Thanks to everyone who participated in the Annual Decatur Beach Party, held this past Friday on the Square. It was the largest crowd ever, and I think everyone who was there had a good time. One of the ways we start off the day preparing for the Beach Party is meeting the dump trucks that drop off the sand at 7 am. Thanks to the Public Works Crew that meets us there and helps to push the sand into the parking spaces. They come back at 2 pm to spread out the sand and create “Decatur Beach”. Tony Kemp and his crew do a great job and seem to enjoy helping make this happen.

The sand is donated by Vulcan Materials, and this year they gave us an extra truck full.

Thanks again to everyone who volunteered or attended and made this another successful Decatur Event!

The annual Decatur Beach Party will be held this Friday, June 19 from 5 p.m. until midnight in downtown Decatur. The Reputations play Beach music at the Community Bandstand beginning at 5 p.m. and Terry Lee and the GTs begin playing at 8 p.m. on the Main Stage.

The organizing committee has made some changes this year, and both the sand area and the Boardwalk Games will be on Ponce de Leon Avenue, renamed “Ponce Fun Pier”. The main stage will be on the MARTA Plaza. This year’s event also includes Douglas Brake and The Sizzle Pop Fizz Band beginning at 5 p.m. on the “pier”.

Other new fun for 2009 includes a Bunji Jump for the children and a Photobooth where you can get your souvenir photo made.

T-shirts with the new design will be on sale at the Souvenir tent for $15.

The Decatur Beach Party is a fundraiser for the Decatur Business Association.  Money raised helps the DBA to put on free events throughout the year, including the Concerts on the Square, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the Bonfire and Marshmallow roast.

Tickets are $6.50 in advance and can be purchased at www.decaturdba.com or at Decatur CD. Tickets at the gate are $10. Children 12 and under are free, limited to two free children with each paying adult. Please leave your coolers, pets and picnic baskets at home.

See you on the “beach”!

Children gather to hear Douglas Brake

Children gather to hear Douglas Brake

Today was the last Blue Sky Concert for the month of May and I believe every child in Decatur was in attendance! Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band entertained with a variety of children songs, and even the adults were dancing. Maybe it was the break in the rain, or the fact that school is almost out, but it was very well attended and FUN!

The Blue Sky Concerts are produced by the Decatur Business Association concert signand sponsored by SunTrust Bank and were co-sponsored this month by Little Shop of Stories and Montessori School at Emory. The concerts are run by a volunteer committee that staffs each concert, books the bands, and get the prizes that are given away at the intermission.

If you missed today’s concert, Douglas will be playing at the Decatur Beach Party on the new “Ponce Fun Pier” from 6 until 9 pm.

Baatin Muhammed

Baatin Muhammed

Baatin and Top Secret played the Concert on the Square this past Saturday night and they were a BIG hit!  Baatin is a multi-talented musician who plays guitar, keyboard, and sax as well as having a great singing voice. His band played a lot of jazz mixed with some R&B and some oldies such as “My Girl”.

The band was also joined by special guest Otis Redding III. I had the pleasure of talking with Virgil Gibson, who was the lead singer of The Platters. Some of you may be old enough to remember The Platters! Virgil didn’t get up on stage, but was there to show support to his friends and fellow musicians. He ahs had quite an interesting career and has played all over Europe.

The Hunt Begins!!

The Hunt Begins!!

The annual Decatur Business Association Easter Egg Hunt was held Saturday during the great spring weather that graced us. Thanks to the co-chairs of the event, Kathleen and Ron Everett, for all of their hard work leading to the success of the event.

Thanks to the City of Decatur Fire Department for escorting the bunny to the Square in the mini- fire truck. The children enjoyed climbing on the truck and ringing the bell!

Firefighter Tracey Collins shows the children how to ring the bell.
