Atlanta Light Bulbs, Inc. and the City of Decatur are partnering to host the 2nd annual light bulb exchange to Greenfest 2011.  Greenfest is being held May 7th on the Downtown Square.  The event kicks off at 3pm with live music and ends at 9:30pm.

Attendees will receive 1 compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulb in exchange for signing an agreement to discard 1 regular, incandescent bulb when they get home.  However, if attendees bring an incandescent bulb to the event, they can receive 2 CFL bulbs!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, CFL bulbs use 75% less energy and last 10 times as long.  The average CFL will save about $30 over its life, and pay for itself within 6 months.

Supplies are limited, so come early to get your free CFLs.  The light bulb exchange will last while supplies do.  The City of Decatur would like to thank Atlanta Light Bulbs, Inc. for sponsoring this exchange.  Learn more about their company at www.atlantalightbulbs.com

Please contact Lena Stevens, Resource Conservation Coordinator for the City of Decatur with any questions at lena.stevens@decaturga.com or 404-370-4102.

Habitat for Humanity DeKalb launched the inaugural Playhouse Build in February with eleven teams participating in building Playhouses to sell to the public as a source of funding for the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity.  The Playhouse Build event kicked off at a February 12th Framing Frenzy with 40 people working to frame 10 playhouses.  Since then, the Playhouses have been in the hands of each team as they work to customize and complete their unique Playhouse design.

Participants in the Playhouse Build include teams from Tucker High School Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Georgia Perimeter College, Meade’s Doors and More, Shallowford Presbyterian Church, Pepsi Beverage Company, the National Coalition of Black Women, and four individual teams. Southface and the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority have partnered to build a Green Playhouse for the event.

The completed Playhouses will be on display on the Decatur Square and at Perimeter Mall during the week of April 9th – 17th.   The public will have an opportunity to bid to purchase the playhouses beginning April 10th online at www.DeKalbHabitat.org  The public is also encouraged to “vote” on their favorite playhouse through DeKalb Habitat’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/dekalbhabitat.  Fun awards for playhouse designs will be announced at the Golden Hammer Awards Ceremony the evening of April 16th at the Holiday Inn Select in Decatur.  The Golden Hammer event is a benefit for DeKalb Habitat celebrating the accomplishments of 5 award winners for their commitment to affordable housing. More information on the event can be found at www.DeKalbHabitat.org

Agnes Scott College’s Studio Dance Theatre will always have a place in my heart because I was a part of that group when I was a student over 5 years ago. The spring dance performance always includes a great mix of modern, ballet and jazz dances and for $5 a ticket it’s the best deal in town.

Who's #1? We Are!

Thanks Creative Loafing for choosing Decatur/Oakhurst as #1 in the Creative Loafing Ultimate Neighborhood Guide.  Nevermind that we are actually a city – we like being #1!

Creative Loafing ranked 26 Atlanta neighborhoods based on affordability, transit, safety, greenspace, culture, diversity, dining, nightlife, schools, shopping, and more…according to the article in the March 31-April 6, 2011 edition.

Not only were we Creative Loafing’s Best Neighborhood Overall and for Schools – we were the Readers Pick: Best Neighborhood for Restaurants.

It doesn’t get much better than that!

Did you know that although tornadoes occur in many parts of the world, these destructive forces of nature are found most frequently in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains during the spring and summer months?

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of April so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m.   The test should last approximately one minute.

If you have questions or want more information about the siren system, check out the Siren page on the City’s website or contact Assistant City Manager Tony Parker at 404-370-4102.
