs will appear around the city every Thursday night until Christmas. Take a picture of you and your family standing by one of these signs, send it to us and we’ll include it on this blog!

Jeff, owner of Whit’s End, is kindly helping us out by taking care of the West Ponce Terrific Thursday sign for the next few weeks. He’ll be placing it outside on his end of the street each Thursday. Can you find the other four? *Hint: check out where Juan and I are standing in the photo above.*

A couple of highlights for this week’s Terrific Thursdays:

Dresscodes is throwing a two year anniversary party with a great art show opening. These events are always a lot of fun and the best part is you can still do some holiday shopping while you’re mingling with the crowd.

One of Decatur’s best kept secrets is Several Dancers Core’s Lunchtime in the Studio series.  If you are looking for a festive (& free) lunch, be one of the first 40 people to enter the studio at 12 p.m. on Friday, December 5.  Lunch is sponsored by Saba, Brick Store Pub, and Starbucks so it is sure to be tasty.

CORE Performance Company will discuss their outreach work performing and giving workshops in the schools, and will show part of their school show “Weaving the World into Flower,” which is based on the full-length work Corazon Abriendo (Heart Opening).

The event is from 12 noon – 1 p.m., admission is free, and lunch is on the house for the first 40 folks.  Several Dancers Core is located at 139 Sycamore Street.

heliotrope-1

I just received an email from Tommy, Marc and Jessica of Heliotrope announcing the store’s 2nd Anniversary party this Saturday,  Nov. 15 starting at 6 p.m. There will be a drawing at the door for discounts from 10-50% and a chance to win a $200 shopping spree. Also, they’ll be hosting local pianist and composer George Skaroulis, and Badda Bing is catering.

A party at Heliotrope sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday evening, so stop by and wish the gang a happy birthday!
