“In 1972, a group of talented musicians came together to form the Southern Rock Band, Atlanta Rhythm Section. During the next 35 years the band would earn gold and platinum records, as well as a place in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.”
One of the original members of that band is Decatur’s own Barry Bailey! Barry began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and while attending Decatur High School, joined a small garage band. The rest is history.
Barry will be returning to Decatur on Friday, June 19, for the annual Decatur Beach Party. Mayor Bill Floyd will be presenting Mr. Bailey a key to the City as well as reading a proclamation declaring June 19, 2009 as “Barry Bailey Day”. The presentation will be made at the Main Stage on the MARTA Plaza at 7:45pm, before the band begins to play.
For more information or to buy tickets for Beach Party, visit www.decaturdba.com. Tickets are $6.50 in advance, $10 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free, limit two with each paying adult.
See you on Decatur Beach!
I can’t find any information listing the bands that will play at the Beach Party. Is the Atlanta Rhythm Section playing?
Rod, The Reputations will be playing from 5-8 p.m. on the Community Bandstand and then Terry Lee & the GTs are playing from 8-midnight on the new MARTA Plaza main stage.
It is high time a musician of Barry Bailey’s stature is to be honored and recognized by his own townspeople. Barry is idolized by many guitarists and other musicians for his incredible talent. It is so rare that we hear about him anymore. My hat is off to whomever organized this event.
When was ARS inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? NEVER HAPPENED!
Get your facts straight, “Cheryl”!
Cheryl Had her facts straight Tom. She said the Georgia Music hall of Fame. Easy Boy
Thanks for pionting out my error Tom- I meant the GA Music Hall of Fame- it is fixed now! That’s what I get for typing and thinking too fast 🙂
Also, there will be a band in the Children’s Boardwalk area: The Sizzle Hiss Pop Band
Barry is one of the FEW guitarists, that can be identified just by hearing his playing. (by the way I can think of only two others) his tone and musicality may be unparalelled in pop music. He also used to live in Decatur.
Congrats Barry
Kind of mean spirited there ,Tom.
How exciting to hear that Barry’s being honored. He has always been one of my premier guitar influences. I was lucky enough as John Raineys’ little brother to attend some of the early sessions with Mylon LeFevre and meet Barry pre-ARS! I’m trying to find a friend here in Dothan to go up Fri. I don’t have a GPS and if possible would appreciate any directions to the wonderful event. He is TRULY one of my guitar heroes and a great guy!
Nothing is better than seeing the smile on your face, country life certainly agrees with you. Congratulations my friend on your special day, I am so happy that your talent and contribution to the entertainment world is being recognized. You are incredible! Looking forward to hearing more of your work in the future.
All my best! Cindy
Barry Bailey showed me what i wanted to do with my life a long time ago……thank you Barry……..I wouldnt trade Georgia’s Barry Bailey for 10 Eric Clapton’s even if they threw in a Jimmy Page and 3 Van Halens….BARRY BAILEY IS AN ALIEN FROM ANOTHER WORLD…when he makes his Goldtop sing!!!….he belongs to Georgia FOREVER!!! God Bless Ya Barry….Your My Mentor!
Barry Johnson
One of the best! Incredible R&B player in the 60’s. Old Auburn Ave. players know who Barry Bailey is. He was as good as at gets.
God Bless Him!
Glad to see Barry has a farm again. I remember when Sugarloaf Blvd. opened and he had to move.
Long live ARS!
I first saw Barry play in 1966. I was a budding guitar player and was blown away by Barry’s style and finesse that day. I didn’t know you could do that on a guitar. Really! Of all the guitar heroes in the world, Barry Bailey is and always will be my number one influence. I think he is the best there is, period. Thanks to the legendary Barry Bailey, I’ve had a great musical career as a guitarist. Thanks Barry. Love ya’ man.
Dennis, who was Barry playing with back in 1966?
Kinda looks like clapton in the 1st picture….That look only comes with guitar wisdom, long after guitar frenzy on the brink of madness. HA HA I’m right there with ya…Barry has had a big influence on my style. People think it’s my style but I’m quick to give credit where it’s due. Finally got a CD of ARS’ 1st album. I literally wore out the vinyl. Certainly in my 10 ten albums of al times. Would love to hear a Barry Bailey solo project ;-}
Barry Bailey…..The greatest ever. period….end of story!
REALLY BILL!
I’m with Bill Parker – Barry is the most unrecognized guitar player and probably the most talented I’ve ever seen!
Would love to book Barry at my bar! Best southern rock guitarist.
Barry Bailey one of the very best and most unrecognized guitar players of all time. Such a TOUCH on that guitar. I first saw him with ARS at The Roxy in Hollywood before any of their hits. He blew me away. The Live ARS (why is it unavailable?!?!?!?) still one of my all time favorites.
It’s true he is one of the great ones!!!The first time I ever heard him play was back in the mid 60″s at Avondale high school, with a band called The Vons.I myself went to elementary school with him at Ponce De Leon elementary, and was also In the same cub scout troup as Barry……….The earth was young and so were we!!!!!!!
Tom Brand.
