Flux Projects is returning to Decatur – this time in the form of Momentary Performances, a series of 8 different choreographed performances that take place in 8 different locations.  Over the month of October, each performance will occur 4 times.

Decatur is one of the 8 locations and the first performance occured last Tuesday from 4:15-4:30 on the MARTA Plaza.  These vinyl letters placed on the base of one of the lights describe the Momentary Performance and if anyone saw a woman with a gallon of milk sitting quietly listening to Abba while a car was honking in the background, you experienced the performance.

According to Flux Projects Executive Director Anne Dennington, Momentary Performances stems from artist Lee Walton’s interest in the subtle, everyday actions of public life.  Through the simple use of vinyl text installed in public space, everyday actions are formalized, thus taking on a new life.  Everyday occurrences become celebrated events and blur the line between real-life and theater.

Come on out for the next three Tuesdays and experience the “action” – you will find the woman perched on the edge of this light.

Now that it is October and the weather is fabulous, take some time to stroll around Decatur this weekend.  Visit our local shops and see what’s new.

Heliotrope is offering “Time for Tea” – a tea tasting featuring Tea Forte teas on Sunday afternoon from 2 – 4 p.m.  Check out their new fun merchandise while you are at it.

October means ghosts and goblins start to appear everywhere.  And Decatur is no exception.  For the second year professional psychic medium Boo Newell and paranormal investigator Teri Rice return to offer the Decatur Ghost Tour.

Boo and Teri say they researched the ghosts at the locations and have done extensive research into the history of each site and they promise tour participants will learn about the history of Decatur and what makes it the great city it is today.

The walking tours are held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m.  They take approximately two hours and they encourage participants to stay and eat or drink at your favorite Decatur spot after (or before) the tour.  They say bring your camera and an open mind.

Now, how can you resist a ghost tour led by a woman named Boo!?!

Dance Dance Dance

I love the fact that Decatur seems to have an art gallery opening every weekend or some type of musical concert everyday, but being a self-proclaimed dance buff, I always get excited about local dance events.

Core Studios might have re-branded and changed it’s name, but it’s bringing back its Lunchtime in the Studio series tomorrow, Sept. 30, noon to 1 p.m. Audience members will get to meet the CORE Performance Company that has just returned to the studio after a summer spent traveling and making their own dances. Find out what they’ve been up to and learn what’s coming up in CORE’s 30th Anniversary Season. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. and “meal tickets” will be given on a first come first served basis. For more information call 404-373-4154 or visit www.severaldancerscore.org.

About Face, the new professional ensemble of Decatur City Dance, will perform their debut show, An Evening of Contemporary Jazz Friday and Saturday evening, 7:30 p.m. at Druid Hills High School. One of the directors of the company and two of the dancers  grew up training at Decatur School of Ballet and performing with Decatur City Dance. For more information call 404-377-6927 or visit www.decaturcitydance.org.

Bet they didn'tpull a permit!

That’s right everyone!  Homeowner’s Night returns to City Hall on Tuesday, October 5th from 6-8 p.m.  What?  You don’t know about this night?  It’s your chance as the happy (or unhappy) homeowner to come meet with the Planning Director, Building Code Official, Permit and Zoning Tech and the Preservation Planner and talk about your house.  We’ll talk to you about your ideas for an addition or remodeling, we’ll talk to you about the lap pool you desperately want (but likely won’t use), we’ll talk to you about pretty much anything related to your house.  It’s also an opportunity to pull a permit after hours (your contractor will be so jealous!) or just try to find out what the city’s laws and policies are regarding doing construction on your house.  This is your night!

So come to Decatur City Hall on Tuesday, October 5th from 6-8 and be enlightened and be happy!  For questions or restaurant recommendations, contact Nathan Soldat at nathan.soldat@decaturga.com.
