Mike Killeen at the Decatur Green Fest 2010

This week’s Blue Sky Concert features Decatur’s own Mike Killeen! Mike is currently working on his fifth album, “Poverty is Real “and preparing for its release in late 2010. Originally from Athens, Georgia and now living in Decatur, Mike counts Bob Dylan, Vic Chesnutt, Nirvana, and Uncle Tupelo among his formative influences. He has shared the stage with southern rock legends the Marshall Tucker Band and Grammy Award winners, The Blind Boys of Alabama.

The Blue Sky Concerts are held each Wednesday at noon in May and September and offered free to the community by the Decatur Business Association and presenting sponsor SunTrust Bank. Pack your lunch or pick up something to-go from one of our may fine restaurants.

See you on the Square!

Pro golfer Stewart Cink lists his favorite Atlanta food spots on CitySearch and includes UJoint in Oakhurst as one of his top 5.

Local Atlanta beer connoisseurs are in luck this week. Not only is it American Craft Beer Week (May 17-23), it’s also the first annual Atlanta Beer Week (May 16-22).  Even luckier for us Decaturites, our city has a number of fine beer establishments that are joining in the festivities.

The Marlay House is hosting events every night this week including a canned beer tasting, beer trivia night, Irish music, beer and cheese pairing, a special tapping of Sierra Nevada’s imperial stout and a beer vs. whiskey night.

The Brick Store will have a ceremonial cask tapping and rare beer tasting, a cider flight night, Left Hand Brewing beer dinner, Hefe and Hotdog Humpday, a Civil Beer War, Vintage Vault Night

Leon’s is hosting a new brewery flight night, a special bottle night, Trappist Beer Night, special tapping of a Left Hand/Terrapin collaboration, beer cocktails and a Dogfish Head Bocce Ball Tourney.

Feast is hosting a beer dinner on Tuesday, May 18 featuring a few chosen selections from the Shmaltz Brewing Company.

Mac McGee’s events include Cask and Sausage, a traditional ale and stout dinner, Georgia Breweries Flight Night and a Malheur Brut Tasting.

Twain’s will be featuring three special cask ales all week starting Monday afternoon.

The City of Decatur Fire Department will hold the second of three scheduled Car Seat Events this coming Saturday, May 22 from 3 until 6 pm. Stop by the Callaway lot at the corner of Commerce and Trinity Place to have a trained car seat technician check your child’s car seat to make sure it is installed correctly.  Did you know that once a car seat has been in an accident it should be replaced? For more information on car seat safety, click here.

You may want to stop by the event on your way to this week’s Concert on the Square!

Everybody makes mistakes.  It is how you own up to them that makes a difference.  Atlanta Magazine made a big mistake in quoting Decatur housing values in their May issue.  They used data from all addresses with a “Decatur” mailing address rather than just those located within the city limits of  Decatur.  Yet, in the other information, including school data, they used the correct information from our independent school system, city population and crime statistics.   It was both incorrect and confusing.

Kudos to Editor Steve Fennessy for calling to alert us to the error before we saw it in print and for correcting the information in a “Department of Corrections” paragraph online (although the chart itself is still incorrect).  Steve says there will also be a correction in the June issue.

The good news is median sales prices have held relatively steady in the City of Decatur over the past three years, dropping by only 0.6 percent since 2007 to around $350,000 (rather than the -40.6% to $113,610 reported in the chart).  Many thanks to Sean Dammann, Decatur real estate agent and President Elect of the Decatur Business Association for helping Atlanta Magazine cull these numbers.

Thanks to Atlanta Magazine for owning up to the mistake and attempting to mitigate the damage quickly and professionally.
