A closer view of the stream bank restoration work

A closer view of the stream bank restoration work

Progress is being made on the restoration of the stream corridor running through Glenlake Park.  The stream bank has been returned to a more natural appearance which will reduce erosion and allow the stream to become an integral part of the Glenlake Park experience.  The stream bank restoration work is a great demonstration project showing how streams in urban areas can be restored.  The project included the removal of large concrete walls that had channelized the water and contributed to erosion.  Native plants are being used to stabilize the naturalized stream bed and a “living stake” system holds fiber mats in place that will protect the banks until the root systems of these plants are established enough to protect the stream bank.  These living stakes are cut from willow trees and will actually sprout and grow to become part of the natural vegetation and provide stability for the stream bank.   Because of the heavy equipment required to complete the park improvements and the extensive nature of the work being done,  the park and the walkway through the park remain closed.  However, we will continue to provide photo updates of the progress throughout the summer.

The new Glenlake Poolhouse Opens Friday

Our ceremonial scissors are getting a workout with our second ribbon cutting this week.  Come join the fun and view the beautiful new Glenlake Poolhouse which will officially open Friday at 5:00 p.m.  The pool will be open for free swimming on Friday from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.  The celebration continues on Saturday with free swimming available from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  Regular pool fees and hours resume on Sunday.   Remember that Glenlake Park remains closed for construction but parking is available on both sides of Church Street.  The new poolhouse and pool upgrades were funded by the City’s Capital Improvement Bond Program.  Look for colorful shade structures to be added in the next few weeks as a few finishing touches are completed.

The City of Decatur’s own Juan Wharton has joined the Decatur Court Kings, a professional men’s basketball team.  Juan is an employee with the PALS division (Parking, Assistance, Liaisons to Merchants, and Safety).  You may know Juan as that “guy that writes the parking tickets”, but the PALS employees are well known in the community and they provide a direct point of contact between city staff and Decatur residents, visitors, and businesses. Congrats Juan!

Check out the website for the team at www.wbacourtkings.com.

The team is offering a Home Opener Special for their first game, which will be held at Agnes Scott College this Thursday.  All remaining home games will be held at the Decatur Recreation Center.   The cost is only $5 for teens and adults.  Kids 6 and under are always free!  Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling (770)-904-5081. Ribbon cutting bestThe Ribbon Cutting for  Decatur Fire Station Number 2 was held this morning at the new station located on West Hill Street. Members of the City Commission, employees, community members and others were on hand for the occasion. Commissioners Mary Alice Kemp and Jim Baskett did the honors of cutting the ribbon, and Mayor Floyd made a few comments to those gathered. Fire Chief Jerry Malone has waited 20 years for this new station and was visibly happy to see it complete before his retirement in July.

The Decatur Arts Festival Fine Arts Exhibition will close on Sunday, May 31 with panache.  The Last Call event, from 4 – 6 p.m. features a harpist, a few artists who will talk briefly about their entries and an announcement of the winner of the People’s Choice Award – not to mention free beer, wine, and light hors d’oeuvres.

The Arts Alliance began this tradition several years ago and it has proven to be a very enjoyable, unpretentious way to enjoy art and classical music.  Did I mention that it is free?

The Dalton Gallery is located in the Dana Fine Arts Building on the Agnes Scott Campus.  Parking is available next to the building or in the parking deck.  Come take advantage of a little culture – Decatur style.

Come help us cut the ribbon for Fire Station #2 on Monday, June 1 at 10 a.m. The station was demolished and completely rebuilt and now the trucks fit, there are bathrooms for our female firefighters, and it can serve as an Emergency Dispatch Center and/or an Emergency Operations Center if necessary.   We are hoping to achieve a LEED Silver Designation soon.  It looks beautiful – come see it!   Hope to see you there.

greenesDid you know that Greene’s Fine Foods is owned by the Greene family? I bet this whole time you thought the owners named their Decatur candy/gift shop after their favorite color. . . and then added an “e” at the end. . . hmmm, maybe not.

Anyways, today is the eldest Greene brother’s birthday and the family is celebrating by offering 40% off all in-store purchases today! That means you can stock up on fudge, chocolate covered pretzels and delicious gummy candies when you stop by the store between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. today to wish Phil Greene a happy birthday.

40% off candy? Now that’s what I call a sweet deal. Get it? Sweet.

Leons-33-01Heather from Leon’s Full Service writes in that Leon’s is now open for lunch every day at 11:30 am except for Mondays.  I am looking forward to having a great lunch, but the problem is deciding what I want to eat. There are so many great selections.

There is quite a selection of sandwiches, which all come with a side. I am leaning toward trying the grass-fed burger or maybe the shrimp gyro; or should I try the grilled vegetable sandwich? Then there are the salads, and the main entrees……

Hope to see you at Leon’s for lunch!
