The Decatur Recreation Center is about to undergo a huge renovation and is packing up to begin the move this coming Monday, May 23rd to Beacon Hill. The “temporary” Rec Center will be located in the old Theatre Decatur space at Beacon Hill, right behind the Decatur Police Station. The new address is 430 W. Trinity Place and the entrance is on the rear of the building.

While we move our technology on Monday  morning, the phone lines will be down for about an hour. After that, all registration for camps, sports, etc. will be at the new location. If you try to call and can’t reach us, just leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we are online again.

After-school, exercise classes and other regular programming will continue at the present location until school is out on Friday, May 27th, then all summer camps and regular Rec Center activities will be at Beacon Hill.

We look forward to serving the community in our temporary location!

Did you know that Alton Brown was in Decatur on Saturday, April 30? Even more importantly, did you know the Boys and Girls Club in Oakhurst has a Good Food Garden? No? Well, here are the details:

In partnership with the Food Network, 50 Comcast Cares Day volunteers created a Good Food Garden at the Samuel Jones Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, April 30. Good Food Gardens are educational gardens offering children fun, hands-on gardening experiences to inspire healthy eating habits for life. The Decatur garden is one of 15 planted across the country as part of Comcast Cares Day 2011. Across metro Atlanta, over 2,500 volunteers participated in community service projects as part of the 10th Anniversary Comcast Cares Day.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

It’s hard to believe that the Decatur Arts Festival is only one week away because that  means the Decatur Beach Party is only three weeks away. So it’s time to start thinking about volunteering for the annual event that brings the beach to Decatur. Here are the event details:

Decatur Beach Party
Friday, June 17 • 5 p.m. to midnight
Tickets are $5.25. Purchase them here or volunteer and get in for free!
Various volunteer shifts available – set up, entry gates, children’s boardwalk games and more.

The 2010-2011 revised and the 2011-2012 proposed budget estimates are now available for review on the City’s website.  Hard copies are also available for review at the reference desk on the second floor of the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street or at Decatur City Hall in the City Clerk’s Office, 509 N. McDonough Street.

A work session and a public hearing on the budget & 2011 millage rates will be held on Monday, 6 June 2011. A second public hearing and adoption of the budget & 2011 millage rates will be held on Monday, 20 June 2011. All meetings will be held at City Hall.

PushPush Theater’s Charlie Adair sends along this description for its summer camps:

This summer is going to be a lot of fun at PushPush Theater.  Because 2011 is the anniversary of Tennessee Williams, we will be celebrating his work throughout the year.  Our summer production will focus on his later writing, and specifically, a play about ghosts, zombies, and making true friends!

Williams wrote several fun comedies and our camp shows will feature some incredible writing for both stage and film (Williams is one of the most influential writers for American cinema.)  The production is broken up into 20 individual scenes with many more main roles.  This will allow campers to find partners on their own level.  It will also provide even more film scene work for the actors.

The first camp is June 13 – July 1 and there are only 5 slots left, so please let us know as soon as possible if you are planning to attend.  This may be the first year we reach capacity.  There are more slots in the second camp, July 11 – July 29.

Ages: 8 – 12 and Teens 13+ (participating separately)

Call us at 404.377.6332, or email us at pushpushtheater@gmail.com to let us know your plans.

Sounds like fun! It almost makes me wish I was a teen again so I could attend the camp. . . almost 🙂

What was that? You didn’t know there was a National Public Works Week?! Well, there is and it’s well deserved. The City of Decatur Public Works department has some of the hardest workers I’ve ever known. Trash pick-up is only a small portion of what our Public Works employees do. Without Public Works our parks would be overgrown, City-owned buildings like the Rec Center and City Hall would be in disrepair, festivals would cease to function and the streets would be a mess. Public Works should really have a whole appreciation month!

Here’s a schedule of how we’ll be celebrating the City of Decatur Public Works this week:
Monday, May 16, 8 a.m. – Proclamation Event
Tuesday, May 17, 10 a.m. – School Poster Contest
Wednesday, May 18, 9 a.m.-noon – Guided School Tours
Thursday, May 19, 1-4 p.m. – Open House
Friday, May 20 – Employee Appreciation Day

For those of you who have never seen our Public Works facility, I highly recommend that you attend the Open House on Thursday. Click here for a map.

= an awesome Saturday evening in Decatur.

Here’s how it works:

Step One
Head to The Marlay House for its Street Food Event. Stock up on munchies from King of Pops, Westside Creamery, The Marlay Fish ‘n Chips and the Tamale Queen for the Concert on the Square.

Step Two
Walk up Ponce de Leon Ave. to the Square. Find a spot by the bandstand and settle in for the evening concert.

Step Three
Immediately after the concert, walk over to Greene’s Fine Foods for ice cream and chocolate covered potato chips – the shop is staying open late for the concert goers.

On Monday, May 16, the City Commission will consider whether to adopt a resolution calling for a referendum on November 8, 2011 on whether to allow package sales by retailers of malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits on Sunday.

During the 2011 session, the Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Bill 10 (SB10) that provides local governments with the opportunity to allow the retail sale of alcoholic beverages in original packages following approval by a majority of voters in a local enabling referendum.

If approved by the referendum, this will apply to retail outlets such as Kroger and Sherlock’s as well as to convenience stores.  What do you think?  Should there be a referendum on the matter next November?

We have posed this question on Open City Hall for comments up until 3 p.m. on Monday, May 16.  The City Commission will vote at their meeting Monday night.  Any comments posted on Open City Hall will be given to the City Commission and included as part of the minutes.

If you would like to comment via Open City Hall, click here to register or to sign in if you have already registered.

Green Mosaic just opened up next to Oh! La-La Salon in the Renaissance building this week. It carries eco-friendly clothes, baby clothes, kids toys, cleaning products and jewelry.

I wrote a longer write up and included more photos of the shop on the Decatur Tourism blog here.
