Do you hear that? That’s the lull between Christmas and New Years. It’s pretty quiet around here, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do in Decatur this week. If you’re looking for something to do with the family or if you have some Christmas cash burning a hole in your wallet, here are a couple of suggestions:

Watershed is continuing its Southern Afternoon Tea into the new year. Tea time occurs weekly every Thursday through Saturday from 3-5 p.m. Southern Afternoon Tea includes organic loose tea and a variety of savory and sweet snacks. Reservations by phone are required and can be made by calling the restaurant at 404-378-4900. $15 per person.

Shopping Deals:

Greene’s Fine Foods is currently offering 25% off all pre-packed tins of nuts and candy. Qualities are limited so stop by to check out the best selections.

Stop by Big Peach Running Co. this week and you’ll receive a new Peach flavored mix1 (see photo above) with any purchase. Mix1 is an all-natural protein shake great for recovery after a long run like the upcoming Peachy Party (see “Looking Ahead” section below).

Mingei World Arts will have discounted holiday merchandise including stockings, cards, ornaments, CDs and nativities this week so you can get a frugal head start on next year’s holiday shopping. The store’s new winter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and Mondays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Local New Years Celebrations (I’ll add to this list throughout the week):

Celebrate the arrival of 2011 at Wahoo! Grill with featured dishes like caramelized scallops over chive polenta, crab bisque, black truffle ravioli with lobster, pistachio-encrusted grouper with sauteed spinach and Kahlua mocha cheesecake. Call for reservations, 404-373-3331.

McGowan’s Oakhurst Pub is hosting a New Year’s Even Party and Bonfire that includes free champagne at midnight. No tickets or cover and casual dress is encouraged.

On New Year’s Eve, Iberian Pig will be offering a three course pre-fixe menu for $59 per person that will include a split bottle of cava, champagne flute, a Castellucci Hospitality Group gift certificate and a gift certificate to Salon Red in Decatur. On New Years Day, The Pig will be serving suckling pig and lobsters beginning at 5 p.m. Call for reservations, 404-371-8800.

Eddie’s Attic will be hosting its late show on New Year’s Eve at 10:30 p.m. featuring Matthew Perryman Jones, a long-time attic favorite and former employee.

Looking Ahead:

Big Peach Running Co. is hosting the First Peachy Party of 2011 on Jan. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Join the Decatur Peachy Posse for a twisted take on a resolution run. There will be a 3 mile route set up with a couple of smiling volunteers posted at a few key places holding a bag with “resolutions” inside (including some that you can redeem at the store when you return). After the run, Twain’s is hosting a party where 15% of the night’s proceeds will go to Decatur’s Team Challenge. Register online here.

Be the first to try Chick-fil-A’s new Spicy Chicken Biscuit. Chick-fil-A in Decatur is giving a limited number of FREE Spicy Chicken Biscuits the week of Jan. 3-8 to customers who make a reservation. Spaces are limited so don’t delay!

Happy Holidays!

Some Last Minute Things

I can tell by the lack of emails in my inbox that most of you have already started your holiday celebrating today. For those of you with four-legged friends, make sure to stop by Taj Ma Hound from 5-7 p.m. tonight for the shop’s Holiday Party. There will be doggie cake and Beg Nog ice cream for pups and poinsettia cocktails for us humans.

Iberian Pig is not only offering its popular holiday catering this season, the restaurant will be open Christmas Eve until 10 p.m. and the bar will be open in 11:30 p.m. Finish up all of your last minute shopping, gift wrapping, and dinner planning and unwind with a glass of wine and some tapas.

If I get any more emails about happenings around town I’ll add to this post until I leave the office for the day.

City Hall will be closed this Friday and next Monday for the holidays.

The railroad crossing located at E. College Avenue and E. Trinity Place is now open for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Terrific Thursdays ended last night but that isn’t stopping our shops from offering a variety of holiday specials, discounts and party fun.  This just in from Worthmore and The Seen Gallery

Jingle Bell Rock with the Worthmore/Decatur Crew on Saturday, December 11 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.  Throughout the day you can enter to win free jewelry and gift cards.  They promise fun, food and holiday drinks from 12 noon – 7 p.m. including their Custom Coffee Bar.

