That’s right, there’s a Decatur Boating Club, and the first boating event is Saturday, July 23 from 9 am. to 1 p.m. at West Point Lake. The lake is located southwest of Decatur near LaGrange, GA and provides excellent opportunities for fishing, boating and other recreational activities.

Boating Club members will meet at the lake and then boat out to an island for some hiking. The Club will rent a pontoon. Anyone who has a boat and wishes to join in on the fun can caravan to the island.

Ticket prices are $30 for adults and $15 for children 10 and under. All proceeds will be used to cover expenses and to support the boating club. To RSVP or for more information contact Denise Cunningham at 404-918-6822 or denise03@bellsouth.net.

The City of Decatur is proud to announce that the Atlanta Decatur Home Makeover Contest launched this week! Through a partnership between the DecaturWISE and Atlanta SHINE programs, two lucky homeowners will receive free energy efficiency improvements – worth up to $10,000 – that will increase the overall comfort of their home and reduce their energy bills. Makeovers will be awarded to homeowners in each city.

DecaturWISE (Worthwhile Investments Save Energy) and Atlanta SHINE are energy efficiency programs that offer residents the ability to receive rebates for home performance improvements to their home. The programs are designed to help residents make their homes, old or new, more energy efficient and comfortable through a comprehensive home performance energy analysis and the implementation of energy efficient upgrades. You can find out more about these programs online at decaturga.com and shineatlanta.com.

Lena Stevens, Resource Conservation Coordinator for the City of Decatur stated, “It’s a great time to be thinking about the benefits of saving energy in your home. DecaturWISE and Atlanta SHINE have teamed up to bring this contest to our residents, and I can’t wait to see who wins!”  “A properly weatherized home can save homeowners an average of $437 on their annual utility bills,” said Aaron Bastian, Program Manager for Atlanta SHINE.

The Flux Projects brought FAV (Flute and Video) to the square last night – and plenty of spectators!

The visual concert was about an hour long. It was so fun to see people walk up to the square to check it out and then plop down right on the MARTA plaza and watch the rest of the performance.

Thank you to the Decatur Arts Alliance and Anne Dennington for organizing such a great event!

Did you have to abandon your blankets and chairs for some place drier during the Independence Day festivities on the Square? Thanks to the City’s clean-up crew, you can claim your belongings by stopping by the Public Works facility this week.  Public Works is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m and is located at 2635 Talley Street. Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of July so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m.   The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weatherbecome inclement  tomorrow, the test will be postponed until  Thursday, 7 July 2011.

If you have questions or want more information about the siren system, check out the Siren page on the City’s website or contact Assistant City Manager Tony Parker at 404-370-4102.

The July 4th fireworks were rained out last night.  We had hoped that last rain would clear out around 9:15 but instead the lightning came and we were forced to cancel the fireworks.

Our rain date is Saturday, September 24 immediately after the last Concert on the Square at dark.  The concert ends at 9:30 p.m. and the fireworks will go off some time between 9:15 and 9:30.  We will put out a reminder closer to the time.

Thanks for your patience and to those of you who braved the rain up until the last minute, thanks for your support!

We’re big fans of Flux Projects in Decatur (see past Decatur/Flux Projects here and here). So we’re very excited about FAV, another Flux project coming to Decatur this Thursday, July 7 on the Square at 9 p.m.

FAV stands for flute and video and is summed up as “a series of visual concerts involving the animation of Amber Boardman  and live solo flute performances by Sonic Generator’s Jessica Peek Sherwood” on the Flux Projects website. It’s a new kind of concert/public art experience that will be taking place right on the square.

City Commissioners Lead the 2010 July 4th Parade

I hope all of you are busy decorating your wagons, bikes, scooters and cars for the annual July 4th Pied Piper Parade this afternoon.  Remember the line-up begins t 5:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Decatur.  The parade begins at 6 p.m. and will be led by the City Commissioners in the Mini-Fire Truck.

Afterwards, plan to stay for the Callanwolde Concert Band’s concert beginning at 7 p.m.  They have a fabulous set of patriotic and show tunes especially for us!

Then get ready for the fireworks to go off at dark – usually between 9:15 and 9:30 depending on the weather.  We’ll let you know if we have to cancel b/c of thunderstorms but keep your fingers crossed that won’t happen.  Decatur resident Drew Stauss and his fireworks shooting team is getting ready now for the big show.  There are plenty of places around Decatur to watch the show if you do not want to come to the square.  James Brewer-Calvert and his congregation at the First Christian Church invite you to sit on their lawn (and their restrooms will be open!).

Send in your favorite shot of the fireworks or your favorite place to watch them and we’ll post them on our Facebook page.  Happy July 4th!
