For those of you who didn’t get your beer fix at the Decatur Craft Beer Festival, head over to Leon’s on Monday night for a beer dinner.

It doesn’t get much more Decatur-like than this! Craft beer + locally owned business + locally grown food.

On Monday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. Leon’s Full Service is hosting a “Locals Only” Beer Dinner. The dinner is open to all (21 and over, of course) and the dinner food and beer is all locally sourced. Here’s what the event description says online:

We’ll be showcasing as much food as we can from the Decatur Organic Farmer’s Market and all beer will be local. This is a new approach for our beer dinners, as we’ll be choosing season food first and then selecting delicious beers to accompany.

The dinner is $60 per person plus tax and gratuity and limited to the first 40 people who get in touch with Mike at michael@brickstorepub.com.

Art Is In The Air

If art is your thing, Decatur is the place to be tonight:

First up, The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur is opening Just Suppose: The Art of Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann with a reception in their gallery beginning at 7 p.m.  Jerry Uelsmann creates dreamlike, mystical, black-and-white images using hand-printed multiple negatives.  Maggie Taylor combines vintage photographs, antique toys, and other found objects in her surrealistic digital photomontages.

The exhibition is spread between the Art Institute’s Atlanta and Decatur galleries and is part of Atlanta Celebrates Photography.  The gallery is located at One West Court Square.  The exhibit will run through Nov. 6.

Next, head over to Sycamore Place Gallery (on the corner of Commerce Dr. and Sycamore Place across the street from Carpe Diem), for Art & Poetry Show & Tell hosted by Laurence Holden and Honor Woodard.  The event goes from 7 – 9 p.m.  The gallery opens at 6 p.m. and a $5 cover is requested.  Wine will be offered with a donation.  Water and coffee are free.

Just in case all this art inspires you, The Seen Gallery invites you to join their newest Art Class:  Art is a Gift from the Heart – Beginning painting with Cindy Zarrilli.  Cindy will teach you through the medium of paint the basics that will help you create a timeless work of art for someone who has everything, or cherish it as a gift for yourself.  Cindy will lead participants through the background and basics of painting – color mixing, color theory, blending, building texture and style with acrylics so that you will leave with a masterpiece created by your hands from your heart.  Paint from a photograph from Cindy’s collection or bring in a photograph from your own personal experience to paint.

You may bring your own refreshments and bottle of wine (only those 21 and over) to get the creative juices flowing.  Cost is $65 with Art Advantage Paint set (includes Mini Easel Acrylic Paint Set with mini easel, 7×9.5 canvas, 3 brushes and a 6 color paint set) or $50 if you use your own materials.  Register now through October 20.  Classes begin Monday, Oct. 25 and run for four weeks.

Day of the Dead at Mingei

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), it may seem like a creepy, Tim Burton-ish version of Halloween. In fact, it’s a pretty cool Mexican holiday where family and friends come together and remember loved ones who have died by building altars using sugar skulls, marigolds and favorite food of the departed. It’s a time of celebration with parties, parades and lots of eating.

I’m not of Mexican descent, but I started celebrating Dia de Los Muertos in college when I was studying Spanish and loved how the holiday celebrates life without cheesy greeting cards.

How do you celebrate the holiday, you ask? Why, with skeleton figurines and paper decorations of course!

And luckily for us Decaturites, Mingei World Arts has some wonderful Dia de Los Muertos figurines.

Even better, Mingei is hosting its very own Day of the Dead event this Sunday, Oct. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. Celebrations include sugar skull cookie decorating, making sugar skull masks, enjoying Mexican treats and decorating Mingei’s Day of the Dead alter.

The store also has wonderful clay, wood, ceramic and paper mache figures, Day of the Dead jewelry, hanging muertos decorations and tin skull lanterns.

So come on out and celebrate Dia de Los Muertos Decatur-style!

