See you on the Square Saturday night!

Thank you, Decatur

Despite being a little gray and chilly, Sunday morning was a perfect day to run a marathon! It was also a perfect day to be in Decatur, cheering on the runners, and making people realize just how amazing our little City really is!

Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer and cheer! Here is just one email that a runner sent to our City Manager, Peggy Merriss:

“I wanted to send you a quick email to say thank you for the incredible welcome that your City gave to participants of the Georgia Marathon. I traveled from Orlando and it was one of the highlights of my trip.

I have a background in Local Government in Florida related to Planning and Engineering.  I was impressed with the City.  I was also extremely impressed by the enthusiasm your City had for the marathon participants.  I really left feeling that Decatur has a strong sense of community and that it would be a great place to live or work. Congratulations again.  I think your efforts will continue to pay dividends in the years to come.”

Volunteers set up the Hydration Station in front of the Holiday Inn

These guys were the best entertainment!

Early this morning Alma Fleetwood, a long-time resident of Decatur and one of the City’s most dedicated employees passed away.  Alma was a caring, out-going and devoted part of the Decatur family who you could depend on for a smile and a cheerful greeting whenever you saw her. She loved to laugh and shared her joy, quick wit and happy disposition with us all. She loved her family and was proud of all that they had accomplished, we were lucky she considered us to be family as well.

If you’re looking for a place to hear bagpipes today or craving corned beef and cabbage, check out our St. Patty’s day post where we’ve listed all the local happenings.

March 26th, 2011

8:00pm-9:00pm

Hosted by the City of Decatur and the Decatur Business Association

In celebration of Earth Hour 2011, Decatur is hosting a bonfire and marshmallow roast.  Join us on the Downtown Decatur square for roasted marshmallows to celebrate Earth Hour.  At 8:30pm, we’ll count down and turn off the bandstand lights and the blue pillar lights on the square and leave them off for 1 hour.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.  Last year, 128 countries and territories participated and global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, stood in darkness to show their support.  Check out the video below to learn more.

Let's cheer, Decatur!

The Publix Georgia Marathon is coming through the City of Decatur this Sunday morning, March 20th and we would love to have you participate! Decatur has a great history of participating in the Neighborhood Challenge and since it has started, we have won over $15,000 in prize money to go towards fitness initiatives in Decatur.

Decaturites are needed to come to the official cheering station on Ponce de Leon adjacent to the Old Courthouse Square on Sunday morning at 7:30 am to help cheer the runners on. Don your GREEN  clothes and come out with a noise maker, signage, and/or a musical instrument. Let’s make noise so the runners remember our city. Runners are going to vote for their favorite Hydration Stations and their favorite Cheering Section so we want them to remember us! Prize money will go towards the city’s new walking program, “Walk There, Decatur!”

You don’t have a noise maker? Well check out the easy green project below…All you need is a clean, empty soda can, a few pennies or dried beans, and a piece of tape-VOILA! Plenty of noise for everyone!

See you on Sunday morning! For more info, please contact me katie.abel@decaturga.com or call 678-553-6573

We might not dye our river green like some cities – mostly because we don’t really have a river in Decatur – but that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style! In fact, Decaturites don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Week!

To get the week started right, I recommend that you stop by Decatur Screen Print. They’re located on the second floor of the Garlic Thai/ New Orleans Sno Ball Cafe building at 340 W. Ponce. They have tons of green shirts printed with St. Pat’s-appropriate designs.

The shop also has some St. Patrick’s Day accessories:
