The City Commission had its first meeting of 2009 and officially confirmed, welcomed and swore in Decatur’s new Fire Chief Toni Tolbert Dixon.  Chief Dixon brought her entire family – husband, daughter, mom, dad, brothers, sisters, neices, nephews and they filled up most of the seats in the room.

Chief Dixon comes to Decatur from East Point where she was most recently the Deputy Chief, Administrative Services.  She joins Chief Jerry Malone who plans to retire in July after 30+ years of service.   They will work together as Decatur’s Dynamic Duo for the next six months.

Welcome Toni – and thanks for the support of all of your family.  We look forward to your being a part of the community.

Did you happen to take photos at the 2008 Decatur Wine Tasting Festival on Saturday, November 1?  We are looking for photos of an older woman who came to the festival in her wheel chair.  It was her birthday and she and her son, who was visiting from Texas, decided to come in at the last minute.  Her son reported that she had a great time and attendees kept coming up to her and taking her photo and telling her they wanted to be just like her when they reached her age.  She loved the attention and the day!

Her son called to say that his mother died two weeks after the Wine Festival and he would so much like to have a photo of her enjoying her last birthday.  She was a long-time Decatur resident and he went to Decatur High School in the 1960s.  If anyone has a photo, please let us know or email it to linda.harris@decaturga.com.

Bandstand or Gazebo?

bandstand-decaturIn the center of our wonderful Old Courthouse Square stands a structure that serves as a gathering point for many concerts, festivals and weddings. Is this structure a bandstand or a gazebo?

120px-singapore_botanic_gardens_gazeboAccording to Wikipedia, a gazebo is a pavilion structure, often octagonal, commonly found in parks, gardens and spacious public areas. Gazebos are freestanding, or attached to a garden wall, roofed, and open on all sides. They provide shade, basic shelter and a place to rest. Some gazebos in public parks are large enough to serve as bandstands.

180px-hornimanbandstandsmallA bandstand is a circular or semicircular structure set in a park, garden or pier and designed to accommodate musical bands performing outdoor concerts. A simple construction which not only creates an ornamental focal point it also serves acoustic requirements whilst providing shelter for the changeable weather. Many bandstands in the United States originated in the Victorian era as the British brass band movement gained popularity. Smaller bandstands are ofter not much more than gazebos.

Since a gazebo is a small detached structure and our “structure” is large, as well as accommodating to bands and concerts, I am going to conclude that what we have is a bandstand!

The Decorate Decatur judges loved the over-sized snowflakes and blue and white lights on their Decatur home.

It might be 65 degrees outside, but Adair Street is filled with snow people. The street’s theme this year is “There’s No People Like Snow People.” We encourage everyone to take a drive or walk down this street at night. Here’s a preview of what you’ll see:

Wordsmith’s, Greene’s and Parker’s all have great holiday decor. Believe it or not, the paper snowflakes on Wordsmith’s windows were cut out by hand:

One of the winners even created a google map listing all of the 2008 Decorate Decatur sites. We’re so impressed! Check it out here.

$50 or Less

There’s been a lot of discussion on the local blogs about the common misconception that local boutiques only carry expensive items. Since this topic surfaced, a number of Decatur shop owners have done a great job changing customers’ perceptions. For example, Alexia Gallery’s sign:

Over 700 items under $50?! Not bad for beautiful,  hand-crafted jewelry.

Also, we’re happy to report that  it sounds like we don’t have to convince anyone about the benefits of keeping it local. This season many of Decatur’s shop owners have told us that customers have been more determined than ever to do all their holiday shopping locally. Thanks for the local support, everyone!

Santa at Greene's Fine Foods

Santa at Greene's Fine Foods

Santa was spotted strolling around downtown Decatur during Terrific Thursday and brought smiles to the faces of shoppers and, of course, children of all ages. He stopped by Greene’s on the corner of Trinity and Church Street and delighted the children who were there to make Holiday Crafts. Santa made his way down Church Street, and stopped to sing a song with carolers at the MARTA Station entrance, then after stopping in at Mingei and Java Monkey, rounded the corner and posed with the Flamingo in front of Natural Body Salon on Ponce.

Santa will be in Decatur again this Thursday night visiting shops during Terrific Thursday and  at the Bonfire and Marshmallow Roast on the Square. The bonfire is from 7 until 8 pm and Santa will be available for photos on the Bandstand. Join in singing your favorite holiday songs with the carolers. The Bonfire is sponsored by the Decatur Business Association and local businesses.

Steinbeck's Offers New Menu

Chicken Wings

Chicken Wings

We had the great pleasure of having lunch at Steinbeck’s today and trying out their new menu. There is a “bar menu” and a”brunch menu”, as well as “Daily Specials” on the chalkboard. There were enough of us that we got to sample many of the items and they were all delicious!. The chef, Andy Gonzalez, explained that all of the food is made fresh and specials change daily. I had the fried chicken, a large split breast that came with kale and the best stone ground grits I have ever tasted. Other items sampled by our group included the blue cheese fries, yummy pimento cheese, liver pate, smoked chicken wings, a fried bologna sandwich and pork tacos. Luckily we had a hungry group!

Steinbeck’s features a full bar and a new wine list, but since it was lunchtime we didn’t  sample that. Makes a good excuse to go back and try out some more of the menu items.
Hope to see you there soon.