Construction has commenced on the West Ponce de Leon-West Trinity Place Bicycle Lane Improvements.  While the major part of the work should be finished in the next month, the entire job will probably take about 3 months, depending on the weather.

The work includes milling, repairs and repaving of West Ponce de Leon Avenue and West Trinity Place, along with re-striping West Ponce de Leon and West Trinity Place to include new crosswalks at the intersections, on-street parking and bicycle lanes.  For more information about the project go to:

October means cooler weather and lots of events for lots of different causes.  On Thursday, October 14 there are at least two choices in Decatur – one outside and one inside so take your pick.

Carter & Valarie Wilson, Phyllis Edwards, and Leslie Munson enjoy the fun!

The Decatur Education Foundation’s Low Country Boil No. 8 features food by Chefs Michael Condon and Ray Allen of Badda Bing.  Beer provided by Victory Brewing COmpany, music by the Dammages, and plenty of “Gourmet & Getaway” auction items.  The Low Country Boil will be held at the Solarium, 321 W. Hill Street.   All proceeds benefit the Decatur Education Foundation.  Tickets are $50 and include food, beer, wine, soft drinks and a t-shirt.  Click here to purchase tickets.

This just in from Duane, Greg & Nicole and The Decatur Farmers Market

The farmers are bringing lots of delicious nutritious fall produce to the market now.  Lettuces, many different greens, turnips, carrots, potatoes, and sweet potatoes fill their displays.  The other food producers continue to bring their yummy baked goods, salsa, cheeses, cured meats and other prepared foods each week.  When food and other items do not sell, they go in the compost pile, to the chickens, or in the trash.

Since Labor Day there has been a drop off in the number of shoppers at both the Saturday and Wednesday markets, particularly the Saturday market.  School starts, kids get busy with activities, and the number of events increases.  This is the first year the Decatur Markets have been open year-round so remember to stop by and shop.  You gotta eat, right?

The system relies on the vendors who make their living growing, producing and selling food and they need a year-round market for their products.  The Decatur Market offers those opportunities.  They believe in the importance of a strong local food system.

Duane, Greg & Nicole would love to hear from you and see you at the market.  Send an email to decaturfarmersmarket-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to receive their weekly updates and find out what’s new.

A few things…

First of all, Happy Fall! I think it is safe to say Fall is in full swing. And to celebrate, Decatur will hold its first official Halloween Decorating Contest this year!

Residents and businesses are invited to decorate homes and/or businesses and submit a photo to events@decaturga.com by noon on Thursday, Oct. 28. Please include your name and address.

Many thanks to Jake Tockerman, who submitted a request for this special holiday decorating contest. Thanks also to Rik Abt and Sally Hamilton, 252 Kings Highway, who submitted this photo of their decorated home last year. Let the Halloween decorating begin!

If you have questions or need more information email katie.abel@decaturga.com or call 678-553-6547.

Also, Fall wouldn’t be the same without the Decatur Craft Beer Festival! Even though the event sold out weeks ago, you can still get in on the action by purchasing Beer Festival gear! Check out all the options under the Store section of our website!

Happy Monday Decatur!

A lot of us have come to love the snoballs at New Orleans SnoBall Cafe on West Ponce (my favorite is half pink lemonade and half coconut). They’re the perfect summer treat. So now that things are cooling down, you might ask, “What are they going to do during the winter!?!” Well, they’ll keep offering snoballs, but more winter-friendly fare will also be available. Expect more cafe food items like the delicious muffulettas that are already on the menu.

Owners Victoria and Jared are inviting everyone to help roll out their new fall/winter menu on Oct. 30, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Stop by and try out items from the menu, listen to live music and experience some New Orleans tricks and treats!

Did you know that the Decatur Fire & Rescue Department was offering free smoke detectors to Decatur residents? If you need one, complete and return this form or call 404-373-5092 and a member of the Fire Department staff will come out and install one for you. Firefighters are also conducting fire-safety checks at the time of smoke detector installation.  All you have to do is ask.
