The current fiscal budget includes funding for developing an urban garden on the property owned by the City of Decatur located between 2nd and 3rd Avenues south of East Lake Drive.   The City of Decatur has been working with Lindsey Mann, a Decatur resident and landscape architect, to design gardening opportunities on this property. To make the plan successful we need public participation in the process. The first meeting is scheduled will be held at The Solarium next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

angela

Looking for something to do tonight, and on a tight budget? Karen Skellie writes in that Angela Easterling will be appearing at the Decatur Library tonight at 7 pm and the performance is free.

“Angela was raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and her country roots run deep.  Her unique sound and soulful writing display her enchanting brand of neo-traditionalist country that mixes hard-edged honky tonk with fetching ballads.  You’ll hear a hint of gospel and authentic acoustic instruments, but she’s not your usual country girl.”

I have been quite impressed with the number of  free activities offered at the Decatur Branch. GA Center for the Book brings in great authors, and Karen has been bringing in some popular music performances. This is all in addition to being able to borrow books, DVDs, CDs, Books on Tape……the list goes on.  My son and I visit at least once a week.

Great work Library folks!!

Please join the Decatur Bulldog Booster Club to kick off the 2009 Football Season at a community pep rally!  The Rally starts at 6:00 pm on the plaza outside of the stadium off of Commerce Drive.

Following the rally, head on over to the stadium to watch the Decatur Bulldogs take on cross-town rivals Druid Hills.  Kick off will be at 7:30.

Sounds like a great start to the weekend.

DECATUR_Concerts_0909r2.epsSee you on the Square!

We are so excited that Decatur is among the first around to install solar powered trash compactors! The compactors are being installed in front of Starbuck’s and Java Monkey as we speak. Jerry Knotts and his crew are working hard to get them going and I can’t wait to see them in action.

Jerry Knotts shows off the new compactors.

New and more visible recycling bins are being installed as well, but they won’t compact. Hopefully these additions will be a big hit and we will see them popping up around the city soon.

Take a close look at this photo and figure out what is wrong. Correct- the cars are stopped in front of Fire Station #1 even though there is a sign reminding drivers to keep the street clear. In fact, a second sign was recently added to remind drivers to look at the first sign. The lines in front of the station were also widened. Still, cars blocked the entrance, and more importantly, the exit, to the fire station. I know I don’t have to explain why this is not a good practice and why I want to remind everyone to keep Fire Station exits clear in Decatur and everywhere you drive.
This is how we want to see the same scene!

And while on the subject of signs…….I was on my way home on Monday night stopped at the crosswalk on East Trinity and saw one of our City Commissioners walking to the Commission meeting. The Commissioner made it half way across and luckily “peeked” around the cars to make sure no one was coming.  Luckily our Commissioner stopped as the car coming down the road sped right through the marked crosswalk. Today’s other sign reminder:  always assume someone is crossing at marked crosswalks and slow down when you see this sign…….

Have a great weekend here in Decatur, and stay safe!

Top of MenuIn my last post I said “more to come” so this post has been a long time coming.  This is my second suggestion for meals that cost roughly $5 dollars in Downtown Decatur.  The first was Raging Burrito a couple of months ago.  Amaryn’s Thai Bowl & Sushi is located at 265 Ponce de Leon Place (404-373-2788) and has daily lunch specials for $5.95.  I chose the Thai Noodle Bowl which is a bowl of thin rice noodles, pan-fried with shrimp, chicken, scallions, and egg.  It’s garnished with bean sprouts, and peanuts.  You can get it with chicken, tofu or veggies.  All lunch specials come with a cup of clear soup which was delicious.

This was the top end of the roughly $5 budget I was working with so water as usual was a must.  The portion was large and I left very full.  There is a wide variety of lunch specials and they are served 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  On Tuesdays and Wednesday they have $1 Sushi all day, though the selection is limited and serving size is small, for $1 it’s still a great deal.

More to come…..hopefully sooner this time.

Congratulations Agnes Scott

Agnes Scott

Several of us here at Decatur City Hall are graduates of a woman’s college so we are proud to share this great news from Decatur’s own Agnes Scott College.

ATLANTA – Agnes Scott College ranks second among liberal arts colleges in the “Top Up-and-Coming Schools” in the U.S. News & World Report’s just-released 2010 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.” It is the only women’s college recognized in this category.

“This is exciting news,” said Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss. “We ranked in ninth place when this particular ranking first appeared last year, so we are thrilled to move even higher on the list. It indicates that others are hearing about the ways we continually enhance our academic programs and the overall college experience for our students.”

The 77 colleges and universities ranked in this category were singled out by their peers as schools that have recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.

In a new ranking this year, also selected by higher education peers, Agnes Scott places 17th among liberal arts colleges with “A Strong Commitment to Teaching.” This list identifies schools where the faculty has an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.

“Agnes Scott professors are passionately devoted to helping students learn and succeed,” Kiss said.  “Whether it is mentoring student research, co-presenting at a national conference, creating innovative programs in fields like sustainability or public health, or giving career and life advice, our faculty are there for students.  It is so gratifying that Agnes Scott has been recognized in this category, which gets at the heart of what college should be about.”

An independent, liberal arts college in metropolitan Atlanta, Agnes Scott placed 22nd in “Great Schools, Great Prices,” which gives it the distinction of being the best value college in the Southeast.

In this new edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” Agnes Scott improved its overall position among national liberal arts colleges to 59th, up from 63rd just three years ago.

More than 1,400 schools nationwide are included in the 2010 “America’s Best Colleges. During the 26 years that the U.S. News college rankings have been published, the groups of schools have been based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Several exciting improvements have been made over at the Oakhurst dogpark this week.  Dan Magee, the City’s Active Living Director, said that he hopes the changes improve safety and make it a nicer experience for dogs and their owners alike.  Much of the kudzu and privet has been removed and turned into mulch for the trails and a new fence has been installed to keep dogs out of the especially muddy areas.  I visited the park tonight with my dog Lola, and even though I can never get her to look at the camera, I snapped some shots to show the changes.   We had a great time, and really enjoyed the improvements.  Thanks to everyone who made it happen!
