If you have a lack of water or A/C (or perhaps both) and need a cool place with working restrooms, please go to the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St. or Ebster Gym in the Beacon Municipal Center (at the corner of Trinity & Electric Ave – entrance is on Electric Ave.). Both locations have confirmed that they currently have water and air conditioning.

Slide the City will be CLOSED by 1 p.m.
Posted in Events on July 25, 2015 | Leave a Comment »
Due to the ongoing issues with a DeKalb County water main break the decision has been made to shut down today’s Slide the City event by 1 p.m. Ticket holders will be contacted by Slide the City in the near future about refunds, etc.
Because many buildings are without air conditioning (A/C system requires water), cooling centers are in the process of being established around the city. As soon as those locations are determined (we want to make sure they have water and functioning restrooms) an update will be posted here.

The latest from DeKalb County is that crews are working to bring water pressure back up right now. Once the system is back to full pressure it should remain that way until midnight when pressure will be reduced again so repairs can be made overnight.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Work Continues on Water Main Break
Another drop in pressure may occur overnight
DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County continues work on a 48-inch main transmission line at Henderson Mill and Evans Road, after the hydrant was damaged by a mowing crew working in the area.
Pressure was reduced overnight to get control of the flow of water. Pressure was restored to the system at 3:30 a.m., however the leak is still present.
DeKalb Watershed crews are engaging a contractor to assist us overnight. Similar to last night, DeKalb water customers may have a short interruption in water pressure while a valve in the line is closed to stop the current breach. At that time, crews will insert a new valve in the fire line to stop the leak.
The 48-inch transmission main is approximately 20 feet underground in an area with gas, power and other utilities present. These obstacles require substantial coordination and care.
No boil water advisory is indicated at this time. The system will continue to have additional testing to assure the water supply remains safe.
Known for its business and education hub, growing international community and natural wonders, DeKalb County Government is administered by Interim Chief Executive Officer Lee May and legislative policy is set by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. DeKalb County is home to more than 700,000 residents.

Lena Stevens representing Decatur in Laos
Posted in Community on July 24, 2015 | Leave a Comment »
City employee Lena Stevens leaves today for two weeks in Laos as part of the ICMA Professional Fellows Exchange Program. In May, the city hosted two international fellows, Thongvone Sosamphan from Laos and Ngan Ngyuen from Vietnam.
Lena will be writing about her experience in Laos for the ICMA blog. Here’s an excerpt from her first blog post:
Why Am I Going?
Perspective is key to keeping your eye on the ball when working for local government. It’s not hard to find examples of government employees who have lost sight of what matters as a public servant. People everywhere have the same needs- food, clean water, safe shelter, jobs, education. I can’t wait to see another corner of the world where these needs are met in ways that might be dramatically different from the service delivery strategies I’m used to.
Laos (pronounced ‘Lao’ – the ‘s’ is silent) is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Its neighbors are Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia and China. Lao is the official language of Laos.

The Slide is finally here!

After months of talk and preparation, tomorrow is the big day for Slide the City! Not only will it be super fun and a cool way to spend a day in Decatur, but it is a big fundraiser for the Decatur Business Association. The DBA hosts so many free community events all year long, these funds really help make that happen. (Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Easter Egg Hunt, the Bonfire and Marshmallow Roast, as well as help fund the MLK Jr Service Project and the 4th of July Fireworks.)
So even if you don’t have tickets to ride the slide, come on out and enjoy the festivities. T.Mac, Ted’s Montana Grill, and Cafe Lily are all planning big patio parties that are open to everyone.
It will be hot so don’t forget to bring sunblock and a water bottle. And speaking of water bottles, the Environmental Sustainability Board will be out at the event refilling your water bottles for free!
We can’t wait to see you #slidedecatur

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Decatur Business Association, the DBA along with the City of Decatur has decided to shake up our traditional summer event, the Decatur Beach Party, and make a huge SPLASH this summer. For one day only, there will be a 1000 foot long water slide in the middle of W. Ponce de Leon Ave, stretching from Clairemont down to Ponce de Leon Place.
Here are some important details to note:
- W. Ponce de Leon will be closed between Clairemont Ave and Fairview Ave at 3am on Saturday, July 25th until midnight that same day.
- Decatur Police will be present at road closures as well as roaming the event site
- Hours of the event are 10am-9pm. We expect over 4000 people to attend this event
- We have not allowed additonal vendors or foodtrucks to attend this event in the hopes that you, our local businesses will benefit greatly
- There will be music along the Slide for most of the day. We will end the music at 8pm on Saturday evening
- Police located at the barricade at W. Ponce and Fairview will allow local traffic inside the barricade if they are going to a business whose driveway is not blocked by the Slide
- Police will also allow residents who reside in the 315 and 335 buildings to access their buildings
We encourage people to walk, ride bikes, to take Marta to Decatur. If you need to drive, please note the various parking decks on the map
