Energy Ace- reception area

Energy Ace was founded by Wayne Robertson in 2002 as a single-source, full service sustainability consulting firm. In June 2010, Energy Ace opened its headquarters in the Fidelity Bank building at 160 Clairemont Road.  Not only is the new facility beautiful, it is dual certified in both LEED Gold and Green Globes certification programs.  I’ve toured the facility, and wanted to take a few moments to share some of their accomplishments.

Energy Ace specializes in green buildings, energy conservation and environmental stewardship, and they certainly are leading by example with their new building.  Their slogan, “Green Made Simple,”  shines through in all elements of the design.  The picture above is of the reception area which features re-used glass panels, carpet tiles made from recycled materials, and bamboo wall coverings.

Quick Facts:

  • Energy Ace optimized energy performance through a 30% lighting power reduction
  • Daylighting controls are in place for 50% of the lighting load
  • Occupancy sensors are in place for 75% of the connected lighting load
  • 40% of the materials used contain post consumer and pre consumer content recycled content
  • 37% of the materials used were from within a 500 mile radius
  • 14% of the materials used were rapidly renewable
  • 54% of the wood used was Forest Stewardship Council certified

The photo to the right is Wayne’s office.  Those beautiful floor to ceiling glass panels reduce the demand for interior lighting, the bamboo floor is a rapidly renewable material, and the furniture was from a sustainable manufacturer. Click the photos below for more detail on the elements of the room.

TOMs, the shoe copy that donates a pair of shoes every time you buy a pair, is hosting One Day Without Shoes today, April 5, 2011. So take off your shoes for the day and remember that in many developing countries, children have to walk barefoot for miles to school, clean water and medical help.

Both Squash Blossom and Little Shop of Stories are celebrating One Day Without Shoes.

Bring this coupon with you between 3-6 p.m., leave your shoes at home, and get 10% off your Squash Blossom purchase. The boutique will be selling TOMs (including kids and mens sizes) plus celebrating the day with snacks, music and a bedazzler (for your TOMs, not your feet).

You can also get 10% off at Little Shop of Stories if you come in without shoes. The 11 a.m. storytime will include stories about helping others, doing good in the community and about feet.

The City of Atlanta and City of Decatur are partnering on a Home Energy Makeover Contest, designed to raise awareness about home energy performance.  We are excited about using this opportunity to promote local businesses, create demand, and increase awareness for the AtlantaSHINE and DecaturWISE city-wide home energy efficiency programs. Similar contests are happening in Charlottesville and Los Angeles.

If you are a contractor or vendor who is interested in participating, please click the link below  to register. The Contest Sponsor Planning Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 – 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Southface Energy Institute SWEET Center.  Interested participants can also join online.

Homeowners stay tuned to the Decatur Minute and the City of Decatur website for information about how to sign up for the contest.

…or at least that is what the sign says.

I’ll admit, I have been giddy with excitement about Decatur getting a Jimmy Johns. The sandwich chain originally started out on college campuses (which is where I first found them, Go Mizzou!) and ever since my freshman year, it has been love at first bite!

Their sandwiches are delicious, they are super fast, they are open late, and best of all…THEY DELIVER!

Since the word on the street was that Jimmy Johns finally opened at 3pm yesterday, I loaded up the baby and decided we were having sandwiches for dinner. The store is clean and bright, the staff is really friendly, and I was in and out in under 5 minutes.

My favorite menu items? The Country Club and the Beach Club…but you’ll have to go to decide for yourself!

This just in from Peggy Rogers, Community Outreach Director for the Publix Georgia Marathon:

Great job Decatur!

Please note: Alma Hour has been moved to City Hall and will be held at 7:00pm.

Due to rain and tornado warnings in the area, we have had to cancel Earth Hour and the Bonfire. As of now, we do not have a make-up date planned. Thank you and have a good evening

In Case of Rain

Although we are hoping for the best, it is supposed to rain off and on most of tomorrow. If it does, we will move Alma’s memorial service, “Alma Hour” to City Hall. I will try and post a message here and on Facebook if we change locations. We will also post signs at the Bandstand if we have to make the move.

Also, if it is raining, we will may have to cancel the Bonfire. Check back here for updates. Thank you and have a great weekend!