On Saturday, head on over to The Seen Gallery where they are presenting new work by many of their artists, including Michael Klapthor, Joanna Stecker, Melissa Laurence, and Travis Smith, specially priced for gift giving.  Celebrate the season and enjoy an evening of art and holiday cheer.

By the way, did you know that The Seen now carries art supplies?  Check out their first shipment of inventory in oil, acrylic, and water color paints by Grahm, a variety of brushes by Connoisseur, and a few canvases.  The next order will include papers, pencils, chalks, some other paints and items needed for the painter.

A Soggy Bonfire

Unfortunately, we had to cancel last night’s Bonfire on the Square due to rain. We wish we had time to reschedule the event but since we are so close to the Christmas holiday, we just don’t have any time. Santa is a busy guy these days, ya know?

But if you did brave the wind and rain and made it out to the Square for the last Terrific Thursday of the year, you probably ran into Santa and his elves doing a little shopping and merry-making.

Fist stop of the night was at Greene’s Fine Foods. Santa is running out of time so he needed to pick up some candy and nuts to fill all of our stockings.

Next, he was off to Squash Blossom-checking the SALE racks for a little something for the Mrs.

We convinced Santa that if he really wanted to get on Mrs. Claus’ good side, he might need to have a little bling under the tree  so off we went to Worthmore Jewelers so find the perfect gift!

Just as we were escorting Santa back to his sleigh, look at this fine group of elves we ran into outside of Vivid Boutique and Little Shop of Stories…

If you didn’t get a chance to catch up with the Big Man last night on the Square, you get one more chance tomorrow morning at the Breakfast with Santa at the Holiday Inn. Go here for tickets…but hurry, they are almost sold out!

Holiday Reminders

In case you didn’t realize it, we are 9 short days away from Christmas! So that means several things…

1. You should join us tonight in downtown Decatur for the last Terrific Thursday of the year. All of your favorite shops and restaurants will have all kinds of deals, steals, and holiday treats.

2. At 7pm, you should bring the family over to the Bandstand for the annual Bonfire on the Square. Roast marshmallows and snap pics of your kids on Santa’s lap.

3. Go here, and buy your last minute tickets to Breakfast with Santa at the Holiday Inn. It’s the perfect way to start your Saturday.

4. Finally, drag out those boxes of lights and decorations and get moving! The Decorate Decatur contest is this Sunday night and those judges won’t wait for you to wrap that last strand of lights around the tree. Make sure your home is shining in all its glory and remember to turn on your lights as soon as it gets dark.

Happy Holidays Decatur!

For the past few years every time a bus tour comes through Decatur or a conference wants more information or when the DBA hosts the annual Agnes Scott orientation we would think to ourselves, “We need an official welcome video for Decatur.” Well (drum roll please) we finally have one! The video “premiere” took place last Tuesday evening at the Decatur Business Association holiday meeting.

We got some great feedback and would love to hear what you think:

Water Main Break

On Saturday, December 11, 2010, a water main break occurred at the intersection of E. College Avenue and E. Trinity Place.  Due to this break, various areas throughout the City of Decatur are experiencing either very low water pressure or a complete disruption of service.  DeKalb County is currently working to repair the break and restore water service to all affected locations.  We are anticipating all water services will be restored within the next 12 hours.

In addition, the railroad crossing located at E. College Avenue and E. Trinity Place is closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic until all repairs have been completed.  These repairs will take a minimum of 5 days to complete. A detour route has been established around the break and will remain in effect until all repairs have been completed.

There has NOT been a boil water alert issued by either the DeKalb County Board of Health nor the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management at this time.

For further information, you may call the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management at 770-621-7200.  Periodic updates will be provided through the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management and at the City of Decatur website at www.decaturga.com
