There are a million and one things to do this weekend in Decatur and that’s not just because the Decatur Arts Festival has a full program of events for the next two days (see the official program here online for evidence). Our beloved shops and restaurants are also getting in to the festival spirit and offering their own little mini festivals. I like to them of them as fringe festivals.

Heliotrope Home

Tonight, of course, it all kicks off with the Decatur ArtWalk where you can discover new artists at participating shops and restaurants. Alexia Gallery is hosting a wabi-sabi-minded jeweler, the Art Institute’s evening exhibition features student and faculty work, Lampe-Farley Communications (located above Garlic Thai and New Orleans Sno Balls) is showing off work by local artist Gail Vogels, and Mingei World Arts has invited an artist who creates his artwork with sand, wood, spices and wax to the shop – just to name a few. I encourage you to put on your walking shoes , head downtown and see what you discover.

Other shop/restaurant happenings this weekend:

Stop by Rose Squared Gallery this Saturday to see the puppets of Puppatoons, created master puppeteer Liz Vitale.

Green Mosaics, a new boutique offering unique child, pet care products, organic personal care, natural home care and women’s apparel is celebrating its grand opening on May 28 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be food, music, giveaways, modeling and more!

Greene’s Fine Foodswill be open until 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday for festival goers. Stop by for some chocolate covered strawberries and ice cream.

Jewelry artist Amy Bubes will be showing off her new line of hand-made, one-of-a-kind pieces and jeweler Alp Sagnak will be in store on Friday to show off his modern Turkey-inspired designs.

Decatur CD is hosting an in store performance tonight (that’s in 2 hours!) given by Doria Roberts at 7 p.m. and complimentary beer will be available to all ArtWalkers of age.

The Seen Gallery will be hosting two designers of casual apparel on Saturday and Sunday. Timeless Tees was created by two local Georgia artists who create timeless shirts that have just the right fit. Rep Your Hood is a grass-roots Atlanta endeavor that featuring neighborhoods including Decatur.

Heliotrope is participating in the Friday ArtWalk while simultaneously celebrating Fab Friday! Check out the shop’s Facebook page here.

Goodness, this post is long! There’s no doubt that this is going to be one of the best weekends in Decatur ever!

TOMs, the shoe copy that donates a pair of shoes every time you buy a pair, is hosting One Day Without Shoes today, April 5, 2011. So take off your shoes for the day and remember that in many developing countries, children have to walk barefoot for miles to school, clean water and medical help.

Both Squash Blossom and Little Shop of Stories are celebrating One Day Without Shoes.

Bring this coupon with you between 3-6 p.m., leave your shoes at home, and get 10% off your Squash Blossom purchase. The boutique will be selling TOMs (including kids and mens sizes) plus celebrating the day with snacks, music and a bedazzler (for your TOMs, not your feet).

You can also get 10% off at Little Shop of Stories if you come in without shoes. The 11 a.m. storytime will include stories about helping others, doing good in the community and about feet.

…or at least that is what the sign says.

I’ll admit, I have been giddy with excitement about Decatur getting a Jimmy Johns. The sandwich chain originally started out on college campuses (which is where I first found them, Go Mizzou!) and ever since my freshman year, it has been love at first bite!

Their sandwiches are delicious, they are super fast, they are open late, and best of all…THEY DELIVER!

Since the word on the street was that Jimmy Johns finally opened at 3pm yesterday, I loaded up the baby and decided we were having sandwiches for dinner. The store is clean and bright, the staff is really friendly, and I was in and out in under 5 minutes.

My favorite menu items? The Country Club and the Beach Club…but you’ll have to go to decide for yourself!

We might not dye our river green like some cities – mostly because we don’t really have a river in Decatur – but that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style! In fact, Decaturites don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Week!

To get the week started right, I recommend that you stop by Decatur Screen Print. They’re located on the second floor of the Garlic Thai/ New Orleans Sno Ball Cafe building at 340 W. Ponce. They have tons of green shirts printed with St. Pat’s-appropriate designs.

The shop also has some St. Patrick’s Day accessories:

Katie Abel, City Events Coordinator = Never intimidated by holiday flair

And here are several opportunities where you can wear said shirts and accessories:

The Marlay House
March 12 – St. Patrick’s Day kick off celebration. Bagpipers at 2 p.m., Irish Dancers at 4:30 p.m., live Irish Music 6:30-9:30 p.m. and more pipers at 8 p.m.
March 15 – Free musical performance by one of the greatest uillean pipers alive, Paddy Keenan. Watch a YouTube clip of him here as proof of his greatness.
March 16 – Celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve with an Irish beer pairing dinner.
March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day! Live music, dancers and the pub’s new piano will get some play time.

Steinbeck’s
Join the Decatur Education Foundation at Steinbeck’s on Thursday, March 17 for an afternoon of St. Patty’s Day fun including bouncing, temporary tattoos, live music and more. The pub will offer kid-friendly food in addition to its regular yummy menu. Festivities run from 3-6 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Foundation. From 4 until 10 p.m. come for free live music, corned beef, Irish bangers and mash, fish and chips and Guinness.

Ale Yeah
The guys at Ale Yeah beer market will be running specials on everything Irish beginning March 14.  Beer from Ireland as well as Irish style beers will be 10% off next week.

McGowan’s Oakhurst Pub
Oakhurst’s newest pub will be celebrating on March 17 with live traditional Irish music led by Mick Kinney on the pub’s front patio and Irish fare: shepherd’s pie and corned beef with cabbage.

Piece of Cake
Call ahead to order your very own Green Velvet Layer Cake. It’s just like Piece of Cake’s popular red velvet cake, but it’s green – yum! Also, if you stop by the store on St. Patrick’s Day wearing green, you’ll receive a FREE key lime cupcake.

Badda Bing
Stop by for a delicious St. Pat’s lunch on March 17. The lunch menu includes corned beef brisket, parsley potatoes, beer braised cabbage, baby shepard’s pie, salmon croquette, whole grain mustard sauce and Irish soda bread.

Kismet Now Open

Kismet, a jewelry store next to Taste on Church Street, just opened today. I popped in to meet the owners, Tony and Sylvia Gezgin, and tried a few pieces on. The scorpion and elephant (its ears and tusk move!) rings caught my eye.

And I had to take a photo of this giant owl ring:

Tony and Sylvia are incredibly friendly. Stop by and welcome them to the neighborhood. If you stop in soon, you might be able to snag a piece of Turkish Delight – they have two open boxes on the counter for visitors – yum!
