For the past few months we’ve been telling everyone that a large tenant is coming to Decatur – a tenant that fits in perfectly with our city’s growing creative business sector. We’ve been waiting until the Governor’s office made the official announcement and that day has come! For details about the company and a better understanding of why we’re so excited to welcome CCP to Decatur, I’ve included the full press release in this post:

City of Decatur Wins Global Company

DECATUR, GA—City of Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd announced today that CCP Games, the Reykjavik, Iceland-based digital entertainment developer, is relocating its CCP North America headquarters to 250 E. Ponce de Leon Avenue in the City of Decatur.  The company is expected to create 150 new jobs over three years, bringing the global software company’s staff total to 300 by 2013.  They will occupy 40,000 square feet of office space in the city’s downtown business district.

“CCP Games will be one of our largest private sector employers and is a perfect fit for our downtown business district.  They join a growing number of creative businesses relocating to our city because of our vibrant downtown business district and the high quality of life we offer,” stated Mayor Floyd.

The company is the developer of EVE Online, a science fiction-based massively multiplayer online game, which was published in 2003.  Through this expansion, CCP North America will support the needs of its growing company and create an economic ripple effect that will benefit the region for years to come.  The City of Decatur was selected because of its commitment to becoming a location for industries of the future and nurturing creative lifestyles.

“CCP outlined a list of requirements for their location including a safe, urban environment with a variety of restaurants and pubs that would be attractive to a younger work force,” said Peggy Merriss, Decatur City Manager.   “We had all of the amenities they listed and we are excited that they made the decision to join the Decatur business community.”

“Decatur offers the perfect blend of big city accessibility with a hometown feel that we were looking for,” said Mike Tinney, President of CCP North America. “Georgia’s financial climate combined with Decatur’s social climate provide the ideal conditions for continued growth.”

An economic market analysis conducted for the city last fall as part of their current strategic planning process identified the need for the city to focus attention on attracting new commercial office tenants to diversify the city’s job base and attract higher paying jobs to the city.  The report specifically targeted creative industries as an ideal fit because of the city’s reputation as a thriving small city with a business environment that encourages collaboration, supports small businesses and nurtures creative energy.

“The CCP decision to relocate to the City of Decatur is the type of announcement that every city wants to make.  I have enjoyed getting to know the owners of CCP and look forward to welcoming all of their employees to our city.  We believe they will be the catalyst that brings other creative businesses to our city and we look forward to a long, prosperous future together,” said Mayor Floyd.

“This project came together because everyone including the property owner, the State of Georgia, DeKalb County and the City of Decatur worked together to keep this company in Georgia and make this announcement possible,” said Sheila Hunt, the chair of the Decatur Downtown Development Authority.  “We began working on this project with the property owner and their leasing agents a year ago.  It was a team effort and we are grateful for all of the support we received to make this deal work,” she added.  The Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, the DeKalb County Development Authority, Georgia Power and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce assisted the company with this relocation and supported the city’s efforts to bring CCP to the City of Decatur.

Clairemont Elementary has been selected by GDOT ‘s Safe Routes to School Resource Center to be the featured school for the second annual Georgia Walk to School Day event on March 2, 2011. Based on the success of last year’s event, this year the Resource Center has selected a school to showcase.  This recognition will highlight Clairemont’s 6-year commitment to the SRTS program and their countless successes in transforming student commuting behavior. Though Clairemont was one of Georgia’s first SRTS programs, their process can be adopted by any school that is looking to increase their walking and biking population.

After arriving at school on GA Walk to School Day, students will gather in the auditorium for the morning assembly.  Highlights of the assembly include student-made videos of their experiences walking and biking to school, words of encouragement from  Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd, and representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation and the GA SRTS Resource Center.

Robynne Boyd, Decatur resident and author if The Low Carbon Diet blog

That is the question that Robynne Boyd, Decatur resident and author of a new blog on the Scientific American website, is trying to answer.  Her goal is to determine if her family can live sustainably without having to return to the days of living by campfire in huts without electricity.”

Step one for the Boyd family was to get an energy audit.  If the results of that audit showed her family to be living above a level that would be considered scientifically sustainable, she would put her family on a “low-carbon, low-consumption diet.”

In her most recent post, Robynne outlines what her energy audit was like, and even posted a great video.  It provides a wonderful explanation of what a a home owner can expect from a professional energy audit.  Georgia Power is paying for half of the audit through the Home Energy Improvement Program.  Stay tuned for more information about rebates from this program as well as from the City of Decatur.  If you are interested in receiving information about Decatur’s upcoming rebate program, email Lena Stevens, Resource Conservation Coordinator at lena.stevens@decaturga.com or call 404-370-4102.

In October 2010 the City of Decatur’s Environmental Sustainability Board launched the Kilowatt Crackdown, a friendly neighborhood competition to encourage individual households to reduce their energy consumption.  Participants signed up with a tracking system called Earth Aid at www.earthaid.net/decatur.  The website automatically tracks energy usage through the household’s utility bills. Neighborhoods were asked to sign up a minimum of 10 participants to be eligible.  The Decatur neighborhood that reduced its electricity use during October and November of 2010 by the highest percentage over their 2009 usage would win a block party.

We are proud to announce that the Decatur Heights neighborhood has won the Kilowatt Crackdown.  With 13 participants, and 3,500 kilowatt hours saved, this group was able to reduce their usage by 20%!  This is certainly an amazing accomplishment, and one worth celebrating.

Of the users that signed up for the challenge and successfully linked their Georgia Power accounts to Earth Aid, Decatur saw a 1.46% reduction in electricity usage, representing an overall decrease of 1,800 kilowatt hours.  That is enough energy to run your air conditioner 24 hours a day for over 2 months.  During the competition, some users saved more than others.   Among users that decreased their usage, the reduction was almost 12,000 kilowatt hours, resulting in a $15 savings per month on each household’s bill.

The most rewarding part of the challenge was the number of participants and the level of interest in the community,” said the Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Board Gary Garrett. Over 130 residents signed up for the program, representing 10 neighborhoods.

The program created some unexpectedly positive results.  “I’m proud that Decatur residents stepped up to the challenge and tightened their energy belts,” said Lena Stevens Resource Conservation Coordinator for the City of Decatur.  “Little changes in behavior really can make a difference, and the Kilowatt Crackdown proved that.”

Funding for this program is provided by the  Better Buildings Grant program.  If you are interested in learning more about upcoming programs and incentives related to home energy efficiency, email lena.stevens@decaturga.com.
