The City of Decatur has two new firefighter/EMTs who have life paths that have crossed many times. Francisco Albizu and Justin Sardine went to the same high school in Miami at the same time, but never met. Both have held jobs in different fields, with one being that Albizu worked for Costco and Sardine worked for Sams Wholesale club in the same competitive territory of Kendall, FL at the same time. Still, they never met. Years later, their paths crossed again, here in the City of Decatur. Sardine and Albizu are new EMT/firefighters working on the same shift at Fire Station #1. Both have been married 15 years and have two children each.

Their paths crossed many times, but the City of Decatur finally brought them together as co-workers and friends!

I was at Fire Station # 1 this morning and heard the chatter and giggling of little children. Captain Meyers was showing a class from Peachtree Academy in Avondale Estates a Fire Engine after their tour of the station. They were so cute, I couldn’t resist taking their photo. This is just one of the many activities that our wonderful firefighters do when they are not putting out fires, answering emergency medical calls and keeping the City of Decatur safe. Pictured are Captain Meyers and Francisco Albizu with the class and their teachers.

One of the fun things that I get to do in my position as Special Events Coordinator is to go “behind the scenes” to watch and learn how things are done. So, just in case you are wondering about the set up for a fireworks display, here are some photos from “behind the scenes”!
First, Drew Strauss and his crew bring the fireworks to the top of the Dekalb County deck:

Julie Sammons works on placing the shells in the racks.

Here members of the “crew” pack the shells that will be used for the Grand Finale. Notice how they are tied together to give the “finale effect”.

Firefighters are on top of the deck to ensure the safety of the crew as well as the buildings around the deck. Hoses and firefighters are ready to go into action.

The “Grand Finale” going off is always exciting!

After the show is over, the “shooters” walk the perimeter of the deck to the cheers of their “fans”.

Much thanks to our wonderful pyrotechnics crew for putting on a safe display and to our wonderful Firefighters for ensuring the safety of our citizens. Putting on the 4th of July is a collaboration of Special Events with the Police and Fire Department. Thanks to everyone for a great holiday!

Retiring Fire Chief Jerry Malone

Retiring Fire Chief Jerry Malone

Fire Chief Jerry Malone has retired after 35 years of service to the City of Decatur. The City  held a “Retirement Ceremony” for Chief Malone yesterday and there were many tears shed.

Mayor Floyd, Tony Parker, Peggy Merriss and other city officials were on hand to thank Chief Malone for his many years of outstanding service to the City of Decatur. There were also many firefighters on hand to wish the Chief well and give him a send off.

In the Decatur tradition, Malone was presented with his badge, his helmet, and the valued Play Pipe Trophy. The Fire Department also presented him with a shadowbox containing his badges, patches and other memories.

Jerry’s family members were in attendance, and his wife Sherry was given flowers as a “thank you” for sharing her husband with the city for so many years.

We will all miss Jerry very much.

Two of the City of Decatur’s long time Firefighters, Roosevelt Strong and Larry Pettit, are retiring. Roosevelt Strong came to Decatur 21 years ago from the City of Eufaula, Alabama and Larry Pettit has been with the department for 36 years. Both have been a great asset to the City of Decatur. City Manager Peggy Merriss presented them with Service Pins, and the Fire Department presented them with their Badges, helmet and a “Play Pipe Nozzle Trophy”. The Play Pipe Nozzle is the original nozzle used by firefighters.

Both Strong and Pettit also received framed photos of their shift.
