Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services assigned its AA+ long term rating, and stable outlook, to the Decatur City Urban Redevelopment Agency’s $12.6 million revenue bonds series 2010A.  At the same time, Standard & Poor’s raised its underlying rating (SPUR) and issue credit rating (ICR) on the city’s debt outstanding to AA+ from AA.

According to S&P’s credit analyst Richard Marino, the upgrade on the SPUR and ICR reflects what they view as the city’s demonstrated ability to effectively manage its fiscal operations and maintain a strong financial position through the last recession and the current slower-than-typical economic growth.

The AA+ rating also reflects their view of Decatur’s:

  • Diverse employment base
  • Stable and very diverse primarily residential tax base
  • Strong wealth and income levels
  • Extremely strong per capita market values and
  • Good management policies and practices

The stable outlook reflects their opinion of Decatur’s ability to “maintain its strong fiscal profile, stable tax base, and strong wealth and income levels in the next two years.”  They also expect the city’s “capable management team will continue to maintain good management policies and practices.”

The series 2010A bonds are special limited obligations of the Urban Redevelopment Agency payable from pledged revenues.  Proceeds of this issue will be used to pay all or a portion of the costs of acquiring, constructing, equipping, renovating, and improving city facilities including Fire Station #1, Decatur Recreation Center, and the Public Works facility.

Retail Changes

Things are always changing on the Decatur commercial business front – and this holiday season is no exception!

  • Many of you know that Wiggle, a local favorite for cute children’s clothes, is closing after the holidays. All items in the store are 30% off including toys and other Christmas gifts. We’re saddened by the closing, but are relieved that owner Kolby Sanders-Lewis is continuing Wiggle online after the holidays. Monogramming will still be available and Kolby will offer free pick-up and delivery for Decatur residents.
  • The owners of Nectar in Oakhurst are changing their health eatery into Ashram Wellness in January 2011. Ashram Wellness will offer a range of yoga classes, massage therapy and nutrition consultations. To launch the program, the center is offering a New Year’s Resolution Package, which includes a yoga class, mini massage and a 15 minute phone consultation with a registered dietitian for only $30. Contact ashramwellness@gmail.com for more information.
  • Agilest Collections is now open on the ground floor of the 127 E. Trinity office building in between Chick Fil-A and Greene’s Fine Foods. The store specializes in modern classic contemporary design, new modern design furniture and home accessories.
  • Taste has reopened on Church Street and is selling customer favorites like Tervis Tumblers, Koziol products and Hot Squeeze.

The 28th Annual Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes begins tonight. The tour runs through tomorrow night, 5:30pm-9:30pm and features 9 homes in Oakhurst as well as points of interest at Fire Station #2, Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, and the Holiday Marketplace & Cafe.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at The Seventeen Steps, Bicycle South, The Seen Gallery, Intown Ace Hardware, and Taj Mahound in Oakhurst.

Proceeds from this amazing event benefit the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund and the Decatur Preservation Alliance.

***Please take advantage of the FREE shuttles running both nights. Parking for the shuttle is at McKoy Park and at Renfroe Middle School. ***

The Kilowatt Crackdown Has Officially Ended

The Kilowatt Crackdown officially ended on November 30th, and I want to thank everyone who participated.  This was a new project for us, and I am delighted with the amount of community support it received.  We had 142 people sign up, and 8 neighborhoods achieved the necessary participation to compete for the prize. (See the list below). This particpation represents 2.7% of owner-occupied housing units, and 1.5% of total housing units, which includes rental and public housing.  I’ve already had representatives from other cities call me to ask for advice on how to run these types of challenges!

We will be working with our partner Earth Aid in December to ensure that data is collected for all participants before a winner is announced.  Because bill cycles vary widely, we will most likely not be able to announce a winner until late December, or early January.

Again, on behalf of the City of Decatur and the Environmental Sustainability Board, thank you all for your support and participation.  Stay tuned for more opportunities to learn about improving the energy efficiency of your Decatur home.

The Decatur City Commission will hold a public hearing on designating two city properties as “urban redevelopment areas” on Monday, Dec. 6 at the City Commission Meeting, City Commission Meeting Room, 509 N. McDonough St., Decatur, GA 30030.  The two proposed Urban Development Areas are the property on Sycamore Street that includes Fire Station 1 and the Recreational Center, and 3.61 acres on Talley Street/Sam Street (pictured above) where the City’s Public Works facility is located. For more information on The Urban Redevelopment, view the proposed plan here.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree!

Little Shop of Stories is partnering with other local businesses to sponsor the city’s very own Christmas tree above the shops on East Court Square in downtown Decatur. The tree will be up all holiday season, but be sure not to miss the special Tree Lighting event on Thursday, December 2nd in conjunction with Terrific Thursdays. The event starts at 7 pm and will include carols, sweet treats, and lots of holiday cheer. Come out and join us for the celebration! Happy Holidays!

Beginning December 3, the Georgia Department of Transportation will be replacing storm water pipe across the 600 block of Clairemont Ave. Two lanes of traffic will be closed daily until the work is complete. Traffic congestion should be expected and alternate routes should be used if possible. Notices to the affected properties have been posted and two message boards are in place to provide updated information as available. We apologize for any inconvenience and we look forward to the improved drainage after this work is completed.

It might seem a little silly to encourage locals to shop locally online on Cyber Monday – especially when we also encourage active living (walk to your local shops, spend less time on the computer and enjoy the outdoors etc.). However, we understand that sometimes it’s just easier and quicker to purchase items online and this year some of our favorite local shops are celebrating Cyber Monday with great deals.

  • Mama Bath and Body is offering free shipping on all purchases over $50 and an additional 15% off all purchases over $100.
  • Greene’s Fine Foods has a fully operational online shopping cart and is giving a 10% discount off all internet orders.
  • Taj Ma Hound is offering 10% off all Holiday Gift Boxes and flat rate shipping on order placed now through Dec. 7.

And for those of you non-cyber shoppers, don’t forget that Santa will be walking around this Terrific Thursday after the Christmas Tree Lighting at Little Shop of Stories.
