Better Comfort.

Lower Bills.

DecaturWISE launches Monday, April 25th! Improve the comfort of your home and save money by participating in City of Decatur’s energy efficiency rebate program, DecaturWISE (Worthwhile Investments Save Energy). This program adds to the benefits of Georgia Power’s Home Energy Improvement Program, and is designed to help residents make their homes, old or new, more energy efficient and comfortable through a comprehensive home performance energy analysis and the implementation of energy efficient upgrades.

Example of insufficient attic insulation

Home energy analysis is a great way to get professional advice on how your particular home, with all its unique characteristics, can be retrofitted to reduce your utility bills.  Walking through your home  with an auditor gives you a completely different perspective, and you might be surprised what you learn. Surprisingly, the most impactful improvements to reduce energy use in Decatur homes usually includes things we don’t often think about like insulation, duct sealing and air sealing.  Lena Stevens, the City’s Resource Conservation Coordinator discussed many of these issues related to her own Decatur home in a blog post entitled The Art of Home Energy Efficiency back in November 2010.

With DecaturWISE you can earn up to $3,200 for improving the energy efficiency of your home.

  1. Georgia Power offers residents up to $2,200 in rebates based on the energy savings they achieve.
  2. DecaturWISE will award up to an additional $1,000 for homes achieving a 15 percent or greater improvement in energy savings. Total DecaturWISE and Georgia Power rebates cannot exceed 50 percent of the total improvement costs.

It’s easy to participate!

  1. Find a participating contractor – visit Decaturga.com [add link to program page here] and choose one of the approved contractors, all of which can offer Georgia Power and DecaturWISE rebates.
  2. Learn more about Georgia Power’s Home Energy Improvement program on their website.
  3. Complete the home energy analysis.
  4. Contractor will install energy saving upgrades.
  5. Complete post-installation inspection.
  6. Contractor applies for rebates.
  7. You receive money back!

Walk For Lunch looks to make strides in Decatur, the most walkable city in the State of Georgia!

After a very successful season in Downtown Atlanta, Walk For Lunch is looking to make new strides in the City of Decatur, the most walkable city in the State of Georgia. Walk For Lunch – Decatur is planned for May 3 – 26th, 2011 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Registered walkers can walk between the hours of 11:30 am – 1:15 pm to the Decatur Square.

WALK FOR LUNCH (WalkForLunch.com) is an inexpensive lunch hour walking program that includes healthy lunches and benefits local children. Walkers can organize teams or sign up as an individual walker for $25 at WalkForLunch.com.

Walkers can pre-order healthy lunches from Subway Restaurant, Pita Pit and Sammiches N’ Stuff, all local Decatur restaurants. In addition to the lunches, each walker will be invited to attend a Health & Wellness Expo and be given 1 – 2 mile walking maps. Each walker will also receive a Walk For Lunch – Decatur T-shirt, daily goodies from our sponsors and an opportunity to walk with the Mayor of Decatur, Decatur Firefighters, coworkers, friends and neighbors. The walking program including the lunch pick-up will take 30 – 60 minutes.

Congratulations to Agnes Scott College  for ranking No. 1 in the state and No. 29 nationally in this year’s RecycleMania Grand Champion Division. In last year’s competition, the college was first in the state and placed No. 35 nationally.

The college also ranked No. 11 nationally in the food service organics (food composting) division, with 17 pounds of food per person composted.

RecycleMania is a national college and university recycling competition. About 600 colleges and universities signed up for the 10-week competition, which pits institutions all over the country against each other in several categories to see which school can recycle the largest portion of their waste.

See you at the Easter Egg Hunt tomorrow!

The Hunt Will Go On!

Despite speculation that tomorrow morning may be rainy, the Decatur Business Association’ s  Easter Egg Hunt on the Square will go on, rain or shine.

If it is actually raining when it is time to start the festivities, the Easter Bunny will be visiting with kids and families under the Community Bandstand. Rather than hunting, there will be goodies bags for everyone who braves the rain to join us.

If it is just a little wet tomorrow morning, the Easter Egg Hunt will go on as planned! Easter Bunny arrives at 10:30 a.m. The candy hunt begins promptly at 11 a.m. Age categories: 0-2; preschool, kindergarten, grades 1-5

And if you do manage to make it out to the Square, please take a moment to thank all of our wonderful sponsors who make this event happen! You can find out more about them on the DBA website.

4:00 p.m. – There is a water main break on Willow Lane at Superior Avenue. DeKalb County Watershed Management is on the scene working to correct the problem. No time estimate has been given for the work to be completed and for water service to be restored to the homes on Superior Avenue from N. Decatur Road to Scott Blvd and on Willow Lane from Superior Avenue to Scott Blvd. At this time, a boil water advisory has not been issued.

We’ll keep you posted so check back often for more information.

Here is a hint…he’s big, fluffy, and carrying a basket full of goodies for all of Decatur’s boys and girls!

You got it! The Easter Bunny is coming to the Old Courthouse Square this Saturday.  Bring your basket and join the Easter Bunny in the hunt for candy eggs.  Easter Bunny arrives at 10:30 a.m.  Age categories:  0-2; Preschool, Kindergarten, 1st – 5th grades.  Sponsored by Decatur Business Association and local businesses. Free. www.decaturdba.com

Wondering where to park? You can always park for FREE in the DeKalb County parking deck after 5pm and on the weekends. Also, watch for big signs posted around the Square pointing you to more parking options. Or better yet, leave a little early and walk to the Easter Egg Hunt!
