A New Bank in Town?

DSC00911What? City Hall seems to have been converted to a bank overnight. No fear- City Hall is intact as is the city. A made for TV movie, Past Life, is filming in Decatur and is using City Hall for a bank robbery scene.  The scene will be a character’s flashback in the movie. Quite exciting, yes?

beerfest_FBprofileFor those of you that have been calling our office since November 2008 asking when the 2009 Beer Fest tickets go on sale, this is the post for you! All the 2009 Great Decatur Craft Beer Festival information is now online. You can get your beer fest updates in 3 forms:

Social media overkill? Of course not! The beer festival sells out every year. So the more you know about it, the better.

Also, I have a feeling the festival t-shirts are going to sell like hotcakes this year because of this little guy to the right. The 2009 logo was designed by graphic designer Roger Fleming. Take a look at his blog.

Word on the street is the beer festival planning committee has unofficially named the little logo guy Firkin after a certain type of small, wooden keg. I think it’s very fitting.

And just to recap, the important dates are:

  • August 24: Tickets go on sale.
  • October 17: The Great Decatur Craft Beer Festival

logoI am looking forward to the 9th Annual Decatur Barbeque Blues & Bluegrass Festival this Saturday, August 15, at Harmony Park in Decatur. Michelle Malone, who has just released a new CD entitled “Debris” will be headlining as part of her national tour. There is a great line up of musicians beginning at 4 pm including John Emil, Flatrock Bluegrass Band, Delta Moon and The Dejablue Grass Band. Michelle Malone begins at 8 pm.

The gates open at 4:00pm and there will be live music until 10:00pm. Kids 10 and under admitted free. Please note that no outside coolers will be permitted on the site.

Can you think of someone whose photo belongs on this wall?

The Hometown Heroes wall located on the first floor of City Hall.

Decatur launched it’s Hometown Heroes recognition and celebration in the summer of 1996 at the close of the Hometown to the World festival during the Olympics.

Now is the time to begin thinking of your favorite Decatur Hometown Hero – someone who works hard, often behind the scenes, to make our community a better place to live and work. Nominate that person for recognition as a 2009 Hometown Hero. Nominations  will be accepted until Sept. 15.

For more information and for a nomination application visit the City’s Hometown Heroes webpage.

Better post that permit!

The Planning Department held their first Homeowner’s Night last Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.  Despite the torrential downpour at exactly 6:oo p.m., Frances and Suzanne Shaeffer came to check it out.  They were thoroughly drenched, but it was well worth it because they received great information regarding a few projects they are thinking about for their home.

The Shaeffer’s have a finished attic that isn’t really finished.  You pull off the paneling and you can feel the wind blowing in the house and the air conditioning blowing out into nature.  The squirrels are happy, the Shaeffers are not.

They met with Rick Logan, our Building Official, who explained what they could do to better insulate their space and improve the construction of the attic.  They then met with Regina Brewer, the Preservation Planner (okay, that’s me), to discuss possible property tax freezes and credits for completing a rehabilitation on a historic property.  Then they met with Amanda Thompson, Planning Director, to discuss what size addition they could build based on their zoning and lot size.  The Shaeffer’s have two boys and a third on the way, so more space is definately important!  They finished up by talking to Nathan Soldat, our Permit and Zoning Technician, who gave them outstanding guidance on how to pull those pesky plumbing and HVAC permits.

The Shaeffers left with lots of handouts, great advice, and a much better understanding of the building process in Decatur.  Jealous? You don’t have to be!  You too can immerse yourself in the fabulous world of building and permitting.  The next Homeowner’s Night is Tuesday, October 6th from 6-8 p.m.  Be there or beware!

The article stated that Cakes & Ale is ‘a 50-seat neighborhood spot where the kitchen staff often answers the phone when you call to make a reservation, and a chalkboard announces the daily menu, which features simple, precise dishes’

Be sure to stop by Cakes & Ale and congratulate Billy and Kristin.

Decatur is becoming a popular place to film movies, Made for TV movies, and TV pilots and this week is no exception.  On Friday be on the look-out for filming in the 200 block of E. Ponce de Leon in the gas station at the corner of N. Candler, inside an apartment in the older complex located at that intersection and in front of the Wachovia Bank building.  They will be filming a Made for TV movie called Past Life.

On Monday, August 10, Drop Dead Diva will be back.  They will film the final episode of season one using street scenes in the 100 block of E. Ponce de Leon and on E. Court Square.  They will also be filming inside Zucca and Parker’s on Ponce.   You may remember that they filmed the first episode in Decatur and that episode drew 2 1/2 million viewers.  They are hoping the final episode will be just as popular and that the series will be picked up for another season.

The good news is that these film companies are making a donation to the Decatur Youth Fund which helps needy Decatur children be able to attend after school and specialty camps.  So if by chance you are stopped in traffic for a few minutes, know that they are making a contribution to our community – as well as putting us on the big screen.

warehousesaleThis is a reminder for all you fashionistas and bargain hunters out there. “The Best Boutique Sale Ever” is coming to Decatur at the Holiday Inn this Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Decatur boutiques, including Boogaloos, Heliotrope, Kaleidoscope, Rockit and Squash Blossom, will be there with sales up to 90% off along with seven other local Atlanta boutiques.

Kaleidoscope’s latest email said they’ll be selling summer pieces from Tulle, Gentle Fawn, Joyous and Free, Modern Amusement, 7 Diamonds and, best of all, Milly – the line that was recently featured in Vogue’s Steal of the Month column.

So let’s do the math: fashionable clothes + bargain prices + supporting local shops + one convenient location = a no brainer. See you there.
