A handful of residents did not get their recycling picked up on Kirk Road today due to re-paving. Our recycling crews will be back tomorrow to empty the bins they were unable to reach today.

For more information call City of Decatur Public Works at 404-377-5571.

Are You the Next Winner?

Decorate Decatur is coming soon and the judges are looking forward to seeing Decatur’s Holiday Spirit. The anonymous judges will drive  the four square miles of the City of Decatur on Sunday, December 20 from 7 until 9 pm and decide upon the 2009 winner of the coveted Commissioner’s Cup. The winner has the priviledge of displaying the cup in their home for one year as well as having their name engraved on it.  Last year’s winner Ron Russell is pictured below. As you can see, he did not want to give the cup back!

In addition to the Commissioner’s Cup awarded to one lucky homeowner, several homes and businesses will be declared “winners” and a sign will appear in their yard on Monday, December 21st.

If you have a favorite decorated home or business that you would like the judges to consider, please call 678-553-6573 and leave the address.

There are no rules or regulations for the contest- so start decorating and may the best decor win!

Decatur Gallery

Decatur Gallery, located on Ponce de Leon Place in downtown Decatur, invites the community to two art events. On Wednesday, December 9, from 7 until 8 pm, the Gallery will hold a FREE Artist Information course featuring  Fay Gold, of the Fay Gold Gallery. Ms. Gold will share her expertise from 30 years in the art world. This is a great opportunity for atists of all levels.

Then, on Saturday, December 12, from 5 pm until 10 pm, join the Gallery for their annual Holiday Open House. They will have beverages, hors d’oeuvres and music as well as an outdoor artist market in front of the Gallery. Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday night while helping to support local artists.

As part of the capital improvements program the City is looking into redesigning the rail road crossings at McDonough and Candler streets. Attendees at the community workshop on November 12 discussed how to make the intersections safer for all users.

How would you redesign the intersections? What is currently the most dangerous aspect of the crossings? Would you be interested in a quiet zone? We want to know your thoughts on these and other questions on the Open City Hall rail road crossing page. We already have three great responses and looking forward to reading more.

Sounds Like Fun!

Time to get your holiday groove on for a party with a purpose on December 17th.   Put on your dancing shoes and join your neighbors for the 4th Annual Chriskwanukkah Party.  It’s also a CD release event for “We Three Kings,” a jazzy, funky, and soulful collection of instrumental Christmas songs. If the CD is half as good as The Temptations Christmas Album, it will be awesoome!

The event will be held in Decatur at the Solarium in Oakhurst and proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.

What Are Your Thoughts?

We gathered a lot of great information from last month’s public input meetings and we want to hear more! Don’t believe me? Well, to prove how much we want your opinion on the cultural arts in Decatur we have not one, but TWO, ways you can share your thoughts on the subject:

1.) Decatur Cultural Arts Master Plan survey

2.) Cultural Arts Open City Hall page

Fill out the survey or write down your thoughts on Open City Hall, or if you really want to make our day, do both!

Daylight View of the Downtown Christmas Tree

Wow- last night’s Terrific Thursday was extra terrific! Santa and his “entourage” were out and about visiting the shops around the square and will be visiting the rest of downtown Decatur’s shops in weeks to come. We were thrilled to be visited by carolers from Agnes Scott College – they stopped to have a picture made with Santa too.

Santa and His Entourage!

The tree lighting on the Square brought hundreds of folks to downtown Decatur Thanks so much to Krista of Little Shop of Stories for getting the tree and making this event happen. Check out her blog  to find out where the tree came from. Cute story and pictures.

Waiting for the Tree Lighting

Hope to see lots of folks out tonight for the Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes. I wish I had Santa to hang out with again tonight, but he is busy making toys for good little boys and girls. I asked for a new BMW, but he said it was too big for my stocking. Guess I need a bigger stocking!

Bosserman Home on Wilton Drive On Decatur Tour of Homes

If you have driven by the above home on Wilton Drive, I bet you were curious to see what the inside looked like. Well, here’s your chance! The Bosserman’s home is one of eight homes featured on this year’s Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes. Photos of the other great homes can be found on the Tour website.

In addition to the eight homes, the Tour features two Points of Interest; Clairemont Oaks, a senior adult retirement community and the 18th annual Holiday Marketplace and Cafe at Clairemont Elementary School.

The Decatur Active Living Department is offering a free shuttle. Park at the Frist Baptist Church at the corner of Clairemont Avenue and Commerce Drive and catch a ride to the homes. Those with comfortable walking shoes might want to walk the Tour, as hhomes are clustered within walking distance of each other. If you get tired, you can catch the shuttle back to your car!

Tickets can be purchased for $20 in advance at Seventeen Steps, The Seen Gallery, Bicycle South and Ace Intown Hardware. Tickets will also be available at each home for $25. Proceeds benefit the Decatur Preservation Alliance which operates the Woodlands Garden and works to protect and preserve the city’s architectural heritage and the Decatur Youth Fund which sends disadvantaged youth to summer camps, summer school and specialty camps.

Hope to see you on the Tour!

Andrea Berry with eLife Magazine has a great idea for a Decatur holiday video card. She just sent us the details and we love it:

We want YOU to be part of Decatur’s first city-wide holiday video card. Here’s how to participate:

It’s simple! Just decide what you want to include: a photo, a note, a drawing or a short video of no more than 45-seconds.

The only rules are that your submission has to be holiday-related and it must be emailed to us by December 7, 2009.

Email your submission to aberry@elifemagazine.net. It can be just from you or from your whole family! We’ll put it with the other submissions and post it online with our Decatur Blog partners, during the week of December 7th.

Be as creative as you want to be! We look forward to receiving your greeting!
