Slide the City 2.0

slidethecity

Slide the City has announced that they will bring the slide back on Saturday, September 12th. We understand that dates falls during the CSD fall break, but that was the only weekend open for both the City of Decatur and Slide the City. If you have tickets that you were not able to use last time, they are valid and you do not have to register again. If you have tickets that you cannot use, please email info@slidethecity.com to either transfer the tickets to someone else or to get a full refund.

We have also decided to move the location of the slide from W. Ponce de Leon Ave over to McDonough Street to reduce the impact on businesses and on traffic. Also, as it turns out, the hill is slightly steeper which will make for a really fun slide.

If you did not get a chance to buy tickets for the slide last time, Slide the City will put more tickets up for sale on Monday.  Check their website for more details. Also, don’t forget to use the promo code DBA15 to get a discount on your tickets and to help support the Decatur Business Association!

Just in from DeKalb County:

Dear (Medlock) Area Residents and Businesses,
We are writing to inform you that Sony Pictures is producing a film here in N. Decatur. We
will be filming a scene on Thursday August 6th at N. Decatur Presbyterian Church.
In order to properly capture the emotion of the scene, we’ve requested to use intermittent
traffic control on Scott Blvd. Care will be taken not to block area residents or business
access to these streets. We’ll have off-duty Dekalb Police Officers with us for public safety
and to help keep traffic moving smoothly. They may ask vehicles to hold up very briefly at
times.
We’ll have Dekalb Police Officers to assist at the intersection of N. Decatur Rd and Scott
Blvd to make sure traffic flows smoothly.

Sony Pictures has acquired permission from GDOT for Intermittent Traffic Control (ITC) for no longer than 5 minutes each occurrence from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. along State Route 8 (Scott Boulevard) on Thursday, August 6, 2015. Please be prepared for possible traffic delays

FigmentLogo_Square_GreenBlueFIGMENT Decatur, a free, participatory art event is tomorrow from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the Agnes Scott College campus.

Bring your refillable water bottle and come prepared to take part in the following projects:

May I See Your Papers, Please? By Beacon Dance (Dance) – Performance scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

The Paper Project, is an experimental installation and performance work bringing together multiple art forms to address the core theme of identity.  In May I see your papers, please?, 5 movement artists will engage and entertain during the course of this 20 minute work.  Audiences will participate in a variety of ways in the performance, and will contribute to the performance sound score as well as the thematic content of the movement vocabulary.

Trapezoid by Jay Myers (Visual Art)

The project has two 3’x4′ panels, one of which is an interactive magnetic board which allows participants to manipulate words on the panel.

The Soapbox by Jessica Seales (Installation/Performance)

The project is a roughly 3 1/2 feet wide by 2 1/2 feet tall wooden box, built to stand alone and support a person’s weight. The box is painted with the word “SOAP” on all sides (like a traditional soapbox) and has a small megaphone chained to it (so the megaphone doesn’t disappear). The goal of the project is to encourage people to use the soapbox for whatever topic they see fit – serious, silly, happy, sad, etc – to tell their story.

Tell Me Who I Am…A 50 Year Journey by Christy Amador (Visual Art)

I’m a Woman, Artist, Professional, wife and mom who is quickly approaching 50 and I still don’t really know who I am. I will actually encourage visitors to become my “mirror” by inviting them to ask me ANY 3 questions and using that information to paint their perception of me on a large “canvas” (4’ x 8” piece of plywood, on a secure stand). It will initially painted white, with a simple, life-sized silhouette/outline of me, and I will be seated next to it (wearing something monochromatic).

JoeKingATL by Joe Dreher (Visual Art)

Participants will have the opportunity to crown themselves with the joekingatl crown with this interactive sculpture and photo booth and can make a digital record of their participation in this event that will then be incorporated into a continually evolving project.

3D printed Spirograph by Decatur Makers (Activity)

Use an oversized 3D printed spirograph to make your own designs to take home.

Cornhole by Decatur Makers (Activity)

Play our trebuchet corn hole game.

Dance-A-Roke by Amanda Thompson (Dance)

You pick the song and dance out the lyrics. We provide fun props, costumes and music.

A Mad Tea Party by Casie Yoder (Activity)

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, there’s PLENTY of room at this tea party. Whether Dormouse, March Hare or Mad Hatter, you’ll pick a drinking vessel and engage in madness.

Eco Sculptures by Layi Taylor (Sculpture)

Eco-Sculptures, where others create sculptures from recyclable dry-cleaning hangers.

Abstract Foot Art by Layi Taylor (Visual Art)

Use shoe covers and water colour paints to create abstract art on a large canvas.

Peacock Tail by John D’ski (Visual Art)

This poor peacock needs some new tail feathers. Draw them!

Maze of Dreams by Planners (Activity)

Think about a time you were lost, how did you find your way out? What alludes you? What is waiting in your imagination to be expressed? Walk through a life size maze of a wall of plastic ribbons and attach your answers/images/dreams to the walls. Read the answers of those that have gone before you.

Laugh with Me by Asif Lakhani (Performance)

Join in with Asif as he tells some hilarious jokes.

Due to the ongoing issues with a DeKalb County water main break the decision has been made to shut down today’s Slide the City event by 1 p.m. Ticket holders will be contacted by Slide the City in the near future about refunds, etc.

Because many buildings are without air conditioning (A/C system requires water),  cooling centers are in the process of being established around the city. As soon as those locations are determined (we want to make sure they have water and functioning restrooms) an update will be posted here.

DeKalb County continues to tweet updates via @ItsInDeKalb.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Decatur Business Association, the DBA along with the City of Decatur has decided to shake up our traditional summer event, the Decatur Beach Party, and make a huge SPLASH this summer. For one day only, there will be a 1000 foot long water slide in the middle of W. Ponce de Leon Ave, stretching from Clairemont down to Ponce de Leon Place.

Here are some important details to note:

  • W. Ponce de Leon will be closed between Clairemont Ave and Fairview Ave at 3am on Saturday, July 25th until midnight that same day.
  •  Decatur Police will be present at road closures as well as roaming the event site
  • Hours of the event are 10am-9pm. We expect over 4000 people to attend this event
  • We have not allowed additonal vendors or foodtrucks to attend this event in the hopes that you, our local businesses will benefit greatly
  • There will be music along the Slide for most of the day. We will end the music at 8pm on Saturday evening
  • Police located at the barricade at W. Ponce and Fairview will allow local traffic inside the barricade if they are going to a business whose driveway is not blocked by the Slide
  • Police will also allow residents who reside in the 315 and 335 buildings to access their buildings

We encourage people to walk, ride bikes, to take Marta to Decatur. If you need to drive, please note the various parking decks on the map

Several of our favorite Decatur businesses will be hosting patio parties and specials on Saturday. Make plans now to hang out at Cafe Lily, T. Mac, and Ted’s Montana Grill-all who have specials planned for the day!
