I’m not really a fan of deadlines, but this one is tomorrow! Brave the weird fall weather and get outside and give us your best scary, creepy, kooky, and haunted decorations because the judging is tomorrow!

Submit your house or nominate one you love by emailing a picture and address to events@decaturga.com by noon on Thursday!

Here is just a taste of what you are up against…

Runners take your mark

The 1st Annual Atlanta Undy 5000 5K run will be held on Saturday, November 13 at 9:00 a.m. in Historic Downtown Decatur to help bring greater awareness to colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA), a national patient advocacy organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by colon cancer, will host the event.

The Undy 5000 is held in different cities across the country throughout the year. The goal of the event is to educate the public about colon cancer, promote screenings, and get people talking about this deadly, but preventable, disease. This event also raises much needed funds to support and build the CCA’s national and local patient support and innovative public awareness programs.

Lunch at The Square Pub

A group of us from City Hall decided to check out the brand-spanking-new Square Pub today for lunch. Seeing as there isn’t much written up on Decatur’s newest restaurant (except for here and here), I figured I’d take a stab at describing our lunch so you can get a better idea of what it’s all about.

We shared a fried avocado as an appetizer. I was skeptical when I first saw this on the menu even though the owner said it’s already become one of their most popular items. I was expecting heavily-battered, mushy avocado. What we got was a perfectly ripe avocado, covered in breadcrumbs and lightly fried.  We gobbled it up so fast that I didn’t even think about taking a photo until there was only one piece left:

Half the table ordered the pub’s fried bologna sandwich, which looked delicious. It includes a big slice of bologna, cheese and your choice of fries, tater tots or sweet potato tots:

To top off the whole meal, we tried out the fried oreos. My mouth is watering just thinking about them! And don’t think it was all unhealthy. The oreos were served with a strawberry sauce on the side!

Joking aside, the pub also has a great southwestern salad and a number of, er, healthier options if fried avocados, bologna and oreos are not your thing.

I know I’ll be back at some point after work so I can “research” The Square Pub’s extensive beer list.

If you live in the City of Decatur and your water looks a little discolored, it may be because the Fire Department is testing all of the hydrants in the city.  This is a required mandate that Decatur undertakes annually.

If you have questions, email Chief Toni Dixon toni.dixon@decaturga.com  or call the Fire non-emergency number at 404-370-4141.

If Its Got a Plug, You Can Recycle it This Weekend!

Don’t throw away that old cell phone, camera or PC component! Recycle it this Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 at Decatur’s Fall Electronics Recycling event. This semi-annual event has been hugely successful at diverting electronic equipment from landfills, where they may contaminate soil and water.  Since October 2005 the City has collected 400 tons of equipment, which is then sorted and disassembled into raw materials or cleaned for re use.

There is no charge for most items, however, TV’s will be recycled for a minimal fee of $10 cash per unit with exact change.

Decatur Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson and Ethel Steverson are hosting their 9th annual Junque Emporium on Saturday, October 23 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Big H parking lot over in Oakhurst.  Proceeds from this gigantic yard sale go for tax relief for the elderly in the City of Decatur.

You will find kitchenware, flatware, lamps, bedding, linen, dishes, glassware, rugs, garden tools, small & large appliances, collectable items, office & home furniture.

Go early and grab some of those dishes with Atlanta landmarks printed around the edges.  See if you can find the misspelled word (which explains the abundance of those particular dishes) in the fish-related landmark.  But leave some for me!
