I know what I'm doing on Sunday

LORI McKENNA w/ Shane Hines

EDDIE’S ATTIC (515-B N. McDonough St., Decatur, GA 30030)

Sunday, September 19 ~ 7:30 PM show / 6:30 doors

$17adv/$19door

Singer and songwriter, mother of five and plumber’s wife Lori McKenna has a boatload of stories to tell….  Having Faith Hill cover three of her songs (including the title track, “Fireflies”); touring with Faith Hill & Tim McGraw; appearing on Oprah with Hill, working with Tim McGraw who produced Lori’s 2007 Unglamorous CD.  And now coming full circle to a DIY CD and everyday home life.  This week, Lori sent her next self-released CD off to the printer the same day her youngest started kindergarten.

Imagine my surprise when turning on American Handiman on HGTV the other night to see Decatur’s own, Elliott Boswell, on the tube. Unfortunately I tuned in late, but he must have done something right, he is in the top five! Be sure to tune in next Sunday night to watch him. You can also vote for him on the HGTV website.

Congrats Elliott!

The Kilowatt Crackdown: Neighborhood Challenge Launches October 1st!

The Kilowatt Crackdown: Neighborhood Challenge is launching on October 1st, 2010.  This is one of those rare opportunities to do something good for yourself, something good for your neighborhood and something good for the planet.

The premise is simple, the City of Decatur neighborhood that reduces its electricity use during October and November by the highest percentage over this same time period as last year will win an eco friendly block party for everyone that participated. Neighborhoods must get at least 10 people signed up in order to participate.

In addition to the fabulous block party, participants who reduce their energy usage will get points redeemable for rewards from local merchants as well as national brands and chains.

Visit www.decaturkilowattcrackdown.com for more information and to learn how to sign up.

This program is brought to you by the Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board and EarthAid.   Please contact Lena Stevens, Resource Conservation Coordinator with any questions or concerns; lena.stevens@decaturga.com or 404-370-4102.

Last week a community workshop was held to discuss the railroad crossing improvements at Candler and McDonough Streets and the North McDonough streetscape improvements.

The workshop presentation, preliminary plans for the railroad crossing improvements and a variety of concepts that may be considered for the North McDonough streetscape improvements are available here. Also included on that webpage is a questionnaire you can fill out to comment on the proposed improvements.

We look forward to hearing from you.

The Fall 2010 Decatur Electronics Recycling Day is set for Saturday, October 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone can bring their old electronics to the Decatur High School parking lot at the corner of North McDonough Sreet. and West Howard Avenue.

Unfortunately, styrofoam cannot be accepted this year, but TV’s can still be recycled for $10 cash, exact change.

If you’re interested in volunteering at Electronics Recycling Day contact Sandy Johnson at 404-377-5571. For more information, read Decatur’s Electronics Recycling Day FAQs.

Weekend on the Cheap

One of the greatest things about Decatur is that you don’t have to be rich to live the good life. I am always amazed at the amount of fun you can have “on the cheap.”

Today and tomorrow, you can shop ’till you drop at Decatur First United Methodist Church’s Kid’s Used Clothes (and Stuff) Sale. I have been to this sale and let me tell you, it is a goodie!  Shoppers will find incredible bargains on an enormous selection of high-quality clothes (size newborn through size 18) plus toys, books, sports equipment, kids’ furniture, baby supplies, accessories, maternity items, and much more. Merchandise from 140 sellers!

Friday, September 10th from 9a.m. to 4:00p.m. and Saturday, September 11th from 8a.m. to 2:00p.m

Also this weekend, you can come out to see Gwen Hughes and the Retro Jazz Kats, a part of the Concert on the Square series. How much does it cost you ask?  FREE!!!!

Join us on the Square every Saturday night in September from 7-9:30pm

UPDATE! I just caught wind of another amazing deal in Decatur…

Mac McGee Irish Pub on the Square  has free Bluegrass with Brother Shine this Saturday, September 11 starting at 2:00pm all day for their 1st Annual Bourbon Festival!

And finally, don’t forget to visit the Decatur Farmers Market tomorrow morning from 9am to Noon. Tons of locally grown fresh organic and sustainable produce, flowers, and other organic and sustainable food products.

Have a great weekend Decatur!

Just a friendly reminder that regular services for Monday, Sept. 6 will be on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Regular pickup for Tuesday will be on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend. See you at the Decatur Book Festival!

Art Show Part of Book Festival

If you need to take a break from books and authors this weekend, stroll through the Fine Arts Invitational Art Show held inside  Sammiches N’ Stuff at 515 N. McDonough Street (next door to City Hall and below Eddie’s Attic) all weekend.  Enjoy the work on display by more than 15 prominent local artists.

Plus, on Saturday from 5 – 8 p.m. there will also be a Clothesline Show featuring artists from the Decatur Arts Alliance’s Creative Resources Registry.  Artists will hang their work from the clothesline and there will be free refreshments thanks to Sammiches.

The Fine Arts Invitational Show and the Clothesline Art Show are put on by the Decatur Arts Alliance and the event is free to the community.

National Preparedness Month is a time to take action and prepare for natural and man-made disasters. Now is as good a time as any to pull together your emergency kit and come up with a family disaster plan. If you need help with either of these things, check out the Emergency Management insert  in last November’s Decatur Focus (and be on the lookout for the update in a few months) or visit the ReadyGeorgia.gov website.

Need Books?

Yes, we have the AJC Decatur Book Festival coming up this weekend and there will be plenty of authors to see and hear and new books to purchase.

However, there is also the annual Friends of the Decatur Library Book Sale on Saturday, September 4 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the front lawn of the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street.  (In case of rain, the sale will be inside the library).

The line forms early as potential purchasers look through items donated from the bookshelves of others – a perfect example of both sustainability and “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”  Check it out.  All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Decatur Library and their special events for the community such as the Peter Rabbit Tea and the music series.
