warehousesaleThis is a reminder for all you fashionistas and bargain hunters out there. “The Best Boutique Sale Ever” is coming to Decatur at the Holiday Inn this Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Decatur boutiques, including Boogaloos, Heliotrope, Kaleidoscope, Rockit and Squash Blossom, will be there with sales up to 90% off along with seven other local Atlanta boutiques.

Kaleidoscope’s latest email said they’ll be selling summer pieces from Tulle, Gentle Fawn, Joyous and Free, Modern Amusement, 7 Diamonds and, best of all, Milly – the line that was recently featured in Vogue’s Steal of the Month column.

So let’s do the math: fashionable clothes + bargain prices + supporting local shops + one convenient location = a no brainer. See you there.

I know most Decaturites don’t need much encouragement to shop locally because they understand the value of supporting the local community. And most would agree that our local shops and restaurants make Decatur a great place to work and live. There’s little doubt that local shops and restaurants improve the quality of a community, but it’s hard to quantify that value.

That being said, I just discovered an organization that creatively sums up the quantitative value of shopping locally. It’s called The 3/50 Project. What does it stand for? Pick 3. Spend $50. Save your local economy.

In other words, pick three local businesses that you want to support and spend a total of $50 at those businesses each month. If half the employed population in the nation spent $50 every month in locally owned businesses, it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. For every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays local.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t shop at national chains. Instead, The 3/50 project encourages consummers to spend $50 of their budget each month at three locally owned shops. So next time you need a last minute birthday card or gift, stop by one of Decatur’s giftshops or boutiques.

The July/August Atlanta Now Magazine features 50 Fun Things to See & Do in Atlanta this Summer and Decatur is #45.   Here is what they say:

“Take in the Small Town, City Charm…Just a short MARTA ride east of downtown, Decatur is one of the city’s hippest suburbs, with renovated homes, unique retailers and hot restaurants.  History buffs will enjoy the 1898 Decatur Courthouse and the Historic Cemetery, whose oldest headstone dates to 1827, while shopaholics will love the area’s eclectic galleries and boutiques.  Eateries include Watershed, co-owned by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers.  The rock duo had their start at nearby Eddie’s Attic, still one of Atlanta’s top venues for up-and-coming acoustic acts.”

Many thanks to writer Anya Martin for including us!  Atlanta Now is the Official Visitors Guide of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Iberian Pig Logo w outlineWalking back from lunch today we noticed some “action” in the old Sage Restaurant space could not resist peeking in to see what was going on. We had the pleasure of meeting Nancy Castellucci. Nancy and her family will be opening a new restaurant, The Iberian Pig, in the space. The Castellucci Family owns Sugo, which is located in three sites around Atlanta, and are very excited to be expanding to Decatur with a new concept.  The Family has been in the restaurant business for a couple of generations.

The Iberian Pig will feature slow roasted pork as well as a plethora of other items. They are busily creating a new menu for the restaurant and I, for one, look forward to dining there.  One of their sons is a somelier, so the wine list will be awesome as well.  (Of course we had to to ask about the wine! ) They hope to be open by the end of August. If interested, you can visit their website to find more information www.sugorestaurant.com.

Welcome to Decatur Castelluccis!!

This week, one of my most favorite restaurants to eat for lunch will be closed for the 4th of July Holiday week, Pastries A Go Go located at 235 Ponce de Leon Place.  Pastries A Go Go has the best biscuits, bacon, chicken salad, croissants, and cookies.  Be sure to visit them when you and Pastries return from vacation on Wednesday, July15.

Catherine and I dropped by Noodle on Ponce today to have lunch and were delighted to see that they have a new menu. Lots of the “old” items are still there, but they have some new salads, a “daily special” and desserts. We tried one of the new desserts, a Ginger Tirimisu, and it was wonderful!

Noodle serves lunch daily until 4 pm, so stop by and tell them Cheryl and Catherine sent you…enjoy!
