The Decatur Cemetery Fall/Winter Photo Contest runs through Feb. 28. Prizes will be awarded in two categories – amateur and professional – and the winning entries will be displayed on the Decatur website and in the newly renovated Decatur Cemetery Office.

Photos must be taken in 2010/2011 and submitted by the original photographer. Entries must be 5 x 7 or 8 x 10, color or black and white, either digital images (submitted on a CD or USB drive) or prints. You may submit up to five entries. Please include your name, email address and phone number with each entry. The photos will not be returned so be sure to keep a copy.

Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, and effectiveness in conveying the green space for the fall/winter season or the unique character  of the cemetery. Photos can include people walking pets as well as landscapes and other subjects.

To enter mail prints or CDs to Decatur Cemetery Photo Contest, Attention: Felix Floyd, 2635 Talley St., Decatur, GA 30030.

This has got to be one of the best kept secrets in town. Badda Bing recently reopened for lunch and now has a set menu for each day of the work week: BBQ Monday, Fat Tuesday (Creole/ Cajun menu), Italian Wednesday, Eat Clean Thursday and A Taste of the South on Friday. The best part? Each meal is only $6.54 – that’s $7 even with tax. And check out all the food you get:

I stopped by last Friday for the Southern food plate:

It really was enough for two people – and delicious!

This week you can choose between a salad or soup as a starter.

I would recommend getting to Badda Bing no later than 12:30 p.m. since the meals sell out most days.

Although they have been filming the last week or so around Forest Hills Elementary School, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” has offically begun shooting here in Decatur today. They will be on location all day today and then back at the end of next week to wrap up. The following is a press release with more infomation on the cast and crew…

Principal photography began today on Walt Disney Pictures’ “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” starring Jennifer Garner (upcoming “Arthur,” and  “Butter”), Joel Edgerton (upcoming “Warrior” and “The Thing”) and CJ Adams (“Dan in Real Life”).

Academy Award®–nominated writer/director Peter Hedges (“Dan in Real Life,” “About a Boy,” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”) is directing the film, and also penned the script, based on a story from producer Ahmet Zappa.  Zappa is producing along with Emmy® and Tony Award®–winning Scott Sanders (“The Color Purple,” “The Pee-wee Herman Show”), and Jim Whitaker (“American Gangster,” “Changeling”). Executive producers are John Cameron (“Lars and the Real Girl,” “Fargo”) and Mara Jacobs.

Rounding out the cast are Rosemarie DeWitt, Dianne Wiest, Ron Livingston, Odeya Rush, Lin-Manuel Miranda,  M. Emmet Walsh, Lois Smith, and Common.

“The Odd Life of Timothy Green” is an inspiring, magical story about a couple, Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton), who can’t wait to start a family but can only dream about what their child would be like. When young Timothy (CJ Adams) shows up on their doorstep one stormy night, Cindy and Jim, and their small town of Stanleyville, discover a whole new view on what it is to love and be loved.

The production’s creative team also includes double Academy Award®–winning cinematographer John Toll (upcoming “The Adjustment Bureau”), production designer Wynn Thomas (“Get Smart,” “A Beautiful Mind”), costume designer Susie DeSanto (“13 Going On 30,” “White Oleander”) and Academy Award®–nominated editor Andrew Mondshein (“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “Chocolat”).

The film is being shot in and around Atlanta, Georgia, notably in the surrounding counties of Walton, Morgan, Coweta and Cherokee. “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Now that the new City website has gone live, this is as good of a time as any to introduce you to the City of Decatur YouTube Channel.

We’ve had the channel up and running for a while, but there hasn’t been much content on it until recently.

You might have already visited the Decatur Channel buy clicking on the YouTube link that’s now on the footer of the new site:

Or perhaps you stumbled upon it by clicking on one of the entertaining six-word story videos on the new Decatur Tourism site:

Either way, you can visit the Decatur YouTube channel whenever you want at www.youtube.com/cityofdecatur. We don’t have a set schedule of how often we’ll be posting videos. However, we’ll keep you posted on any new videos here at The Decatur Minute. We’ll also include some video teasers that you can only access through this blog. Like this one where Walt Drake talks about Stephen Decatur:

Feel free to share that link with anyone you like. We’ll have it available to the general public on YouTube in a few days.

Alex Finn Author Appearance!

Friday, February 11th at 7 p.m.

Remember how much you LOVED Beauty and the Beast when you were little? (C’mon, we know Krista wasn’t the only one with a Belle sleeping bag.) Well, Beastly, by Alex Flinn, is a modern YA retelling sure to captivate you as much as the original. Kyle is a rich, popular high school hottie who humilates an outcast at a school dance. Turns out she’s a witch, and she curses him to look as ugly on the outside as his arrogant, selfish inside. The only way to break the curse is to find someone who can love him despite his horrifying appearance. Come see author Alex Flinn at Little Shop of Stories as she talks about her awesome new book, which is soon to be a major motion picture!

Noel MacNeal

Saturday, February 12th at 2 p.m.

Noel MacNeal, who has worked on Sesame Street for almost thirty years with such puppetry legends as Jim Henson and Frank Oz, will be talking about his (totally fun) book, 10-Minute Puppets. Come check it out and meet a true puppet master!

Remember — and this is extremely important — you MUST come fancy! Even grownups. Ball gowns, tuxedos, tiaras, top hats, gloves, boas, you name it.  Nothing, and I repeat, NOTHING is too fancy for this extraordinarily fancy event! We look forward exceedingly to the pleasure of your company.
