The weather has a feeling of Spring so get outside and enjoy yourself in Decatur this weekend.

Saturday morning, Decatur Active Living presents “Touch-a-Truck” Day from 10 am until 1 pm in the Callaway Building Parking lot located on the corner of Trinity and Commerce Drive. More details in previous post.

The ING Marathon will be coming through Decatur on Sunday so come out and join our official Cheering Section. New location this year: we will line the streets of in front of the Old Courthouse to cheer on the runners as they come down Ponce de Leon and turn onto Clairemont. I will be on the square at 7 am and have lots of pom-poms, cow bells and other cheering “necessities”. The Marching Abominables will be joining us this year, so come out and join the fun as we compete to win the “Neighborhood Challenge”.

Decatur High School presents Hamlet, which runs Friday and Saturday night at the new DHS Performing Arts Center. The show begins at 7:30 pm and tickets are available at the door for $8. I saw the show last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Walk or bike around downtown Decatur or Oakhurst. Grab a coffee or lunch to go and enjoy it on the Square or in Harmony Park; or dine at one of the many fine restaurants. Bet those patios will be open and hopping this weekend.

Stop in at one of your favorite boutiques and buy something to put a “spring” in your step or wardrobe.

The ING Georgia Marathon will be coming through the City of Decatur this Sunday, March 21 and as in past years we will be competing in the Neighborhood Challenge. Six neighborhood organizations along the course will cheer for the participants at Neighborhood Cheering Zones and compete for award grants for neighborhood fitness initiatives.  The City will use the prize to begin a new walking program, Walk There, Decatur!

Join us  on Ponce de Leon Avenue along the sidewalks north of the Old Courthouse Square. We will have some “cheering” supplies, but feel free to bring along noise makers to spur the runners on! We will begin gathering at 7 am; the runners will be in Decatur by 7:30 am. And of course, wear orange!

Grab some coffee and let’s show the runners that Decatur rocks!

Community Volunteer Becky Smith Cheers on the Runners

The ING Georgia Marathon will be coming through Decatur again this year on Sunday, March 21st. We will hold a Community Information Meeting on Monday, February 8 at 6 pm in the City Commission Meeting Room in City Hall.

All members of the community are invited to attend the meeting. This is a great time to sign up to volunteer, get information about the cheering section and water stations, and have your questions answered by the Marathon staff.

The City of Decatur will compete for the best cheering section once again, but this year we have a new location. We will cheer the runners on from the sidewalks along Ponce de Leon in front of the Old Courthouse. The City will also have three water stations as in 2009 and would love to have as many volunteers as possible.

If you would like to participate and cannot attend the meeting, please contact Cheryl Burnette at 678-553-6573 or email cheryl.burnette at decaturga.com.

ing-logoThe 3rd annual ING Georgia Marathon will be coming through the City of Decatur on Sunday, March 29th. The City of Decatur and the organizers of the marathon are holding a Community Meeting on Thursday, February 5th from 6 until 7pm in the Commission Room of Decatur City Hall. The meeting will inform citizens of route details, volunteer opportunities, and the Neighborhood Challenge. The first year of the marathon Decatur won first place for the best cheering section and a donation of $10,000 to youth sports programs. The second year Decatur won second place and a donation of $5000 to youth programs. No reason why we can’t win again and make it three in a row!

Part of our effort both years included a series of “Burma Shave” type signs posted along the route. We continue to expand the effort and need your help. Submit your ideas for Burma Shave rhymes to lyn.menne@decaturga.com.

For those who cannot attend the meeting, but would like to stay informed, send your email address to cheryl.burnette@decaturga.com for updates and volunteer opportunites. We look forward to seeing a lot of Decaturites at our official cheering station in front of Fellini’s Pizza on March 29th.
