Reminder: the City of Decatur is hosting Neighborhood Clean-up Days on Saturdays in March-June, to allow residents to dispose of bulky materials that would not normally be placed in pay-as-you-throw bags. Every street in the City has been assigned to one Saturday. Visit the Neighborhood Cleanup Days page on the city website for detailed instructions and specified dates for each street.

Collection for May 19 will take place in the following neighborhood:

Ansley Street
Greenwood Avenue
Greenwood Place
Evans Drive
Kings Highway
Adams Street (100 to 500 block)
South McDonough Street (100 to 500 block)
West College Avenue (100 to 700 block)
West Dougherty Street
West Davis Street
West Hancock Street
East Hancock Street
East Davis Street
College Place

All items to be collected should be placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. This ensures that we do not have to rerun routes for late set-outs. Collections run until 3:30 p.m., or until finished, whichever is sooner.

The online survey allowing residents and other stakeholders to comment on their preferences and concerns related to the first round of draft options for the former United Methodist Children’s Home property will be closing soon.

The City of Decatur has upgraded and expanded the Tornado Outdoor Warning Siren System adding two new sirens, one at to the Children’s Home property and one between the Decatur Police Department and Ebster Pool. The new system will be tested tomorrow, Thursday, May 10 at 5 pm. The test should last no more than 3 minutes. THIS IS ONLY A TEST.

The impact

Blount Construction will be resurfacing the intersection of Church Street and E. Ponce de Leon Avenue starting Thursday, May 10 at 8:30 am and will be completed by Friday, May 11 at 6 pm.

How to manage

Traffic will be maintained at all times through lane shifts or one-way traffic with Flaggers, though delays should be expected. Commerce Drive on both the east and west sides of downtown provides for optional routes of travel.

With the City Schools of Decatur new 3-4-5 Academy on Talley Street and the Avondale Transit Oriented Development on Sams Street, the southeast portion of the City of Decatur is entering a transformative period.

The community is invited to attend the first public meeting for a Transportation Improvement Study. This is a joint project between the City of Decatur and the City Schools of Decatur to study the transportation network in the southeast area of Decatur to identify improvements to accommodate new developments and future changes. To begin the study, we want to hear from you!

Public Input Open House

When: Tuesday, May 15, 6 – 8 pm

Where: City of Decatur Public Works Building, 2635 Talley Street

The study includes identifying improvements to address all modes of travel for: pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles that navigate through and around the corridor.  This public meeting is an opportunity for you to share your concerns and suggestions in an open house format. Come by at your convenience. There is no formal presentation.

In addition to this initial public meeting, an online survey will be available for the public May 16-May 31. We look forward to hearing from you.

Wednesday, May 2, Decatur will host its first Open Office Hour of the year with Mayor Patti Garrett from 7 – 8 p.m. Mayor Garrett will speak for approximately 15-20 minutes on the topic of tensions between modes of transportation in the City, including the steps the City is taking to improve safety on our streets and sidewalks as well as how to move people, bikes and cars safely and efficiently through Decatur. She will also talk about how the City Commission and staff are addressing the tensions between transportation modes and working with other government agencies such as DeKalb County and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
